So, are you guys "scared"? Is it like a horror game? Some reviewers tend to say it's so intense and actually genuinely frightening.

At least one guy on GAF gave a detailed opinion that it is easier and not as tense as Souls games. Is the regain system easy to exploit in the sense that you get your health back easily due to enemies getting stunned?

the ambiance is a bit unsettling even in the setting sun within Yharnam. There was a moment that actually did get me to jump in town too lol. So yeah, it can get you if you relax too much.

It does very much feel like the atmosphere within Tower of Latria

Holy shit people stop relying on blood vials. There's a system in place that almost forces you to learn enemy attacks and rewards you for doing well (and punishes you for fucking up).

Yes, even the beginning section is quite intimidating. Your hands tend to be constantly sweaty

The cane is fun, but I am going to save it for after I get used to the new mechanics. As much as I was looking forward to using it, I would rather have more damage output per strike than resorting to dancing around peppering with blows. Overall, it just seems like dealing maximum damage is the best way to play for settling in here.

Yeah, especially if you don't know all the enemies movesets yet and you're a bit impatient like I can be sometimes... it's good to kill things in a couple hits so you don't increase the odds of getting yourself killed lol. Rolled a new character for the axe and its a lot of fun.

I find it scary but this is my first Souls game so I'm sure the 'vets' of the subgenre are desensitized to certain things. I get a sense of dread with every room I enter, as if anything or anyone can pop up and kill you at an instant.

My plan is to use that until I find the
Stake Driver
. Which I will use unless it's like absolutely terrible and worthless. I might use it even then. It seems like both weapons favor strength, so I guess I'll go with the strength-focused origin.

It might be just me but I feel the weapon you mentioned is super hard to use. The trick mode is kinda weird and it doesn't have a very long reach. I hope you figure it out so you can tell me how to do it :)

The regen system is hardly exploitable. The amount you can heal is rarely all the damage you took, and each strike heals just a bit.

And yeah, it's very tense. It doesn't feel any easier, first boss had me on my feet all the time, and I died multiple times before getting to it.

Just finished a play session of about 9hr, got to get ready for work now. I started as Waste of Skin, with the cleaver and shotgun. Later changed to the excellent
Saw Spear
and have stuck with it. Have beaten three bosses.

So far, it's worse than DS and DS2 but still a great game. Some issues:

- Loading loading loading. If you're not super pro, you're going to be dying a decent amount early on, and the loading takes forever! Not to mention, to warp between areas you first have to travel back to the hub, which means double loading times! The screen doesn't even have lore tidbits to read. :/
- Coop is obscurely locked out. Me and my friend had to look up how to get the second component required to play together (
you need 10 insight to open a shop up in the hub
).
- Lack of equipment. I've found only one set of equipment so far and only 3 or 4 have been available for purchase. Weapons are similarly sparse and the gem system does not make up for it.

Maybe the last one will be remedied as I progress. Still enjoying it very much! It's definitely a Souls game.

I've rolled two characters and before I've fought the first boss I've found myself with around 5-8k blood echoes. Would you guys just save these for after the boss fight so you can get insight and talk to the doll to upgrade attributes (risky since you can lose them if you die to the boss), or did you spend most of them on the hunter armor set + consumables before the boss fight? Seems like the latter might be the way to go...

I wouldn't say it's actually scary like.. how Alien Isolation is scary, or Outlast is scary. Bloodborne is intense, in that.. if Dark Souls was intense because of losing things, and having to make your way back, etc, Bloodborne is intense because the exploration is so much more.. encouraged, I guess would be the word? You move faster, you strike faster, you're just in general more agile, and at best are moving through enemies with alarming speed. The flipside to this, however, is you don't get the time to really absorb your surroundings very well, and so going as fast as possible may lead to you ending up in very strange surroundings, and getting killed with no idea of how to return.
Combine this with the fact that (at least in the first area) there are legitimate choke points that you'll have to be very careful around, if you don't know what you're heading into, every corner is a question of how ballsy you're feeling, and with each corner you grow ever so slightly more courageous, until eventually you won't expect something and it will be the end of you.

