Mario Party 10 |OT| - "We're just having four much fun!"

Still on the fence...never owned a Mario Party game nor really played any. Feel most people are condemning it based on previous games which doesn't fit my situation.

Had a blast with Mario Party 9 with friends and still some fun by myself. Heck, Mario Party 10 is the first in the series I even preorder and digitally to boot.

If in doubt, either wait for a deal or a coupon or something.

Does this require wii motion plus? Otherwise I might pass.
It seems it doesn't. Just 4 regular Wii Remotes seem to be enough. Guess it's maybe why there's no controller bundle as they didn't wanted customers to think it's Motion Plus only. Who knows.

Mario Party 2 is available on the Wii Virtual Console service, so if you have some Wii Classic Pro Controllers, you can give that a go and see if it's your jam. Alternatively, Mario Party 9 is pretty cheep nowadays, so if you want to try the car mechanic (along with my personal favourite collection of minigames), you can go there for your party game fix.

I'm fully aware I could go out and buy the old Mario Party games but that wasn't my concern.

The point is, is that if you are unsure, there are two different ways for you to give both styles of play a shot.

Wow, Boo isn't playable?? I was going to ignore the bad reviews until this.

I'm still waiting for Waddlewing to get some respect from Nintendo. He's practically carrying the entire Mario franchise. ;)

But, yes. It's baffling that in most of the Mario Spin-off games from the past two generations, for every great addition (The Koopalings in MK8, Kamek in MP9), there have been weird roster subtractions and additions. I mean, WHY IS BABY ROSALINA A THING?!

I'm sorry to bump this thread, but when playing several rounds of Amiibo Party tonight, my friend's girlfriend (who was playing Bowser) had discovered something interesting. Whomever is playing as Bowser, after several rounds, a Bowser Jr. figurine will give the Bowser player a token, and then it will activate a Bowser Party minigame. In addition, there will also be a Bowser Space-like activation, where like in Mario Party 2, a random event from a number of events will then unfold.

No need to be sorry, it is the official thread. :p

Cool news. Have a Smash Bowser Amiibo, so will check that in a few days.

Just watched four people play Bowser Party and it seemed pretty balanced with movement unlike reviews are saying...and everyone looked to be having fun. Hmmmm

Awww, Spike's so adorable in this game.

Really great character choice despite all the omissions. Hope he becomes a regular now in the spin-offs.

I assume you don't need four amiibos to play multiplayer in amiibo Party... right? That would be criminal. I'll most likely have an opportunity to play the game this weekend, so please look forward to my impressions.

It was pretty weird on our end. 70% of the games we had were pretty even, but then you have the occasional round where one side is dominating the other. The Bowser player in our group had annihilated us in the first round (due to a combination of poor dice rolls & how precise he was in the pinball mini-game). Contrast that to another round where we were able to keep our distance and how Nabbit was able to steal the Bowser player's dice blocks.

As mentioned on the first page, you will only need one Mario-themed Amiibo (regardless if it's from the Smash line or the Super Mario Bros. line) to "activate" the Amiibo Party Mode. For the other players, they will get a cardboard cutout piece of their selected character.

I feel the same, at least with regards to the Kooaling's & Link's inclusion in Mario Kart 8. They are all great additions, but then you had more questionable characters that had sneaked in from the back door.

On a random note, I find this to be pretty adorable.

Even NoE know how crap it is that there's no traditional Mario Party play and are trying to sell you amiibo with that in mind.

Teasing the fact that they're locking true Mario Party gameplay behind a toy by offering a shitty square map.

Shameful.

Yeah, I agree it sucks that this is happening, but it seemed inevitable that this would be the eventual outcome.

I love how they write "individually" as if to tell you they know how much you hate riding in that damn kart with everyone.
I would like to think that the person who was hired to write these Twitter posts was gritting his/her teeth.

Where are you seeing 9 for cheap? Europe or something? Whenever I've checked, 9 (and even the apparently worst in the series level 8) haven't dropped below like $40 at best.

Good to know!

