Pillars of Eternity Beta - Torment: Tides of the Beetles

It's going to be hard to choose between Chanter and Cipher. They both look so cool.
If you're really stuck, you can take both. The game allows you to create multiple PCs if you're happy to forgo the dialogue, etc. of the written companion that would have taken that slot in your party.

I definitely want companions, i'll probably just end up flipping a coin or something.

Haven't kept up to speed on this. Do we know if the backer rewards like the collector's editions shipped? I recall seeing an email that Obsidian wanted to have these to us on the 26th.

How are games patched on GOG? Do you have to download the entire installer again? If that's the case I may opt for a Steam key.

Sometimes you only download and apply the patch separately, but there's always a chance that a big enough patch will make savegames unreadable and you'll end up re-installing the game. If GOG Galaxy had released, I'd get it on GOG, but I opted for Steam this time.

Preeeeeeeloooooaddddeedddddd!

So, uh, where do I download all these sweet digital books and whatnot? I need to read through some to stem the excitement.

From Brandon Adler on the official forum:

You should be able to download any of your rewards that were in your tier in the backer portal once those rewards go live.

And then Darren Monahan expanded on the info:

Everything besides the documentary, novella, and obviously the expansion :) will be up on Thursday 9AM PST / 17:00 CET. Our release party is tomorrow night and to cap off the documentary, the film crew is going to be there to work on the final footage.

They will be in the "products" tab of your control panel once they go live:

You don't. At least until Obsidian puts them up on the Backer Portal, which has me more than a bit irked. Seems they're prioritizing Keys and will start releasing bits of the rewards sometime today, or not at all until tomorrow.

Entered my steam key and started the preload right before work. My body is so ready.

I'm going in almost completely blind, and I love it. What difficulty are you guys planning on starting on?

Either normal or hard. I can't be bothered with extra permadeath shenanigans or whatever.

Replacing an Obsidian companion in a party slot? We do not entertain such thoughts.

I had usually leveled up at least once before leaving Candlekeep by killing Firebeard Elvenhair (was that his name?) for 2500xp. I took the piss by running upstairs to cancel his spells then doing laps around the sofa whilst hitting him with a sling as he chased me. Then it was off to Beregost for 900xp from chatting to Marl (angry drunk in the pub) and to kill Firebeard again for another 2500xp! That and the ring of wizardry from the stump at the FAI made the early game a bit easy. Happy days.

I would like to know more about how focus gathering works with the Cipher. Do you gain focus as a % of damage inflicted or a set amount per hit? So would using a two handed sword with high Might generate more or less "focus per second" than dual wielding short swords with high Dexterity? Anyone have a link to something with this type of information?

No extras accessible until steam unlocks the game?
Bummer :(

if we're lucky, we could get some of them today. That depends on... I dunno, something (not quite sure what) they were testing before the game goes live. In any case... I wanted to read some of that stuff before playing the game :(

Yeah I would have preferred getting the Rewards first before the game keys. I'd rather have them to read before release than be able to preload frankly. Then again I have fairly decent Internet so it would only take me 20-40 minutes to DL the game and not everyone else can download the game that fast.

Just sucks because I'm not going to push off playing the game to read the extra materials and I don't have that much free time to do both.

There are people on the Obsidian forums planning out six-PC min-maxed parties because the companions' builds/attributes "suck."

I'm like... go play Icewind Dale, fellas.

I hate this obsession with minmaxing.

Indeed. My DL speed isn't that great anyway, but I still would've preferred to get the rewards before the keys. Oh well, not that big of a deal. I won't go out on a limb to complain and declare Obsidian will never get a penny from me EVER AGAIN.

If we're lucky, Obsidian will complete the testing they need to do on the delivery platform for the backer's site and put them up sometime today. If not, they'll be available when the game unlocks tomorrow.

Ew.
And people mock the romance-requesting crowd when these people spread their nonsense?
Obvs I'm joking, everyone should play the game the way they like

Am I going to end up replaying this game like 15 times? I think so. I find something I want to do with almost every race and every character class. I just can't pick one!

Eh. They're not infallible as writers. I might find a slot for a second character of mine.

I was thinking about making a 2nd PC to have a rogue, since my actual character is going to be chanter, but I'm probably just gonna have my char be the trapper since Chanters can be fine at mechanics anyway.

I'm in a similar position. My main won't be mechanically-inclined, but I can dump that responsibility on a companion. I want a rogue for the sneak attacks. Not that I'm min-maxing, mind you. Just searching for a fun party.

Thank you kindly.

I wonder how long before there is a Pen and Paper version of the game. Seems like it could be D20 compatible.

It was discussed early on, but Sawyer said it would be difficult to convert the games rules and mechanics into a PnP setting due to it mostly relying on percentage modifiers and stuff.

Would anyone know if the Digital Collector's Book as part of a backer package is the same thing as the hardcover PoE Guidebook Volume One (for example: http://www.amazon.com/Pillars-Eternity-Guidebook-Obsidian-Entertainment/dp/1616558091)?

I think they're one and the same.

The "Pillars of Eternity Guidebook: Volume one", (112 pages, published by Dark Horse) is the "Collector's Book" from the Kickstarter, and is included (in digital form) for backers of the $35 and up tiers. (and physically for the $250 and up tiers.) For the current digital pre-orders, it's only included in the Royal Edition.

I can't decide on a class either. I'll probably just make a second PC. I like the fluff of paladins, but I think a fighter is closer to what I want to play mechanically.

Remember: if you're a chanter, you will never be lonely and never be scared because you'll always have friends* for your birthday party.

*skeletons

In the beta you get 25% of the actual damage dealt back as focus. So there's no particular synergy with fast weapons. They do have a talent called Draining Whip though, which adds bonus focus per hit, which I think might be a fixed bonus but the description wasn't all that clear. Arguably Ciphers make good firearms users since you can open with a very damaging attack and already have enough for a bunch of spells. I want to test Draining Whip with the Blunderbuss, since that could be a nice combo if the bonus applies to each projectile.

All big streamers who streamed PoE jumped into BloodBorne streaming moment BB released yesterday.

exactly. Plus, it's not like PoE is prime streaming material.

I'm not fussed about streaming viewership anyway. It's a niche game, I just want to see it doing as well as it reasonably can. If it ends up pulling huge sale numbers, then even better.

That and a text-heavy RPG isn't exactly ideal streaming material. I watch a few streams the other day, and it just wasn't enjoyable.

I would argue that text heavy cRPG like this can be made enjoyable stream watching experience by personality streaming. If he is engaging while maintaining somewhat good speed in gameplay it can work out. E.g. I watched CohhCarnage when he streamed PoE and I enjoyed quite a lot because how he as personality added to experience.

Thanks. Any high DPS will work then so probably not sword and board. I just hope I don't end up being too squishy. I'm not a fan of ranged weapons although the guns might be a nice change for this type of RPG. Do all classes get more than one weapon set to switch between?

This is probably an easy one for people who have been keeping up to date: How does loot work in this? Random like Diablo or fixed like in BG?

Everyone can have two weapon sets equipped and there are also talents you can take that increase this to three or four, one is an Aumaua racial talent and one everyone can take.

There is some loot that's randomised, mostly junk from chests, but there should be lots of hand placed artifacts like BG also.