Regain system isn't really easy to exploit, in my mind anyway. You'll almost never get all of it back, but it creates some interesting design paths where maybe a fall is only really negotiable if you can get health back at the bottom by hitting this guy or whatever.

I made it to the werewolves last night, took them down with help from molotov cocktails, explored a little more and found the shortcut back to the latern and called it a night. Since I can't level up yet I bought all of the hunter gear the dream area vendor was selling. Looking forward to getting to some boss battles today. :)

Also, I probably spent way too long there but I had fun slowly clearing out the bonfire area mobs.

I went from 100% battery to 8% in 5 hours with an iPhone 6 Plus.

That should say how much teaching I did today, in comparison to how much I spent on GAF :lol

I played just a little bit, but the game exceeded my expectations. The gameplay is so fluid, such a huge improvement over Dark Souls II.

Managed to somehow entirely skip cleric beast and found myself ambushed by
father gascgione
, who proceeded to kick my ass. First death (after the obligatory first one) :(

Game's amazing. Newcomers, take it slooooowwww. Be cautious. Abuse the hell out of those pebbles, they're amazing.

Loading times are long, but I don't really give a shit. And I don't know where some people are coming from with a sub 30 framrate, it's fine for me.

Definitely upgrade your armor, it helps. There is an even better set of armor hidden somewhere in the starting section but I won't spoil where, but you would do well to find it

I'm about 20 hours in....level 50 and its affecting my health.

I feel super stressed and tense when I play

Get headaches, jitters and lots of pressure behind my eyes....tight chest etc. This game needs to let up lol.

Thanks for the opinions :P

Are load times really bad? Waiting to respawn after each death?

Also, does anyone know if they gave any word on when to expect the loading patch? I sort of want to either wait or play VERY slow depending on when it's coming

Started off with the threaded cane. It was eating through mobs in its transformation mode (chain whip). Got to the boss and it was absolutely terrible for damage. Rolled a new character with the axe and loving it. The saw cleaver is probably the most balanced starting weapon but the axe just destroys everything. That transformation-extend L2 swipe is insane for clearing multiple enemies in one/two hits.
I started with the cane because of GAF. Don't make me regret this decision.

I like the attack range on the transformed cane. How's the attack range on the other weapons?

Has it been confirmed that they will be able to reduce load times? They're long, but they're not ruining the game for me like they did in Destiny.

Only 2 hours until I can play it. I'm really hoping there's an amazing moment at some point like kicking the ladder in Dark Souls.

I'm not really scared in the traditional horror sense.

But a lot of the time I'm afraid for my survival. Alone in uncharted enemy territory, far away from the nearest bonfire and packing thousands of souls. And then you're chased, no idea where to run, health is low and you're way outnumbered. Panic ensues.

Then you die and try again a bit wiser, or you achieve glorious victory and give yourself a tap on the back. Until the next corner when you die.

Is there any YouTube video out there that showcases all the possible traversal/combat moves? Also, description of inventory/character management.

I will follow the recommendation of Gametrailers crew and go with Professional+Cane+Shotgun.

Can someone explain how to
frontstab the Cleric Beast
? I've done it twice, but I'm not quite sure how I've triggered it.

Aim for the face shoot him with your gun. if you hit him in the face 5 times he drops and u stab him in the head. 5 times with shotgun not sure how much with pistol.

I'd stop playing for a little while if I was you mate.

You have to hit him with your firearm like right as he swings to stagger him and be close enough to him to follow up with R1 immediately.

The attack range on the cane transformation is pretty equal if not the same to the other starter weapons in my opinion. The R1 attacks just weren't doing much damage to the first boss. I'm not sure if my class had anything to do with that, I was running Military Veteran that has 13 skill points to start with, and the cane is a C rating scale off Skill. First boss strategy tips with cane if interested:
I've found that dashing behind him after an attack and using a charged R2 then bailing seems to do the most damage. Sometimes it would even stun him and allow me to go up to his face and hit R1 for a critical stab hit. Molotavs do a lot of damage to him as well.

I just need to know what the easiest starting class is to use when my copy from Gamefly arrives. This will be my first real shot at a Souls game, and I'll take any legit advantage I can get.
