Final Fantasy XV Demo Previews/Impressions Thread

There is something called "Damage Shift' Where if you press the guard button on right time of enemy's attack, you don't get hit and this consumes 0 MP. This is basically the Just-Guard Tabata talked about,

There is also something more but it's spoiler so I won't mention it.

We already saw this in one of the gameplay videos, but I can't point to it myself.

It doesn't even have to be in the Phantom Sword state, either I think.

Can I get a PM as well with all the spoilers?

yea, I think that's the special evade tech where Noctis create a blue shadow clone while evading.. we definitely saw that tech in a vid
Yes, it was in the Jump Festa trailer.

Here is a GIF that I had made of it back then.

wow that IQ !

This is he build that was running on a PC or something, right ?
No one knows. But even this build had terrible aliasing and lackluster draw distance. This was from Jump Festa trailer and the GIF is from an uncompressed HQ version of the trailer. YouTube compressions is terrible so don't judge the latest footage IQ from YouTube.

I miss the clean look of this one. The grass is green. The sky is blue. It's great! Episode Duscae looks very brown and has 'moody' vignetting. I prefer less color grading, and I think that fits the reality motif better.

Well unfortunately the Jump Festa trailer is the last time we had access to an uncompressed footage of FF XV. I guess we will find out how the game's looks have changed once it is officially released.

Nope. Probably just the build before they had to make lots of concessions to meet the demo deadline. The demo is rushed and thus, in addition to missing key gameplay elements, it's also not as visually stunning as the game proper.

It's simpler than that. The people in Japan creating the game start with "Ultima Weapon" in English. They transliterate it to "アルテマウェポン". And all we have to do is go back to the original English. "Atma" Weapon was simply Woolsey throwing up his hands when faced with the character limit in name files.

Well FF14 has both Atma weapons and Ultima Weapon.

Kudos to him for working within his limits of technology at the time, while also introducing "Atma" to the Final Fantasy lexicon. Fantastic localization work I feel.

I really want to play ARR:FFXIV and the new expansion coming out. My WoW subscription did expire recently... tempting. Also FFXV is looking fantastic so far, and Type - 0 looks pretty damn good as well. What a fantastic time to be a Final Fantasy fan.

Seeing Queen on that cover made me realize, when was the last time we saw a major FF character who wore glasses? I really can't think of any outside of the old man characters like Tellah

edit: And Ignis obviously

Auron got those shades.

Well they're not wrong.

Perhaps not, but say, ARR and XV+T0 have strikingly different atmospheres, the latter two evoking installments like 7 and 8 while the former harkens back to the high-fantasy period. So in the greater context it sounds like "Sorry for FF13 guys, won't happen again".

Jumbled sci-fi with unexplained more than isn't compelling in the slightest even if you dig through wikis long enough to convince yourself it makes sense?

Yes, I would think that's not someting they want to want to repeat.

Well some parts of other Final Fantasy games (cough FFVIII cough) also do feel like that. It's just pretty interesting how there's this deliberate attempt at regaining the image for the franchise.

The XIII games were a huge departure and the reception among fans is extremely varied compared to past entries. I don't blame Dengeki PS for using that sort of tagline because it's absolutely true.

I think FFXIIIs world most resembles VIII and I think most people would agree. But the key difference at play is being obtuse versus simple ambiguity. FFVIII has a sci-fi tinge to it, but it's concepts never go that broad. FFXIII wanted to be a story about gods and mortals, but it expected the player to know that lore from minute one. It tried to focus on intricacies while telling you to do your homework and go get the base knowledge on your own. It's just a really lazy screenplay.

I'm beating a dead horse here. They're wise to throw XIII under the bus.

I'd say the exact opposite.

FFVIII's world, in the first two discs, are grounded in reality. You have (a slightly futuristic) school, cars, trains, cities, radio towers, TV stations, heck, a character who literally is a cowboy with a sniper rifle. Outside of enemies, there were close to zero non-humans nor animals that didn't exist in real life - dogs, birds, etc.

I would say it's FFXV's world that superficially most resembles FFVIII - a Final Fantasy take on real life. Character designs that, while bombastic, could actually be at least believable when seen walking down the street without immediately screaming "cosplay".

FFXIII's world had close to nothing to do with everyday modern life.

edit:
Except Oerba.

:'(

Dengeki PlayStation cover is p nice. I like how the art style for the XV side is similar to a lot of the stuff we saw for Versus XIII.

I've seen Prompto make that face before. :P

:'(

Even Oerba was weird. We never had a proper idea of how life there worked together. All we knew was that everyone basically lived together and they had this weird robot thing to help. It's as if they knew that Oerba would be in shambles, so they didn't put that much thought into it.

FFXIII had a cool concept of the worlds but lacked the world-building to make it believable. I can easily understand how life in other FF settings would be, but not for FFXIII. How does Eden even work?

For FFXV, I can easily relate to how life for the main cast would be. I've lived in literal huge, sprawling modern cities. FFVIII is the closest thing to FFXV and imagining that world was easy as well.

Even FFX, which I actually rate lower than FFXIII, had its linearity justified by how great the world-building was in Spira.

I'm more prone to agree with Falk here. Much of XV is giving me major VIII vibes, at least design wise.

If only more people thought the same as you, good sir. If only...

Does anybody know what the general consensus among Japanese gamers is on the character designs, like, are there so many "lol, gay (k-pop) boyband" comments, too, or are they seen as not that unusual over there, anyway? Though it's mostly male hosts that look like that, so the Japanese mainstream could still perceive these metrosexual looks as "uncommon", no?

Btw, here's a nice picture to post if anybody says ignorant stuff like "lol cars in ff", "lel only grass, the world looks so boring" or "lul, this is no ff" :P

Ha that's not a bad pic.

A great composite pic. It's really sad it's necessary tho. FFXV has so many throwbacks and design similarities to past final fantasies, you'd think people would "get it". Just because it's higher fidelity, doesn't make it any different.

And yes, this will get a lot of use in response to trolls in future threads talking about how much final fantasy has "changed".

I can easily understand how life in other FF settings would be, but not for FFXIII. How does Eden even work?

As much as I actually enjoyed XIII and its world, I still don't understand how the hell the geography of Cocoon works.

Does every city have its own artificial sky and gravity? I know that at least Nautilus appears to.
How is it that you almost always have a clear and unobstructed view of sky from anywhere within Cocoon?

Nah, on a German gaming site. The comments over here on FFXV articles in general are pretty toxic in regards to the modern elements and character designs. I just cut that Fedora shaming stuff (doesn't add anything to the discussion).

Btw, for anybody interested:

Yup, my biggest gripe, too. The world design is beautiful just from an artistic standpoint, but the world building is probably the weakest in the series. It all felt so abstract and lifeless which made it hard to care for anything happening.
