Yes I do this for all my games now.

Buy the game on your US account and as long as your PS4 is activated as the primary console on the U.S. account, you can play the game without any issues on your UK account.

So the US account has to be set as the primary console when I buy the game on the US PSN store, then when it has downloaded I can set my UK account back
to being the primary account and I will be able to play the game on my UK account?

You can have both accounts set as primary at the same time, the setting is for the account rather than the console.

if primary is set on both accounts then you can play the game on your UK account.
