Giant Bombcast - 03/10/15

Dan strikes again i see.

I haven't listened to it and i wouldn't be surprised if its no where as crazy as the thread is pushing.

Also in the Metro quick look he did say that the game has its fans and that's cool but he just not a fan.

Once again it possibly because i don't give a shit about that game anyways but the outrage was kinda hilarious.

Goodness me, I don't like MH very much either, but I wish Dan wouldn't have wasted so much time trying to be upset about the game and trying to hammer home his personal distaste with the game.

I also disagree with the Souls comparisons. Souls games are rather fast, especially the inclusion of rolling and the relatively small amount of start up frames on animations when you're properly spec'd. MH is much slower, and clunkier, in my opinion. Your positioning and timing, when choosing to start an animation, is much more purposeful (and potentially punishing) as a result.

It's why I think the Souls games are much easier, dare I say it. The difficulty has become a bit overstated, I think. MH is a much more unforgiving game, with much more to learn. There are tonnes of systems at play in a MH game during the minute-to-minute gameplay of combat itself -- I think more than any Souls game. Souls games don't teach you much either by ways of traditional tutorials, but there's not much in comparison to MH to learn in the first place. That's why, yeah, MH games are frustrating if you don't want to track down a FAQ or some YT intro guides, but the layered complexity makes it that much more satisfying if you're the type to put in those ~10 hours to learn. Another (rather unfortunate) thing about MH games is that they assume a lot of previously acquired knowledge of the user -- they've played all the other MH games is the assumption.

If MH was to build in a proper opt-in onboarding series of tutorials, it'd be much more friendly to newer players. But, with as niche as it is, I don't think that'd have a high of a ROI at this point. Then, add increased localization time and costs to something that probably benefits from being pretty light on text.

This literally made me piss myself laughing.

Thanks a lot, now I have to change my pants.

weird. the way he railed off on monhun definitely makes it sound like this is the first one he bothered putting much time into... but if you've played enough to write a review, I can't imagine 4 being that hard to pick up.
Game Informer's review scale probably means less than the IGN review scale though.

"I fucking hate it." - Dan

POW!

It was a good rant. I don't think I've heard Dan hate a game this much before lol

Glad to hear Brad will get Jason on to discuss it some more next time.

Lol at Dan saying he understands why people like Dark Souls, then his immediate solution to making Monster Hunter's combat "good" being for it to control like DMC.

There's a whole bunch of hunting games that play like DMC. All of them are also inferior to Monster Hunter. Hmm I wonder why?

A lot of Dan's arguments against the game were him being unwilling to learn the way the game plays. "No lock on".... well, did you try the camera snap feature? "No pause".... well, did you even look at the menu where says "pause"?

It was misguided. I appreciate his opinion, and maybe the game isn't super obvious to people about how it works, but the game works well imo, so to hear a game expert like Dan pose these arguments, it's extra sad.

With that said, this thread makes it seem like Dan blew a gasket over hating the game, when in reality, he was just being Dan.

I love this thread.

Why do you people want to listen to a thing that just confirms to your every whim and opinion on all topics?

It's incredible how butt-hurt some of the people in this thread get over Dan/Jeff being monosyllabic in their defence of a game/genre/movie/thing.

Don't you understand the comedy in Jeff disliking 'everything' but fucking loving the film The Substitute? How do you people handle life if you can't understand the humour in each and every one of the Bombcast's characters?

The same thing is said of Dan. The guy can't understand Monster Hunter but can give you the name of every Wrestlers 2nd cousin since 1993. It's hilarious.

Everyone loves validation and some hang on Bombcast's every word as if they are their parents. It's just more fun to watch from a distance and laugh rather than taking it personal.

I don't enjoy his "character"? Don't know what else to tell you.

I mean, I'm one of the few people who likes Armond White, and if Dan is trying to do the same thing, he's not really pulling it off.

Heck, this is a man who wrote a review that stated Transformers 4 is a better film than Snowpiercer and it's amazing to read: http://www.nationalreview.com/artic...s-transformers-4-and-snowpiercer-armond-white

I really dug Jeff's real conversation about color blindness, I hadn't realized that he had actually taken steps to try and rectify it with glasses or surgery.

Though he should probably hold off on the constant eye pain surgery, that might be a bad way to go.

The strange thing is that this email keeps coming in every few months. I know he's talked about getting those glasses before. Heck, it might have been when Vinny was still around, since Vinny is also (IIRC) color blind.

I don't understand why people say it's so hard to get into Monster Hunter. Just take it slow, pay attention and you'll be fine. It's not that hard to figure out.

I jumped in with Tri and didn't really have any problems. The only thing you might need a FAQ for is if you can't find a certain material and need to figure out where it drops.

Same, I followed directions and didn't have issues. I just hated the grinding for armor/weapons.

I respect that. The fact that you know he's playing a role is justification enough for me.

Those that actually lose sleep because he's not playing Monster Hunter in the right way are different though.

I live for the salt and confusion the Bombcasts cause when they drop their opinion on niche Japanese content. That or anime. It's fantastic. That's not what I go to Bombcast for, but people get so up in arms over divergent opinions lol. Positive or negative, there's always such a strong reaction from their fanbase.

It's almost one of my favourite things they do.

It's a knowing fuck you to a pretty decent sized portion of their fanbase which I find hilarious.

Also, if you watched the PAX panel recently those questions they didnt/answer were fucking great.

"You should hire Cara Ellison" - just no fucking reaction from anyone on the panel.

Dan's gonna shit on Persona 5 and that's when the party's really gonna start.

The thing is I don't have any feelings about Monster Hunter either way, since I'm also just starting the series with 4. I'm just really tired of this gimmick, and the fact that they turned it back on him when they were talking about MGS3 and he was at a loss for words makes me wonder if he is even aware of how he comes off across.

It's never as bad as people make it out to be. Not sure what it is exactly, but Dan is consistently effective at riling people up, it's great :lol especially on twitter when he puts something out to obviously ruffle feathers. People on there are always falling for it when I look at the replies.

I haven't got to the MGS3 bit yet (I'm an hour in from my car journey this morning).

I'm not sure he's acutely writing a script in his head as he's describing his thoughts - I think it's a process of what he actually thinks mixed with his understanding of his audience.

I mean, what's funnier or more interesting; a conversation dissecting the positives/negatives of a game or someone taking an incredibly one sided stance and not listening to reason despite the overwhelming evidence?

If one is looking for in-depth commentary on game design, The Bombcast is not really the place for them.

To be fair, he doesn't know that much about wrestling. Whenever he talks about wrestling, I cringe like most people do when he talks about food or whatever.

I guess the problem is that he doesn't make me laugh in the same way that Jeff does when he trolls Patrick with his Yoshi sucks gimmick. It just comes off as Fox News-ish rather than entertaining to me.

Even though it was brief, their Axiom Verge talk really has me hyped. Game has always looked great, sounds like it delivers.

I actually agree with you on this specific segment.

It felt too 'clean'. There was enough bombastic bullshit in the same way that Jeff (and Dan at times) would declare war on an entire genre.

Jeff liked P1, P2 AND P4 as well as P4A. Keep the faith mah buddies.

Well, no Persona has got the reaction from Jeff that 4 has. Very few games in general have. Following that up is going to be next to impossible. I can totally see him not digging 5 just because it's not 4, and that's totally cool.

Does Jeff like cats? cuz if he does he would totally love P5. :p
