If you've noticed Part 3 is much improved over Part 2 in this respect where only Joseph was allowed to win and this improves as the series progresses
The supporting cast in Part 2 felt more significant to me than Part 3's Joseph. Stroheim, Caesar and Lisa Lisa all had moments that didn't make them look like jobbers.
That's fine if it was a standard for 80's shounen manga, but that doesn't make the excuse inherently correct.

Joseph is the only one who won any decisive fights in Part 2.
Lisa Lisa is supposed to be the strongest Ripple user in the world and his mentor but she didn't do anything.

I was about to mention this. Joseph defeated literally every single enemy in Part 2. Caesar had his moment to shine against Wham but he fucked up hard and it cost him his life. Lisa Lisa never becomes more than a mentor.

That's true. I'm mostly talking about perception than results here, since Joseph has been practically comic relief this whole time, while Lisa Lisa seemed like a big deal, until the end of Part 2. I don't recall too much but if we're only talking about end results, couldn't the same be said about Part 1's Zepelli?
I might be remembering it too optimistically here, or I might be speaking of something different. I'm mainly thinking about the Part 2 Joseph > Part 3 Joseph transition, while those other characters could stand alone without their previous history painting what I would expect from them in similar circumstances. Like, Speedwagon would stand around being useless, but that's what I expected from him going from Part 1.
A new stand appears every set of chapters and there is an encounter between the them and the protagonists. It's still exactly the same base structure.

I think we can all agree that Part 3 does a better job than Part 2 at letting someone other than the protagonist get to be awesome but that doesn't at all change the fact that characters like Joesph and Avdol (and Kakoyin to a lesser extent) are underutilized. Or that Part II Joesph > Jotaro either

Yeah it's better than before but it's still the Jotaro and Polnareff show with guest appearances by the rest of the crusaders :v

Avdol should be dead since a long time ago and Joseph is acting like a guide / mentor and has already shined in a previous part (his stand is made for that) so I understand Araki's decision to not let them fight too much.
But the lack of Kakyoin especially since the second part is disappointing. His stand is the less vanilla one

You part 2 fans do say some really silly things. lol. Part 3 cast is fine, when reading the manga I thought they were boring as fuck but by then I was already over exposed due to the Capcom game I played years earlier. All these complaints about characters being used poorly will fade for the most part past part 3 but never disappear.

Avdol has become really dumbed down lately though and hasn't really done anything by himself for a long time (what was that scene with the plug in Mariah's battle?), and Kakyoin has been basically written out (and most of his Stands' special abilities have been ignored for a while too).
Back in part 2, the supporting cast wasn't portrayed a dumb, but they did basically win no battles at all.

I will always say that Yu Yu Hakusho has one of the best supporting casts in shounen manga. Sure they never beat the big bad of the season, but they were pretty fucking useful for the weaker enemies.

Only the DVD sales will answer this and it's most likely an obvious yes. Gonna be salty as fuck if they change the ASB part 4 voice cast though, I don't even like part 4 that much but they're PERFECT.

Chances are high, I don't see why they wouldn't especially since Part 5 is super popular in Japan. We'll have to see if this ends on a tease for Part 4 and a "To Be Continued..."

It's about 20 chapters longer. That'd make it around 6-7 episodes longer.

will watch it tonight but how's the verdict? Did David surpass the OVA's version?
They did not, they went full Budget control on many scenes, many repeated animations, static backgrounds, straight up sketches at one point.
OVA was far superior, music was very annoying and completely ruined any tension, and the fake out moments from SP were horribly done apart from the cigarette lighting.
And the next fight will be a two parter. Damn it all to hell, I want to see the gatekeeper.

Huge improvement over last week. The writer seemed to instantly realize his mistakes and fix it mid battle which was wonderful. Loved how confident Jotaru became when he realized he had his friends by his sides, even willing to put Kakyoin (he even wrote friend even), soul on the line. Unforgettable episode even if the dumb smoking censor was there (why not just have him not smoke?!)
D'arbys R part was the second best part, rewatched it at least five times.
