Bloodborne Press Preview Impressions (16/03/2015)

There's always a first time. PS2 gen games that sold like hot cakes were far less mass market material than the modern ones are. I mean really, MGS2 is pedantic as hell compared to modern games. Yet it sold 7 million.

I have actually yet to hear of a gamer who has not at the very least heard of DS. Though that fame came long after it's PS3 release.

Demon's Souls players were like lepers when it first came out. Seriously rarer than unicorns.

I wouldn't go that far, I mean I have overheard in my local gamestop back in the day that Demon's Souls was like getting kicked in the balls repeatedly. This was one customer speaking to another about possibly purchasing the game.

What bothers me most about this... How does one even know what it is like to be repeatedly kicked in the balls. What does one have to do to be continually kicked in the balls instead of just once?

I don't understand. The person is obviously using the phrase as a metaphor, not in the literal sense. You don't have to get hit by a train to know that it hurts.

They're still generally low-key in the broader mindshare of the market. I'd be willing to bet if you asked any random shopper at Gamestop if they know Demon's Souls, most wouldn't have heard about it.

Quizzing random shoppers is a great way to make any video game without "Mario" in the title sound niche.

I didnt get dark souls 2... But i will get this, especially after reading about the fundamental changes to the pacing.

Alright, lets put it this way... The game is not forgiving, We can all agree with that.

How is an unforgiving game even on the same level as being hit by a train, kicked in the balls repeatedly or any other drastic form of repeated pain?

Metaphor yes, but come on... extreme metaphors are not needed for a game like this.

I would argue that GAF has just as serious--if not more--problem with people concern trolling threads where members express excitement about an exclusive game. In this environment, when another member makes a "concern" comment not rooted in fact, people are naturally going to react suspiciously.

They're both bad, but one doesn't justify the other. I'm of the mind that people should just PM a mod when they see concern trolling, rather than contributing to self-perpetuating defensive behavior whenever something threatens their "hype."

I wonder if firearms substituting as the new parry means parries are intrinsically easier. Shooting firearms certainly looks faster than the riposte.

"Sony why aren't you advertising your amazing game" has to be the most generous "concern trolling" of all time.

Well, since I apparently have to prove I'm not a troll (which, seriously, come the fuck on), here are my two Bloodborne preorders. I'm that hyped for the game.

My point, and if I erred I apologize, was that I always got the feeling Sony was hesitant about a Souls-successor selling enough to justify its development cost. I also got that feeling from Nintendo and Bayonetta for different reasons or Microsoft and Sunset Overdrive for different reasons. It was never about volume, I fully recognize they are advertising it, but it always felt to me like they were more confused about how to do it than trying to mislead people.

Since I'm wrong, I apologize. To who, I'm not really sure, but I apologize nonetheless. I definitely don't appreciate the bullshit about me being a troll.

I'll now bow out of discussion of this game on GAF, because it kind of fucking sucks to have people cast aspersions on you because you interpreted something differently and perhaps incorrectly, and I don't see that getting fixed because I've proved I spent enough money on it prior to this conversation.

What is happening in this thread? Lets keep calm. This is Project Beast one of Neogaf's most beloved leaks. Back on track, I'm glad early impressions are somewhat 'neutral'. I want to know more about the game but at the same time I don't want to get spoiled by reading reviews of any kind nor detailed impressions.

I think that's a pretty big exaggeration. In any case, I think in the general arena of the games industry, Miyazaki's games (while being quality experiences for their intended audiences), don't generate broad appeal, and in that are considered "niche".

I literally can't believe shit has devolved into the point where prominent posters have to leave cuz of crap like this. Are you fucking serious? You don't have to apologize for shit.

I went back and checked quickly. I see one poster calling him out as "bs" and the others correcting him. Is correcting people now some wrong that you can't do on a message board?

I think he's being overly dramatic that he got called out for being wrong.

Tried preordering it through PSN.
Tried changing my credit card info and it kept saying that I needed to enter a valid card (no shit, and it was).
Ended up buying the PSN card codes through Amazon and added the money to my wallet. Go to preoder it and constantly get the same error code when hitting the purchase tab.

Demon's Souls already trained me for going light and fast, while using my roll. That is the strategy I especially had to use in order to beat King Allant. However, when Dark Souls came around, I fell into sword and boarding and going tank mode on occasion, but still found that rolling was more effective than sitting there blocking on most occasions. With that, I am already programmed to play that way, so I am not expecting it to be too much of an adjustment.

Yep even using a sword and board in Demon's Souls you had to dodge a shitton. The tower knight had me running all over the place. I never played much of Dark Souls 1/2 so I don't know about those.

You know, mulling it over, by far my biggest concern for the reviewing process is that without a large number of other players online, the game will lose a chunk of its charm.

I'm sure the reviewers are well aware of this. Many are Souls vets and understand the importance of the playerbase for multiplayer.

Some even do split reviews or at least an initial impression with a Single Player focus on release day and a multiplayer follow up a few days later.

