So, all Bloodborne players who haven't played Souls before, how's it going?

I played about two hours of Demon's Souls and about an hour of Dark Souls and dislike the pace of the games. Felt like I always had to walk with my shield up and the combat was so slow.

But you don't have to play them as a turtle shield guy, in actuality, it's much more fun to play as a quick aggresive dodging build. It's all in how you decide to play them.

This.

Exactly.

As a newcomer I thought the game was glitched because USE weapon was grayed out. Then I went online and found someone giving instructions on how to equip weapons in Bloodborne...lol. It's the things like this that are frustrating. Way more time spent than needed when there are monsters to slay.

I mean, it's been a pretty common thing for more than 2 decades to have "use" and "equip" be different things/submenus in RPGs. I get your problem, but I don't see how someone can spend more than a minute trying to figure it out. You just try every button and UI element and figure out what works. Don't you do that in normal games anyway? Whenever I play a game I test out every button and every menu to see what's what.

The game didn't tell me how the menu worked, and it's different from previous souls games so I just messed around with it and figured it out. There is a button legend onscreen on the UI and you can just click on every square to see what happens.

That's all fine. I just think making a more accessible non-standard mode, if well thought out, could be done without ruining the integrity if the game. Obviously the developer had no interest in it. That's fine if a bigger audience is not a priority. I don't think Kid Mode in Viewtiful Joe or Ninja dog mode in Ninja Gaiden lessened the experience for those playing per default design, for example. Trying to block out such things merely to maintain the stigma of being too hard for average gamers seems a bit silly to me if future titles or the studio could benefit from increased exposure.

I really don't believe it can be done. It would completely change the experience. There is a reason that fans of Souls games fret over whether or not each new release will be difficult enough, and it's not because we're all masochists. It's hard to explain to anyone who hasn't spent a lot of time with these games, but anyone who has understands.

Here's a good video about setting your own difficulty: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MM2dDF4B9a4

I played DS2 for about an hour and I didn't really like it, mostly because of the bland visuals.

I bought Bloodborne purely based on hype, and I love it. I watched a few streams on Monday/Tuesday and they really helped with understanding the basic mechanics and various styles of play. It's a little tough at times, but I'm dying far less than I figured I would.

Played maybe half hour of the Souls games so headed into this basically blind. Just beat the Cleric Beast took probably four tries, spent a lot of time gathering souls to upgrade and buy consumables and just exploring and getting the hang of it. Game is amazing and the sense of accomplishment when you beat a boss you've been stuck on for a while is wonderful.

If anyone finds themselves getting frustrated, feel free to set it down for a bit and take a break. Come back into with a better mindset and that'll help loads, less likely to make silly mistakes that way. All in all, super glad I decided to give this a shot and can't wait to really dive into the game now and see what it has in store.

This has always helped me in Souls games. Very useful advice

I am starting to realize that I may have completely skipped the first boss fight. I am about 4 hours in and although half of that was just learning and dying, I am well past where most of you are saying the boss fight is (Time wise). I am down in the sewers and came across this rhino looking thing. so I went up a ladder and ended up finding an elevator that brought me back near the save torch. that is where I ended the night. Am I missing something here? I'm reading about leveling up which I haven't done, and I am reading about making "runs" to gather things for leveling which I haven't done either. I feel like with how far I am in the game these things should make sense to me.

I remember this big guy surrounded by birds on the bridge, but I had been playing for a while so I jumped down to avoid and look for a torch.

Was this the boss?

I feel almost dirty saying this, but I'm really not enjoying BB.

While I don't go out to find and play super difficult or obtuse games, I'm not exactly averse to them either (I absolutely love the Monster Hunter, Etrian Odyssey and FROMSoftware's Armored Core).

Just...something's not clicking with me. Unlike say Monster Hunter, where getting killed by a monster or hitting a wall just makes me want to try again and learn from my mistakes, I just don't feel any motivation to get up and try again here.

Edit: nevermind, the post above mine is better way to say it.

Kinda funny, because if you've found the "rhino", which is actually a giant ass pig, you really are pretty close to the second boss.

Thats still the first area. Its quite big with various routes but don;t worry you haven't skipped the boss fight. You're actually really close to the boss if since you saw the big guy surrounded by crows. You will be able to level up after you see the boss.

from the elevator you went up
go straight, there are some stairs on your left where the first big ogre guy patrols. Go up those stairs and hang an immediate right. Go through the house thats right in front of you. Straight through. You should have to open up a door. Go up the stairs and to the right of that will be a gate you can open up. This leads right to the first lantern and is a short cut to the first two bosses. Go back to the house, go up the stairs and exit the house on the second level. Will be on your left. Up the stairs and you'll be on a big bridge. Go left on the bridge to the end and . . . . . enjoy.

I'm not sure yet. I really like the visuals, the whole tone of the game. But I didn't really enjoy Demon or Dark Souls and thought maybe with co-op and such this would be a whole different beast. I may have gotten it purely on hype and not on if I was going to truely enjoy it. I'll give it more of a fair share before giving up but I'm not enjoying my experince.

Loving it, I'm not entirely new as I dipped my toe in demon's soul and dark souls (first boss each). I love how it kind of just throws you in the deep in. I still haven't gotten to the first boss because I keep exploring the area around me trying to better my technique. It's a refreshing experience from just slashing your way through a game in a couple days.