I'm thinking that I'll open my Donkey Kong Amiibo for this, then. I'll save Yoshi in case he's compatible with Woolly World in some unique way.

Look at that great board you can move around on. :|
It's more like a traditional board game.

Not great but it's not like this is unprecedented in board games. Monopoly is just a square and is still a great game, even though Fortune Street exists with a higher variety in boards and more involving gameplay.

You know what would be really cool? If Nintendo supported MP10 with DLC just like they're doing with Mario Kart 8 and like they did with Mario Golf. Additional boards. Why not? Start with the current Amiibo Party board to get people used to the mechanics of it, then release more complex boards in the future.

Someone should really ask Nintendo about this...Could be MP10's saving grace.

There's pretty much no difference between that board and moving all in the same cart since you've got no options whatsoever to decide where to go. You're just moving in a circle (or square, rather).

Most strategy seems changing up the board, which makes it slightly better than Mario Party option.

Expecting MP10 to be the lowest rated MP game to date.

  1. Lackluster board
  2. Cart mode we didn't ask for is back
  3. Amiibo mode *shrug*
  4. Boring Bowser Mode

I asked to have the vehicle back. I also asked for a separate mode mimicking classic gameplay. They sort of delivered on the latter. I'm pleased.

Boring Bowser Mode? What?
Asymmetrical gameplay is where this game will shine brightest. Baffling comment there... Have you played it yet?

Mom & Pop stores, pawn shops, privately owned video game speciality stores, .... Basically anything that isn't a major retail chain. I was able to get copies of Punch-Out!! Wii & Kirby's Epic Yarn (both sealed) for $15 each at a pawn shop near Lonsdale Quay.

Mario Party Advance still holds that record. This is the lower end though.
In terms of the main series, I think MP8 holds the trophy.
It still weird how the main title & menu screens are presented in widescreen, but as soon as you go into a game, it switches to a 4:3 screen aspect ratio.

I think MP8's problem is that it is pretty much MP7 but with some meh motion based mini-games.
MP9 I found alright since it shook up the formula.
MP10 the reviews are in the 80's to the 60's, so it seems you can still have fun with it.
I am keeping my pre-order because it is mixed.

My Mario Party 10 w/ Mario Amiibo packed-in order from Best Buy just came right now. Talk about quick. I'm starting to like ordering online from Best Buy.

So I'm going to a buddy's place tomorrow and planning on bringing my Amiibos in case we want to play the Amiibo mode. Is it worth it? I'm pretty sure he'll never buy an amiibo ever. Does it permanently unlock the boards?

Playing by myself in the meantime. Digital preorder went smooth. 2.3GB last week, then a few MBs at midnight.

Game looks really pretty, some of the music has that Mario Galaxy feel too.

Really streamlined, which I like when playing alone and my friends will appreciate. You start the game and are thrown into the main options. No title screen or intro of any kind. Minigames just show a quick clip on how to play and that's it, a welcome addition since my friends didn't liked reading instructions. :p

Had enough coins and unlocked the two hidden characters right after finishing the first game/mode/board (Mario Party) and a few carts.

You can allow it to see Miiverse posts during loading screens (default is off).

Going to try the other modes by myself. Overall, is what I expected and wanted. Can't wait to friends around. Everything moves and is quite fast, so will make for more and longer Mario Party sessions.

Some things that are inferior compared to MP9:

1) Captain can't choose mini-games
2) No captain events

Really takes away from the strategy of the game.

3) Pretty sure bosses are based on map
4) 1 - 10 Dice Block is missing (?)
5) Mini-game modes are disappointing
6) Mini-games themselves are.... :|

Wow. That's pretty disappointing. Why would they be stripping away things? It seems they haven't added anything new to the table compared to any of the last iterations save for Bowser mode.

I played Bowser mode tonight with some friends and I wasn't really feeling it at all. I enjoy the concept but the execution is poor.

The minigames aren't that great? Dang it. I didn't really care for most of the minigames in 9 so hoping this one would be better. I'm glad captain events are gone though, wasted too much time and weren't fun.

I played two party boards (the first and the Bowser-themed one) and ended up coming 3rd and 4th near the end.

