Titan X Launch / Review / Tears Thread

Just got my Titan X!

I have no idea how to overclock this thing lol. Would one of you mind just print screening the overlock settings you are using? Just need to look at what you changed and what software you used lol. Currently have the precision X16 installed. Would be much appreciated!

Precison X is a mess with it's menus tbh. Start at +100 and go from there until you reach a point where it is unstable. Then dial it back until stable, and start working on the memory. Make sure you create a custom fan profile too.

Is there any reason you're not using MSI Afterburner? Just I find Precision to be incredibly clunky myself.

Thanks a lot bruv, will start at 100 as you recommend! Much appreciated.

My card from Nvidia is finally coming in tomorrow after sitting in Fedex warehouse since Friday.

I caved and I also have another from Newegg coming in tomorrow. Looking forward to installing these in a Corsair Air 240.

Only thing left to do is wait for a nice 4k IPS Gsync Monitor.

Decided to hook my ROG Swift back up. Loaded up some BF4 MP.

lol

cards are yawning. 144fps locked w/ Gsync, only 70% GPU usage. Crazy responsive. Really want a Gsync 4k monitor.

Skip 100 on the core and go straight to 200. I have yet to read a review or an owner that can't hit 200 as of yet with this card. Beyond 200 you want to go a little at a time.

Just a heads up for those with older motherboards / CPU that are planning on SLIing.

Got this from the tech team at Nvidia:

"If you're not even getting the MB BIOS screen then this is definitely a hardware compatibility issue, likely between MB system BIOS and the Titan BIOS. I discussed this with our development team and we're actually investigating a similar issue reported on a Dell MB. The Dell MB would beep 6 times repeatedly when two Titan X cards are installed, no video at all. Works fine with single Titan X or with GTX780 SLI. This could be the MB not capable of supporting GPU with such large memory size, but we won't know until we can hook up a debugger to verify."

Still haven't heard the results but be cautious if you have rigs similiar to mine.

What is your MB?

Good. I can't wait for the Acer XB270HU to drop. Finally gonna be running 1440p. 8-)

You wanna slang your Swift while I wait for the Acer? :)

I really want a pair of titans, but I already have two 980s and two 970s in another computer. Maybe I'll wait until whatever is next in the pipeline. Meh. :(

So...somebody with the same motherboard as me is having the same exact problem with Titan X SLI. Looks like it's some sort of unforeseen problem with the amount of video memory that this motherboard can handle.

For those with SLI setups, what motherboard are you using? I'm hoping that SOMEBODY is using a motherboard with a LG 1155 socket still :p

Currently using a Rampage IV Black Edition.

I remember back when I had a Z68 board, I had to do a BIOS update for it to work with the OG Titan. Have you done that?

Bah, now the store I've ordered from is starting to push the delivery date. Was March 27, now it's April 1.

Wish I could just order it from Nvidia here in Europe. I get to wait longer, pay more, and get an inferior looking box from Asus. Salty!

The most recent BIOS is a beta BIOS so I never updated to that one. I've updated to the one before that but the BIOS is from like...2 years ago.

So here is where I am after another day of diagnosis:

  • The problem persisits with a single titan x at stock speed (CPU and GPU). I've tested both cards separately and the behavior is identical. Since the odds of both titans being defective in the exact same way are slim, I'm eliminating GPU defects for now.
  • After the system warms up with 5 or so reboots, it ALWAYS works for whatever duration it is powered on. Crysis at max settings, over clocking, 3d mark, Hyper pi, everything works without a hitch. This eliminates any issues with the power outlet as clearly enough current is available. Since it does work after warm up, this eliminates firmware/bios issues or anything software related. I've updated the bios as well and made no difference. I reinstalled windows just in case after a full format. Didn't make any difference.

Replacing the card with my temp GT 730 card works flawlessly. Key differences between the 2 that are relevant:

  • Titan X has a separate power line from PSU
  • Titan X uses 16 PCIe lanes to Mobo whilst GT 730 uses just 8

Which narrows this down to 2 potential components:
  • Faulty PSU where it's not able to deliver enough power till it's warm. I'm seeing many threads online about this. Since I'm within 30 days of my PSU purchase, I'm simply going to return it (1000W evga supernova). Instead I'm getting a Seasonic 1200W platinum. Should have it delivered tonight. Fingers crossed.
  • May be the motherboard works well with 8x PCie, but doesn't handle 16x PCie till it warms up? This isn't a spec problem, since X-99A supports (and is designed for) high end GPUs in SLI. So only possibility is some sort of defect. Seems highly unlikely, but if I'm having trouble with the new PSU as well, then this could be the only other component that could be defective.

