Pillars of Eternity Beta - Torment: Tides of the Beetles

This game is not especially easy on Normal Difficulty. At least for me and my party makeup.I've wiped a few times within the first 3 levels, and had to take on a dungeon boss multiple times before I got him tanked correctly and took him down.

Edit: It's not especially hard in a scary way either. Feels properly balanced.
 
Looks like I gotta take a break from divos to play this. I'm 50 hours in and about to finish hiberhiem. Fuckkkkkk it's so long.

I don't know how I'm going to pass my current uni courses. We're gonna start having this semester's final exams and report deadlines and shit soon, but for the next 4 to 6 weeks I won't be able to focus on anything else than BB and PoE. Gonna be a rough spring.

Do it the night before. No ones got time for that academic bullshit. Tell the teacher you are in the middle of the crpg revival. He or she will understand.
 
Couple mechanics questions: What are some ways to build a great sword wielding Barbarian? How should I use them in battle?

That's going to be my first character more than likely, I've been playing around with the beta but I don't have a good grasp of combat yet.

I'd say take a look at the available abilities and talents.

You could go idiot muscle barbarian, that's all muscle and brute force, but they also do AoE damage so Intellect is actually pretty useful.

Made a slight descriptive error in the video - Bloodlust requires you to actually kill two enemies for it to take an effect, not one.
 
Hello folks, could anyone help me out? :)
I'm really drawn to the lore behind the Cipher but the class has some mechanical flaws that make it unattractive in the end,
namely the the idea to go melee with a frail character and the fact I always favor a ranged character over a melee one.

Can I expect to specialise or even exclusively play the Cipher as a ranged class?
 
Yes you can, I recommend a Blunderbuss or an Arquebus build because you'll only need to fire one shot to get enough focus to cast a few spells again.

You could also use a reach weapon if you don't want to go right into melee (Quarterstaff, Pike)

There's a post somewhere on the BB forums that say Bow isn't too bad either, I assume because whip adds some dmg per hit and what not, and with the deeper focus pool once you have the talents, you might need 2-3 hits? I was planning to do Bow cause it looked kinda better even though it seems Bows are pretty bad in general.

If you do Arquebus/Blunderbuss, don't you also need to reload? So like, you cast some spells, shoot once, cast more spells, but then you have to reload before you can fire again cause you don't reload while casting sells, correct?
 
Nah I would not recommend using a Bow, because you have to spend more actions/time in combat building focus - with a firearm you can fire one shot, then cast a few spells again, which probably ends up doing more (AoE) damage.

You need to reload, yeah. I still think it's a lot faster, particularly if you have high Dexterity (which increases cast speed, reload speed and recovery time).
 
There's a race called Godlike? Yep ok, PoE's gonna be the first RPG where I'm not gonna be playing as a human.

Cipher with Blunderbuss or Arquebus it is – I quite like the idea too, a modern animancer with modern weaponry.

Oh is the amount of focus based on the damage dealt then? I assumed it was a flat amount per hit, so a faster attackspeed like a bow would generate more focus over time, at the cost of doing less damage with the weapon(but more spells so nice). If it's based on dmg done, it'd make more sense to use a gun of some sort then, guess I'll change that.
 
There is a talent that gives you a flat +2 per hit or something on top of the current amount so you may be able to make up the deficit with that. I haven't been playing heaps of Cipher myself but others I know have been highly recommending guns over other ranged weapons for focus building.

There's a specific weapon in the beta called Lead Spitter, it's a blunderbuss that bypasses 7 DR. It's amazing for building focus (and amazing for Rogues too).

Yeah I read about Lead Spitter, though that will only be relevant for a short while I guess in the entire game. I'll need to see what's the Cipher companion speced as though first, hopefully it's not too focused so I can pick whatever. In fact I hope most companions aren't too restricted to specific playstyles, I'm ok with some limitations but hate when you're forced into a very specific build due to the companion being high level when he joins and having a lot of preselected stuff. Can always make a custom one but meh, I want to see the dialogues and quests and what not.

You're forgetting the Enchantment system.

Did they change how enchanting works? I thought I saw that Fine/Exceptional/Superb are now the same as DMG and ACC enchantments so you can't stack them all together but only apply one at a time. So have Fine Enchantment will be replaced if you try and apply Damage 2 or Accuracy 2 bonuses rather than both being applied.

Some things still confuse me in the backer beta, could you clarify for me again?

What does Full Attack our Primary Attack mean actually? Also sometimes in the tooltips it will say "(+10 Accuracy)" for a spell for example, why?

Full Attack means that if you are dual wielding it makes an attack with both weapons with no recovery time in between the attacks. Full attacks are quite strong.

Primary attack just makes a weapon attack.

(+10 Accuracy) usually refers to Wizard and Priest spells and abilities - the +10 Accuracy is to make up for their natural accuracy deficit (they start with 15 instead of 25) so that their spells are as accurate as the most accurate classes attacks are. They're only meant to be worse with weapons.

I would call that sub-optimal, although if you were going to do it, I'd use a Rod.

What are the conditions that result in this, are they fixed or random? Like a dice roll or specific circumstances such as an active ability? I know stuff like Blinding Strike applies to both weapons, but would that also result in a Full Attack?

Fixed.

Blinding Strike uses a full attack (an attack with both weapons, if applicable).

Knockdown uses a Primary Attack (one attack, followed by recovery)
 
I really, really wish they had included a 'lock difficulty settings' tick box at the start. I fucking hate being tempted to change the difficulty when things get tough. I usually don't go for it, but it's just so frustrating knowing that the option is always there, calling out to you.

Modders, help.

Pogba is out for the rest of the season m8, and we're dead without that perfect human specimen. :)

I'm playing Bloodborne first, so at the very least I'll have a better idea of what to expect once I dive into PoE in a couple of weeks.
 
Does anyone know if might affects chanting chants/invocation/summons?
I really wanna try out a low might high defense chanter

I imagine it will effect the damage some invocations do, possibly summons as well, otherwise though it should be doable. Even just 3 Might only results in a -21% dmg, that's not a monumental amount.

If you just want to tank and buff via chants that should do fine.