First board I had 60+ stars but landed on a Bowser Jr. spot like 5 spaces before the final boss mini-game when the roulette happened to stop at "Lose half your mini-stars." So yeah... that still happens.

On the Bowser's Castle board, the whole end section is fucking terrible. There's like 20 spaces to traverse and it's like:

[safe] [safe] [safe] [safe] [danger] [danger] [+10 stars] [safe] [safe] [reverse] [danger] [danger] [danger] [danger] [+10 stars] [safe] [safe] [reverse] [danger] [danger] [danger] [danger] [danger] [danger] [end of board]

Guess what happens after every turn if you land in a danger area? Bowser spits out a fireball and you lose half your stars. Fucking bullshit. It's designed so that all the players are punished... that is unless you're a fucking bitch ass prostitution whore slut hammock CPU who keeps managing to get special dice blocks and land on reverse spaces to screw me on the next turn. I was against 2 CPU's. They each got 20 stars because they kept passing back and forth and they ended up with 40/50 stars. Me? Before this section, I had 70+ stars. And after? I fucking lost half my stars 3 times. I had 17 stars left. Thank god there was a battle mini-game I won, I crossed some stars, and then the boss game which I won too bringing my total to 52 stars. But these fucking CPU's lost NOTHING.

I knew it was going to be close between me and one of the CPU's. It was going to be decided by Bonus Stars. But wait! There's 5 Bonus Star categories (like most mini-games won, most stars lost, etc.) and this time they only reward 2 random categories! Which were chosen? Fucking most spaces traveled and most dice blocks used which rewarded the two CPU's. I came in fucking 3rd.

Game Pro's and Con's:
+ Captain Events sort of live on in blue "!" spaces. You just have to land there though. It varies board-to-board but in the amusement park one, there's two separate "!" events where all the players ride a roller coaster or a swinging boat ride and jump for stars.
+ Toadette and Spike can be purchased if you just play Party Mode twice.
+ Menus lifeless but streamlined.
+ Mini-game instructions overly simplified with video and only one sentence. Doesn't even tell you that d-pad is for movement.
+ Turns move even faster. Game doesn't even need to show you if CPU is making a different dice selection. They just roll it.
+ Boss mini-games seem to take much, much longer.
+ Mini-games have been enjoyable so far.
+ Graphics are especially nice in settings that take place in Bowser's Castle. It looks like Super Mario 3D World.

- Graphics everywhere else look subpar.
- Amiibo paywall.
- No Birdo. Heck, still less characters than MP8.
- There's two player-vs-Bowser Jr. mini-games tucked under extra modes. Yes, it's clear from this number that there was meant to be more Bowser Jr. games I assume.
- Fucking bitch ass prostitution whore slut hammock of that Bowser's Castle board was one of the worst gaming experiences ever. ND Cube expects kids to be okay with being demoralized and keep losing half your stars every turn? Shit, I almost cried if not for the fact that I found it also amusing that I just lost over 50 stars in 4 turns.

TL;DR: Nd Cube developed Wii Party U. That game at least included a Wii Remote Plus valued at $40 and made some good use of the Gamepad. Meanwhile, MP10 costs $50, requires an extra Amiibo purchase to experience a mode, only has around 10 mini-games that make use of the Gamepad (with little to do expect pressing the ZL and ZR triggers), less boards, less characters, and is demoralizing to human beings (see bolded above). If you enjoy the car aspect like I do, only play this with friends. And even then...find this game on the cheap.

Because you shouldn't stand to pay $50 for a game valued at $30 max. I feel so dirty paying such a high price for this game. Just go buy and support eShop indie titles, wait for a deal on this, or smoke some crack. The party's not worth the admission fee.

This sounds hilarious with friends, having a few people over tonight and looking forward to making my buddies lose all their stars. I got the game for 50 bucks with the Mario Amiibo though, 40USD seems like it'll be the right price for this.

How fun would this be with only two people playing? Is the CPU cheap/infuriating? I remember my last Mario Party experience being frustrating, though I don't remember which game it was.

Top Bottom