Was it just recently? PSN is undergoing maintenance so that might have something to do with it. (just a guess though)

As a GameStop employee, when people ask about good role-playing games, I have more people unaware of what Dragon Age is than ANY of the Souls games. I think people are genuinely unaware of the reach, if not the popularity, of Miyazaki's work.

Could just be my area, though.

I don't know if you're trying to order it from a different region than where your card is registered, but that doesn't work.

Using PSN cards to fill your wallet should work though. What error are you getting? Maybe it's temporary.

I think it's pretty well understood that the Souls games are "niche". They have a dedicated player base but the appeal of the games has never been broad.

I'm not one to use reviews to make a purchase decision but especially in this case, I already know I will like this game and couldn't give a rat's behind about embargos. From the 30 minute stream I watched yesterday this game is everything I could have possibly hoped for. The setting, the gameplay, the creatures, the weapons, the pacing, the lore....

Not to be hyperbolic but this is most likely going to be the best game I have played in a long, long while. Tuesday cannot come soon enough.

I am on the same page as you my friend. Everything about this game screams best game in years.

The fact that you can run out of bullets makes it harder to spam as a parry but it does come with a slight jump back to protect you

Basically. I think the franchise is relatively well known, but a lot of the time when people call it "niche" they're talking about it's appeal. The same way everyone knows what Street Fighter is, but it's actual audience is relatively niche.

Did you expect this game to be easy...?

Perhaps it is an area thing. As much as I love Souls games, I was always under the impression that, although they tended to sell well, the numbers didn't really compare with most of the AAA blockbuster franchises, like Assassin's Creed or Dragon Age. That works for me, though, since it means the game is designed for fans of the genre instead of being designed by committee.

I turtled (with my trusty poise-breaking zwei) and magicked my way through DkS and DeS. Umbasa help me through these bloody, trying times.

That is seriously too adorable. I'd totally buy it if they were to put it up for sale. I have two killzone themed sackboy figurines that came free with my purchase of LBP2. Would love to have the hunter join my lil collection.

Most likely, although I checked the online status as well as the codes. Random searches with that error brought up "PSN getting hammered". I thought they had maintenance later on in the day on Mondays, but it's been ages since I've used the store. I'll just try later tonight or tomorrow. Just want to preinstall it when that becomes available.

The funds were added to my wallet. It's simply sitting with the action loading graphic for about 30s and then I get an error.

E-82000002 which doesn't even show up on their error code list.

I think pre-install is Sunday. I also went via Amazon codes to pre- order it and all I see is a countdown timer until the release of the game.

GAF has a serious problem with people getting defensive about games they're excited for. Honestly, circling the wagons in OTs and hype train threads is one of the worst things that goes on here and it deserves to be called out whenever it happens.

You're right. But another issue of this forum is that certain long time posters love to be the center of attention by being drama queens. Post something they know will get some kind of disagreement to set things up and then start whining/preaching/etc after said disagreement. Even if the disagreement isn't as violent as they wanted it to be.

Pre-install is on Sunday. This is madness, outside of Destiny this is the only game I have purchased digitally and hardcopies of.

Bloodborne will sell worse than games like The Order, witch didn't make specially well on NPD.

I would have said the same but I'm starting to think Bloodborne will beat Order now. The WoM and the reviews will certainly help but Order sales aren't the highest to begin with. BB is niche, but I don't think it's so niche to not be able to pull off 300k in the first month.

Hehe saying something that you know will evoke responses from people and complaining about afterwards. I guess that explains some stuff I've seen.

Embargoshmargos.

Sure, a super-early embargo is a very clear sign of confidence from the publisher (Dragon Age, Mario Kart, TLoU), but just because a game somehow doesn't have a 2-3+ day embargo suddenly means "omg, something to hide!"

Super Smash Bros for WiiU/3DS's embargo was later compared to Mario Kart's. Did that somehow 'imply' anything? LBP3's embargo was later than The Order's, yet review scores favoured LBP3 over The Order.

The only real takeaway that's constant is that a super-early embargo = very high confidence. However, just because a game doesn't have that kind of embargo doesn't mean a lack of confidence either.

I wouldnt say its concerning but after playing DS2 @60 this whole time, its gonna take some adjustment to go back to 30.

I switch a lot between Dark Souls 2 (PC) and Destiny (PS4). I know it's not the same game but you can definitely tell the difference in FPS when switching but you adjust fairly quickly. However, when you're engrossed into a game as much as a Souls game, you never sit and think about FPS too often.

Eh, You don't have to eat pieces of feces while getting rammed with a flaming cactus to know it's probably a horrible experience.

On topic, I hope Bestbuy some how, some way ship out my game early to me. I'm loving some of these previews.

And the possibility of people who aren't into Souls reviewing this game wouldn't really be new. That used to get me when the sports or fighting game guy at a magazine would review a rpg for example, say they don't get the appeal, and give it a lower score. But now it's like whatever. If I don't like this game, I trade it back straight away and it'll become like a rental.

Like I said in my other post, just PM a mod if you see something like that going on. Don't start or escalate shit because it's not your job.
