Pillars of Eternity Beta - Torment: Tides of the Beetles

I have one of the press accounts. Not really sure how much I'm allowed to say at this point.

The game is really good so far. Feels like Baldur's Gate 3. Lore seems crazy deep.

It is crashing to desktop on probably ~30% of all scene transitions (map loads) for me, though. Save often!

Hope the engine optimizing they are working on will mitigate this somewhat by release.

I always do. Anyway I hope that bug is fixed in a day 1 patch or something because CtD bugs annoy me the worst.

Uh-oh.
Fingers crossed for day 1 patch.

Sounds great! Hopefully the Day 1 patch addresses some of these issues, but even with crashes (especially with crashes?), it sounds like a classic Obsidian game! :D

I will not lie: As a backer, It moderately annoys me that there are people playing the finished game before me because they're more useful marketing tools. I'm not sure that's 100% okay. Just had to get that out there.

This is in response to journos getting the game yesterday, and youtubers being able to post content early next week from their playthroughs. Does anyone else share my feelings? Completely silly/don't care?
I can understand where you're coming from... but I don't feel the same way. Early release wasn't one of the Kickstarter rewards. Plus, I backed the game because I want it to succeed... Marketing the game is part of that.

But yeah... I do wish I was playing it right now...

1 WEEK TO GO!

:D

Yo man, I am not on the PE team, but next time the game crashes, can you please quit the game straight away and upload your output_log.txt from the F:\Steam\steamapps\common\Pillars of Eternity - Public Beta\PillarsOfEternity_Data folder and give it to me - I'll pass it on to the Obsidian QA team.

They might be able to hotfix it for you.

Also what platform / System RAM ?

I preordered the game finally. I wanna start with a rogue, I'm reading the gamepedia page about character creation but I'm not sure about what stats use. I think Might and Dexterity are good, I don't know about the others. Maybe perception?

Sensuki, will there be changes to systems/mechanics between the most recent beta versions and release? Are they known?

I kinda wanna jot down a potential Rogue build, but I don't know if I'm working from bad information on the wiki.

The wiki has a lot of out of date information but I don't think Rogues will be changing very much from now until release. I think most of the Rogue stuff is the same, they mostly just suffered from several buggy abilities.

Other than the crashing, it sounds good! BG3!! Woot!

Depends on the type of rogue you want to play.

Intellect can be realy important for keeping some of the active abilities the rogue has to keep those status effects they apply going so you can get sneak attack bonuses and keep enemies at a disadvantage.

Personally I'm going for a high dps dual wielder that doesn't really use active abilities. So I'm focusing on Might, Dex and Perception. Thinking right now with going:

M17, C9, D18, P16, I6, R12

I'm sure there's probably a tank-ish build out there too where Con and Res are super important too. Really depends on the type of rogue you want.

Well I guess we have the same idea! I usually like playing high-dps / high-crit chance rogues

oh my.

Just a week for the rest of us. Can't wait.

Good thing we only make one char , because I know nothing about the game rules and stats, and I'm the kind of person to spend 2 hours of making my party in Icewind Dale

It's so exciting to discover the game without any prior knowledge exactly like I played BG 1/2

Thanks for the info, I was searching all around of when my Slacker Backer key would arrive (because on the Product Page it just mentioned 'Pending').

Yeah I'm going Hearth Orlan for greater crit chance as well, they seems like they'll be fun RP wise due to their general looked down upon status in much of the world, but they also have a very nice racial feat that increases the chances of a hit going crit if your target is also being attacked by another party member.

Can anyone tell me if the combat in this game any good?

I've heard that some are complaining about it.

Is it at least better feeling than BG2?

I have pretty much been in a blackout so far on the game, now just went on the gamepediawiki to look at classes / races and mechanics, stuff like that. Now debating a little internally what PC to make.

Druid stag form is really cool looking and sounds decently powerful too. This class has bad deflection and accuracy bothers me a little though. I like mostly offensive nature of the spells and the spell list looks decent overall.

Rogue is another strong contender and probably the one i will most likely to make. Heard there is no rogue companion, so thats a big plus for making the PC one. High single target damage is pretty baller too. Also read in this thread that traps are super strong in the game so mechanics seems like a vital skill. Stealth is always really awesome for scouting and such. Positioning skills look interesting too!

Thirdly im considering Barbarian, Fighter or Paladin.

DECISIONS DECISIONS!

DECISIONS DECISIONS!

There are two other classes besides Rogues that there is no companion for.
Barbarian and Monk.
Really though any class is viable because you can build them in such different ways. I've seen a lot of vids of people with two Paladins or Fighters or Chanters and spec'ing them to be wildly different or complimentary and doing quite well.

Beta was a few areas of side content, they released a new patch every ~ 3-4 weeks and iterated on systems and content.

