I'm trying to avoid too many spoilers but are rogues needed for like lockpicking and whatnot like they are in some games and are practically required or can that be covered by other classes / characters?

lockpicking and trap disarming are tied to the "mechanics" skill that everybody has. Rogues get a +2 "mechanics" bonus, though. But you can have any other class as a lockpicker, if you want :P

It can be covered by others. Skills are not dependent on class or attributes (though you can get free points in them depending on class/background in character creation), so anyone can be your Mechanics monkey.

Rogues in PoE are hard-hitting single-target damage-dealers who have access to misdirection and dirty fighting tricks.

Lil OT Durante but I'm getting a new PC soon and it's my first time experimenting with downsampling. Couple pages back you said that the Nvidias solution can cause problems if the desktop is not in the same res as the game. Is there any reason to change the downsampled res of desktop back and forth or can I just leave it at that?
The problem is specific to Unity games. Basically, it's impossible to downsample in those with DSR without also changing the desktop resolution before you launch the game. So the (somewhat cumbersome) process is change desktop resolution -> launch game and play -> change desktop resolution back.

Of course, given the expected average length of 16 hours for PoE sessions, that won't be much overhead :P

More people are watching Pillars than Bloordborne atm - didn't expect that, even if it means nothing.

I have a question regarding the system requirements - Can I play fluently with a HD 4000 graphics solution? I can only play on my Laptop for the coming week... Is Unity good at scaling down?

Sorry if I'm inopportune, is there no hope for GeDo w/ PoE?

Only if they manage to get the codes out to backers in time for release. If they get delayed a day or two, we could be stuck downloading the game while buyers who pre-loaded are going in.

Either way I'm super excited for this one. My dreams of an Intelligent Fighter being effective have finally been realized!

I believe they said Monday or Tuesday? So if not today then certainly tomorrow. The game isn't insanely huge - about 7 GB compressed if I read that right.

Every PC gamer who gets DAI DLC rather than Pillars of Eternity deserves the future they are complicit in creating.

Anyway, I'll just continue to live in my comfortable reality bubble where that is an option chosen by only 3 people. Globally.

I loved DAI, but still...it's been 4 months. I haven't thought about the game, much less played it since shortly after the new year. I mean, I'll play this DLC eventually, but it's hard to get re-excited about a game I already played when there's new things I haven't played.

I've run PoE on a 2012 Thinkpad X1 Carbon running Linux. It's not exactly smooth, but it is playable.

GeDoSaTo works perfectly with PoE (and you can skip the desktop resolution gymnastics you need with DSR):

Got the PoE guidebook through the post finally. Perfect timing. I'll be able to read through it in time for launch and maybe get some ideas for main character background.

At the moment leaning towards human Monk like my first BG2 character. Play into a theme of soul reincarnation across universes.

-cut-

GeDo is da best, and i don't say this because of you [:P]
DSR is a really good thing but it lack in terms of option, that's why I'm not using it so much. After all gedosato is still the best way to achieve high quality downsampling.
Sorry for this gigantic OT, 2 more days until the D1!

Does anybody think that the Priest could be one of the most overlooked classes? By picking your god you worship you thus affect all of your roleplaying choices from then on. I'm wondering if it's almost like a karma system that you set the rules for?

How are the mages in the game? I'm trying to stay as spoiler free as possible. I usually roll mage in the IE games and most rpgs. Are they still great here?

By all accounts they are, not the powerhouses they are in other games though, but as solid as all the other classes. There's also a couple unique magic users as well worth checking out. I don't think you'll be disappointed.

Paladins also have a similar system. I definitely think Priests are definitely overlooked because their cool RP system is also shared by paladins, but not tied to a god, and their spell casting is overshadowed by the Wizard's.

However they look like a really useful class to have on your team.
Durance is written by Chris Avellone so maybe people just don't want to double over, and have the Chris Avellone companions on their team

from what I've seen their spell list is rather boring, mostly aoe damage spells iirc. Chanters and cyphers got all the cool spells

also, the guy looks like a madman
companion portrait
instant addition to my party

Chris Avellone said:
At a specific level, in Eternity, the original premise of the companions I wrote (Durance and the Grieving Mother) was unpeeling the layers and discovering what they were at the core – unpeeling these layers involved slipping stealthily into their unconscious, a dungeon made out of their memories. There, the player could go through an adventure game-like series of interactions, exploring their memories using psychological items important to both your character and to them as emotional keys to thread your way through the memories – but carefully, without revealing your presence. The memory dungeon was to uncover their shared history, how it impacted you, and the core of who they were as people.
And their core was pretty unpleasant. Both of them were very bad, very weak people, committing not only violations on each other, but on the player as well. When faced with the discovery that your allies, even if they fiercely support you and fight for a larger cause, have some pretty horrid faults, what do you do? Do you pass sentence? Do you forgive? Do you assist them to reach an understanding? And what I found more interesting with the spiritual physics in the Eternity world is that a death sentence isn’t a sentence – killing someone actually sets a soul free to move on to the next generation. So if you intend to punish someone in a world like that, either out of revenge or to correct their behavior, how do you do it when execution is not an answer?
The elements above got stripped out of the companions in the end, so I’m happy to share it here (and I may re-examine it in the future). Overall, I thought they raised interesting questions for the player to chew on, and it was interesting to explore those themes, as most game narratives and franchises wouldn’t allow for such examinations – still, Eternity was intended to be a more personal project for Obsidian where we can stretch our narrative legs more, both in structure and themes.
Durance sounds like he's gonna be a bit of a ride

I'm wondering, will this game have party banters which cause one member to leave or end up each members fighting if you don't interfere? That was one of the best parts in BG.

Here is my incredibly verbose guide to the Pillars of Eternity Character Creation. It contains pretty much everything you would want to know about making a character for Pillars of Eternity with an interest in mechanics (although I also touch on what exactly is reacted to in the game for RP purposes).

The guide is fully chaptered. The guide is for everyone from completely new players to RPGs to Infinity Engine veterans who may not have the beta. There are many beta backers here that have already played the game, but there might be some information in there worth listening to.

This will be part one of a three part guide. The second part will focus on basic controls, options menu, mechanics and combat. The third will showcase a few encounters with each of the classes and showcase how to play them.

This guide will also be spoiler free if you have already seen the E3 Press Demo from 2014.

I hope you like it, and I hope it helps ease you into the game.

Part 2 and 3 will be available over the next few days.

Thanks for this.

Aww, that was a sweet video.

There isn't a rogue companion so that everyone uses me as their main, obvs

I'll admit that I was considering using your portrait as a rogue, but...

I'm getting more of a ranger-y vibe from the portrait

You're clearly a ranger.

I agree with these two that your portrait screams ranger to me.

I'm pretty sure they said there would be. At the very least there should be some interesting party banter and dynamics. The only thing I'm bummed about is no romance :\

Can't decide whether to get this on GOG or Steam. D: There's a deal right now on some site where I can get the Steam version for like $33, so about $12 cheaper than GOG. :<

But it just feels like it belongs on my GOG account, y'know? I just want GOG Galaxy to hit so I don't have to keep track of patches anymore. T_T They revealed that shit way too early and we haven't heard anything about it since. >_>

so hawt

I'd get it on Steam like you said for patches. Only modern games I get on GOG are like games I wasn't hugely excited for that have probably been fully patched by the time I get them.
