Giant Bombcast - 03/10/15

Jeff has talked about how well the podcast does and I wouldn't be surprised if more people listen to the podcast than actually go to the site. So I don't mind them trying to get more people to the site. It is a business, after all. If you want Brad's impressions, watch the quick look. If that's too much of a chore for you, you must not want to know about the game too badly.

If it's "a business, after all," then why wouldn't they discuss what's probably the biggest release of the week on their channel that has the most eyes/ears? If they talked about Ori for only a couple of minutes and then said "check out the quick look for more info," then I'd be much more inclined to go watch it.

What I'm saying is that them not talking about Ori on the Bombcast was not a business decision to get more web traffic. You think Jeff sat down and said, "Hey Brad, let's make sure to not talk about this game this week. Get the listeners over to the site instead." No, that didn't happen.

Dan not liking Monster Hunter was completely obvious. It's similar to his dislike for mobas. They require investment, commitment and gratification is delayed instead of instant. They're anti-Dan games.

Dan is the kind of person who refuses to properly engage with something daunting and is happier brushing it aside and bathes in his own ignorance ad of out were a valid stance on the same level of the people who actually did engage with it.
Is this really true? I mean he likes stuff like Dark Souls, Fire Emblem, Trials, XCOM, Zelda games, etc. I don't think "delayed gratification" or investment means Dan won't like a game. And honestly, some of his complaints are why I could never get into Monster Hunter. Maybe he was a bit hasty explaining himself, but he didn't seem completely off-base.

It's okay to not like Monster Hunter. Easy brehs.

I agree, I love the souls games but find the MS series to be total shit.

Yeah Dan was on point with his Monster Hunter dislike.
Monster Hunter is awful. I'm not going to go google how to play a game in 2015

But, it's 2015 and takes two seconds to google something. It takes longer to get your phone out.

I'd argue you'd learn faster googling than with a tutorial.

In a lot of ways, it's true.

Jeff sure loves saying "in a lot of ways", or "in some ways".

And "Conceptually". Or how about when Patrick said "profoundly" a few times in the GOTY discussion and everyone subconsciously started saying it all of a sudden.

I think the issue stems from the "It's a shitty game" bit. Sure you intend to say "I dislike the game" but wording it as a shitty game is going to cause a reaction like this. If you don't like the game say you don't like the game or some other equivalent but saying it's a shitty game is not equivalent to not liking it.

This is exactly right. There are plenty of issues with MH, and I don't think anyone, even those who really like the game, would deny that.

But Dan made a blanket, baiting statement. Maybe he feels strongly about it, but his statement doesn't leave room for disagreement or debate. Jeff saying that it was "implied" that he was saying "in his opinion" it wasn't a good game isn't exactly accurate. Of course it should be understood as one person's opinion, but I find it hard to believe Dan didn't willfully and intentionally say what he said in the least eloquent way possible. He wanted to convey, "You're wrong if you think it's a good game. It's not that I don't get it; it's shitty." Now, I doubt there was any malice in it, but of course people are going to rebuff that kind of statement.

Eh, he said on the cast he has no problem with other people liking it, it's just how he feels about the game. And he definitely was being sort of aggressive to ruffle some feathers, but that's part of the fun imo. Jeff does this all the time about things he doesn't like.

They do it about things I myself love (Red Dead, Yakuza, etc.) but it's just never bothered me. I always assume they're playing around a bit.

True. It's important to recognize that as much as people like these guys, that doesn't mean their opinions all have to coincide with our own. I think Jeff is great for instance, would love to just chat with him, but generally speaking, I do not put a lot of stock in his reviews because I know we don't share the same opinions on a lot of genres.

That's good, because you really don't need. Don't need to for the Souls games, either.

It does require you to actually pay attention to the game, though.

How does a podcast where Jeff craps on games regularly cause so much angst when another person does the same thing?

Is it just because we know Jeff, but F the new guy?

GB is the wrong podcast to listen to if you are going to have issues with people strongly having opinions one way or the other about games you may like.

Honestly, I'm shocked that the general reaction is "how dare they speak so crudely about a game I like" and not "holy cow, Giant Bomb has spent two (and likely three+) weeks actually giving a serious amount of air time to discussing a Monster Hunter game."

Also, if you watched the PAX panel recently those questions they didnt/answer were fucking great.

"You should hire Cara Ellison" - just no fucking reaction from anyone on the panel.
Thankfully, that was the one of the only two weird things said in that Q&A along with "How do I not look like a dumbass?". Comments here and on Giant Bomb made it out to be that the Q&A was again so cringe-worthy but the rest were good-great questions.

Dan's reluctance kind of represents the negative image of the game's appeal, so in a way he's accurately describing the game. Sinking their teeth into a game that tastes like rock, letting themselves in for its idiosyncrasies, understanding its systems and how they relate, researching the optimal approach, eventually teaching what they've learned, -- there's definitely people who will find satisfaction therein. It's a bit of an intellectual fetish and mostly takes place outside of the game, I guess.