There are 170 maps in total in the game, 30 something of those are exteriors. So yeah kinda in between BG1 and BG2 in that sense. 13 Wilderness areas total.

Wow that do sounds quite huge ! Thanks, I need that game in my veins so bad right now :((

So are wizards OP like they typically were in BG2 or are they are a little more down to earth? Any classes worth avoiding?

They can smack you in the face their big book of spells, you tell me.

Honestly though, I have no idea. From looking at the spell list it's quite diverse. Some direct attack spells, lots of AoE dmg, status effects and debuffs. I think I've read some beta people commenting that they aren't that strong, not under powered, but not the OP class people are often used to. I've never much liked magic types outside of DA. They just never do much for me.

I've heard some people rip on Rangers, but then some other's saying they are great, so I'm not sure any class is really looked down upon right now as something to avoid outside of extreme Min/Maxing. Seems like everything is pretty viable and worthwhile if you're interested in it.

As of the latest build of the backer beta, I'd say the combat is very good. That said, the combat is different than in BG2, so whether you like it more than BG2 or not is going to depend on whether you think those differences are good things or bad things. For my part I always tolerated the combat in the IE games more than I enjoyed it, and I think most of the changes in PoE are for the better. People who really enjoyed combat in the IE games and played them at a high level may have different opinions.

Well I've always enjoyed more fast paced/impactful combat, I think I'm in the same boat as you, in that I merely tolerated the combat in those games, didn't really enjoy it.

Well I've always enjoyed more fast paced/impactful combat.

It's certainly faster than an IE game. Swings and attacks occur more often. I remember starting BG1 recently and waiting seconds between attacks. It's nothing that can't be slowed down using the settings though.

To be fair, the broad strokes of the combat system are essentially the same as the IE games. I don't think combat in PoE is any more "impactful" than the IE games, and while it is slightly faster paced, that's not necessarily a good thing.

I actually did enjoy the overall style of the combat in the IE games, which PoE successfully captures, I just wasn't fond of many of the specific mechanics (which is mostly due to the AD&D 2e rules they were based on, which are complete garbage). It's on the level of specific mechanics that PoE really differs. I'm actually curious about how great the perceived differences will be for more casual players. I played a lot of tabletop AD&D 2e, spent a lot of time with BG2 and Torment and I've been following PoE's development closely, and played every build of the backer beta. As a result, I'm very aware of how different the games are mechanically. Add to that all the time I (mis)spent on the Obsidian forums, where every minute detail is obsessed over, debated, and blown out of all proportion, and I really have no idea how the game will be perceived by someone who played the IE games on normal, ten or more years ago, and is now coming to PoE without knowing that much about it.

Honestly, I think the average player may not really notice much difference between PoE and their memories of what playing an IE game was like.

I thought about it some more, and the 30% CTD rate on scene transitions was probably an exaggeration on my part. There's transitions in and out of interiors, etc., and most of those went fine. It's probably closer to 15%. Still a lot. Enough that I save before entering every new area.

Re: Combat - I'm not a huge AD&D guy so THAC0 crazies or whoever will probably have a more nuanced opinion on POE's combat mechanics. But I think it feels really good. It doesn't place as much emphasis on misses, which makes it feel more modern. Rather than miss someone 11 times in a row then hit them for 20 points, BG-style, you're more likely to hit 8 out of 11 times for a few pts of dmg each time. At least it feels that way to me.

Also what platform / System RAM ?

2011 Macbook Pro booted into windows via Boot Camp - so for all intents and purposes it is a Windows machine. 4GB RAM - 1GB nvidia gfx card. 32bit Intel CPU.

Would you, by any chance, know the size of the actual download?

I don't recall exactly - I think the Steam install was between 10 and 15GB.

Yep, that's very true of how combat felt to me in the backer beta. MUCH better way of handling things vs BG, IMHO, specially for a video game.

Super glad to hear this. I've always hated the way you miss all the goddamn time in some RPGs.

"One problem with playing on easy in this game is you'll miss out on a lot of gear because easy removes enemies from encounters rather than scaling them down

You'll likely never get to face certain types of creatures either"

I'll probably tough it out and play normal, hopefully the combat learning curve isn't too high. I'd hate to be thrown into the gauntlet with a full party and tons of skills to manage that I don't even know what do.

Super not glad to hear this. Sounds like the kind of irritating easy difficulty implementation that doesn't actually make the game any easier.

Were animal companions changed to not tie their health to their ranger? My bear keeps "dying" but I'm completely fine. It also seems that my bear only has stamina, no health, so as long as I'm healthy we can both continue to press forward regardless of how much of a beating the bear takes.

(This is from the current backer beta, btw)

Anyone have any information if playing the game with a party of 4 is doable? I don't want to face an impossible end game and have to level up 2 other members just to be able to finish it. :(
