Bloodborne Reviews Thread

Game of the year already, perhaps? Hard to see anything else in the pipe that's guaranteed to be quite the same critical darling.

They sound correct to me.

A small amount. Saying that a game like this getting great reviews will change publishers minds is nuts. Games like Destiny will still make more money, blind that's what their goal is.

Games like Destiny cost way more money to make. Publishers will make games that are very profitable. I think Bloodborne will be very very profitable. I am pretty confident Bloodborne 2 will be announced next year. This is a franchise to stay.

Glad this one turned out well. I'll be sure to pick it up sometime down the line. Haven't played either of the Dark Souls, but I beat Demon's Souls once, and I kind of dug the Alpha for Bloodborne (except for the boss).

Good morning neoga...

HOLY FUCK 93 MC

how did gaf react? what did i miss?
I've never been interested in the scores but I also want some sort or summarization of the thread.

Like with Dark Souls 2 I'm kind of amazed and a little incredulous at how these niche games get championed in the mainstream sites. These are the same reviewers that can't deal when other games give them just a little pushback.

Awesome scores! However (and I'm sure I'll be smashed for this)... I kind of would have felt better about scores in the high 80s. Why? Because these almost exclusively excellent scores make me think the game is quite a bit more accessible than Souls, and easier to make your way through. And we have people saying that very thing right here in the thread. That's disappointing to me. Although expected. The video footage has consistently looked less challenging than what I'm used to from DeS/DkS. People kept telling me "nah, they've just turned the difficulty down for the demo", but it now seems like maybe that wasn't it. Maybe it's just an easier game. Now you'll tell me that the true challenge for veteran players is in the Chalice dungeons. And that's great, I'll play and enjoy those. But that's still side content in my book. The main adventure seemingly being a comparatively easy ride is not what I was hoping for.

Still really excited, still picking up my CE tomorrow (Sweden), but yeah.

The online ads now include a quote from Edge "this generations first truly essential game"

10/10?

Either way, excellent news. Hopefully the sales match the ratings as this looks amazing. (Plus I hope I'm better at this than I am at souls haha)

I'd say the following will likely be very strong contenders:

The Legend of Zelda for Wii U *
Batman: Arkham Knight
The Witcher III
Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain
Xenoblade Chronicles

* At least one can dream it'll see a release this Fall/holidays.

I can think of some reasons as to why. I mean, going into (technically) a Souls game and complaining it's too hard, would likely create a pretty big backlash with people questioning your skill as a gamer. And there's also the part where it's very much expected to be hard right from the start, it being the nature of the beast and all, so the mindset is probably different going into this.

But I'm just speculating here.

Doubtful. Bayonetta 2 was similarly praised and received little to no GOTY awards. NIche Japanese games don't tend to rake in my GOTY awards.

But Bayonetta had the Nintendo curse and the TnA curse. Sony has been really pushing Bloodborne so it's hard to call it niche And after uncharted's delay this is their biggest game this year.

I think it's the opposite. Most of these reviewers are gamers. Hardcore gamers. I think an even greater challenge (tough but fair) would garner a higher score from many of these outlets and not the opposite. This isn't "Joe Call of Doody" gamer writing the reviews for the most part.

I've been playing for three hours and can't even figure out how to level up my character.

Here's the another thing you have to consider. If you personally are good at Souls games now, then you are already going to be better at this game than you were when you originally started in the Souls series. So your level of skill is already starting at a higher level than the previous games in the series. That colors your viewpoint to say that the game is simply easier when it's quite possible that you're simply better than you were 1-2+ years ago for the previous games.

Whelp - can't argue with those scores. Expecting decent sales for this. The game is on the best selling console, has little competition and is sure to get good word of mouth to go with the scores.

DAMN! Sitting at 93 on Metacritic, this game and Super Mario 3D World are officially the highest rated games on the current generation so far.

Was awake for 10 minutes before I realised the reviews would be in. Let myself down! Amazing scores so far. Friday can't come soon enough

I think it's because the games are niche that they score so well, hear me out:

Many big publications that employ a good number of reviewers tend to be selective when awarding reviews for niche genres.

While anyone might review an accessible game like The Order, they will often give a racing game like Gran Turismo to someone who has both the necessary skillset and understanding of the genre.

Souls games fall in a similar category where they are almost a subgenre unto themselves and I suspect that many big sites have a pronounced fan of the series under their employ that will tackle the review. Because of this it's likely that the games are appreciated because the reviewer has a thorough understanding of what it set out to accomplish

Alien Isolation being a great example of this.

It's because they know what to expect now (it's not an obscure, impenetrable Japanese game coming out of seemingly nowhere) and they probably assign the review to the staff member(s) who are into the series.

I have zero interest in the game but I'm certainly interested in this thread, later when I get home I'll read the whole thing lol

Still waiting for the 4players review. One of the few trustworthy ones imo.
Glad to see it got so many good reviews so far though. Seems like this'll finally be the success to Dark Souls we always wanted.