I got the same motherboard. Bios v.1401 dated 2015/02/17. No problems at all so far with a single Titan X + 5820K. Both overclocked.

The Supernova is a great PSU, but I'm partial to Seasonic. I'm using a 760W Platinum myself. Good luck!

Thanks for posting this. I don't have a Titan X but I've never gotten around to OC'ing my 970. Now I know at least how to go about doing it.

If you want, I can loan you a Seasonic X-1250 Gold for troubleshooting purposes. I'd ship it to you (just cover the cost) and just send me like $150 in PayPal to hold onto in case you decide to keep it.

Your PSU should be more than fine at 1000W for that build - may just be an issue with the PSU itself.

I have extra parts here, happy to help.

I have an ASUS Titan X on it's way, will be putting in a Rampage III extreme with a w/c i980x oc'd to 4.4Ghz. Shouldn't be any problems right?

Thanks man! But my seasonic is arriving this evening anyway. Since it's a better PSU with higher power than the evga I had, I'd probably just keep it and return the other one at no charge (still within 30 days of purchase). I do appreciate the offer though! :D

Thanks! Really hope the new PSU resolves the problem. Otherwise I'm back to square one! :(

We used http://www.corsair.com/en-us/hxi-se...pply-1000-watt-80-plus-platinum-certified-psu in our SLI showcase PC, if it helps. It was on-show at GDC for the entire event running demos, and as far as I'm aware worked perfectly.

The HX series is known for some weird fluttering noises and coil whine. I'm not sure if that's been sorted out in the newest models or not.
Obviously this will invalidate your warranty, and it will possibly reduce the lifespan of your card, or even kill it outright. You have been warned :)
Yeah, but you can always flash it back to stock before an RMA.

<3

Yay Greenlight! :P

Welp. New PSU delivered! Holy shit that was fast. 7 hours from order to delivery on amazon for just 6 dollars! Guess i'm getting home early to check it out. Pray for me, guys! If this doesn't work… Sigh… Don't want to think about it. It's gonna work, it's gonna work.

Mine came in today. Just installed it and did some preliminary testing.

Got the core Valley stable at 1420mhz. Gonna get to work on the memory now.

Damn, this thing is fast as hell!

My mobo (G1 Sniper 3) has a bug in the BIOS where if you put more than one videocard in certain slot it won't get any video (no BIOS no nothing). Try changing slots.

Andy, is flashing bios against the warranty? I always thought that this was something that was "ok" to do. I have never done it and frankly too scared to do it, but was just curious if flashing voids the warranty.

Congrats!!!

Just a word on benchmarking, depending on program your OC can vary. For example, one of my cards is happy as a clam at +200 with an effective 1402mhz using Valley, however anything above that and it will eventually crash. However with 3dmark, I can push it to +250 and it completes the benchmarks without issues.

What I have found is that +200 with a +400 on the memory is rock stable regardless of benchmark or gaming. I will have my cards under H20 by tomorrow afternoon, so we will see what else I can squeeze out of them.

I'm torn between getting a reference card now, or a superclocked version later (whenever they're available). I'm pretty impatient though. Might just go for one now....

Finally got the Titan's in. It was a pain to get them in, but they look pretty awesome, getting ready to put it through the paces now.

Is that the Air 240?

I'm tempted to put a mATX board in mine for SLI but i feel it'll be so cramped :/

How are your temps? I'd be SLI'ing GTX 980's though..

Yeah it's the Air 240, the cards are pretty close, just ran Firestrike and the top card maxed out at 84 and the bottom at 77, going to create a more aggressive fan profile to try and keep it under 80, it is loud though at load.

You can easily apply your own OC to the base card to get the same performance that the SC provides. It is really easy and almost everyone is able to add +200 to the core and on average I have seen +400 to the memory.

Absolutely LOVING that!

Now that I've switched from 3x 980s to 2 Titan Xs, I'm wanting to go Micro-ATX as well. I was thinking of going with the Obsidian 350D, but I think you might have just convinced me to get the Air 240 instead!

Great job man!

This looks pretty amazing, congrats. Like Ske3tch said, get you a Nvidia bridge and complete the look!

Good work

Damn, 2 Titan Xs can do 5K at sub-60fps on games.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AxUZPvzsPXY

Telling yall, these things are no joke. Finally able to play at 4k maxed with 60fps. At 2560x1440 they hardly sweat.

I started Far Cry 4 yesterday on my ROG Swift and maxed everything including Nvidia Gameworks...80+ fps range and with GSYNC it was very smooth. Most satisfied I've been with GPU purchases in a long time.

If you care about resell, try and get them from EVGA. That transferable warranty to the next owner is pretty great.