Went from being able to barely kill the random dudes to killing
Father Gascionne
in one try, no bullets, and 4 potions. I think the bastards in love.

Unfortunately its not for everyone. How much time have you put in? Maybe cooping with some gaffers will help as well.

How far should I upgrade the Cane? I've forged it once, but I don't want to invest a lot of Bloodstones into it if I'm gonna get another weapon soon. I did the professional so I'm a skill based build.

Never played a Souls game before and I am liking it so far. Sure its hard and I have died a bunch of times.. It seems you should be very careful when engaging an enemy in this game. Also seems that some of the enemies is wise to stay away from entirely.

Whenever I need to enter a new area I'm scared as fuck, in fear of being attacked from around the corner or something. Is that normal or how do you guys progress? Just walk in and see what happens?

Haha I can relate. I'm somewhere in between those two: scared as hell but at the same time just strolling in.

this is exactly the kind of thread I was looking for.

still not sure if this game is for me. but one thing is for sure: no denying the beaming reviews and their scores. also, I love good atmosphere in games and Bloodborne is OOZING atmosphere.

The game isn't for me it seems. Shit is hard as fuck, and I simply can't put in the time needed to be good at it these days. I can see why others would like it though. But I havent even gotten to the first boss yet, lol. The checkpoints are so far apart, dying over and over again just to go wayyy back where I started just isn't flying with me right now.

Gonna play it again now though. lol

I think the toughest part is not getting too discouraged when I fail upwards of like 8-10 times on a boss in a row honestly :/

I went through the same thing yesterday on Demon's Souls, but I had to re-start the game because of my crappy build and tactics (it was a great learning experience however). Took down the tower knight on the second attempt today as I had to make slight adjustments with the halberd. I'm guessing it's the same thing with Bloodborne (or any Souls game). :]

I wouldn't worry about it too much. You're going to have more bloodstone shards than you know what to do with before too long.

About to reach the first boss. Played a bit at Gamescom last year, but this is my first experience with a full Souls-inspired title. I've really had to learn myself to adapt to the different playstyle, but I'm slowly getting the hang of it.

Normally I get really frustrated with dying repeatedly and the repetition involved, but somehow this game has the opposite effect on me. The difficulty and overall challenge is an amazing bit of fresh air for me in my opinion.

Just want to say, there's no shame in coming in here and saying your not feeling it.

There's a foregone conclusion that these game's appeal is limited based on the uncompromising nature of the game design. You don't have to feel like your doing something wrong by saying that your having a hard time or not really enjoying the game

I'm on the verge of selling it, but I keep wanting to give it another try.

The first area was hell for me. I died only once at the boss but then I started exploring. After a while I went back to the beast and killed it right away. Same goes for the second boss, first try.
The third one though seems tough as hell. It's my 3rd try now. Thank god for shortcuts.
Since we're already here: any advice for the third boss?

I expected to hate it since I bought it entirely due to hype.

I am enjoying dying a lot...lol not really.

I'm happy I managed to get through that first area with the bonfire but still dying, lots.

Not bad so far. The biggest adjustment for me hasn't been movement or combat as much as just understanding what the game wants me to do to move forward. The concept of making the world quicker and easier to navigate by opening gates being so key to the experience is a new one on me.

The only big frustration I'm experiencing right now is the time it takes to get back into the first boss fight after I die. I've accepted that death is part of the game, but I'm having trouble accepting that a game in which death is so common can't get me back into the action without half a minute of loading and another half a minute of returning to the place I died.

Still, I'm keen to get back in and try killing that bloody boss, so it hasn't lost me yet.

Yeah, I completely agree with this. Apparently there is a gate you can open near the first boss through a house, that will drastically shorten the time between dying and fighting the first boss. Hopefully that will ease some of the frustration of dying.

I think I've opened the gate, but it still takes a little time to run back up to the boss, even ignoring all the townsfolk along the way. Hopefully the upcoming patch can really whittle those loading screens down, because I can't see myself being willing to put up with the amount of wasted time this game is currently demanding of me long-term.

It takes almost no time at all.

Here's the shortcut I'm talking about and me beating Cleric Beast on third try! WOOT!

It's less than 30 seconds from starting lantern to Cleric Beast fog gate.

Really enjoying it. I missed out on Souls games from my own stupidity, I live in Seoul and after visiting the game market was convinced they were all in Japanese with Korean subtitles, never got round to picking them up on my rare trips back to the UK.

I'm only on the first section tried fighting the cleric beast once and lost, it's difficult but I've since opened up all the shortcuts and upgraded my weapons and armor. Will take on the Cleric Beast again later.

i have DS1 on my PC, i've played maybe 8 hours on it but every time I get super frustrated from stupid shit I do (falling off ledges or buildings, accidentally attacking allies) and alt-f4 and am lost and confused when I try again a few months later and give up quickly.

I'll admit I don't like scary games at all, and I've quit Bloodborne a few times now because it freaked me the fuck out. I'll still play every now and then, but I don't want to have any nightmares so keeping it very chill.

Weird thing is playing stuff like wolf among us or even last of us is no problem at all, but I can't handle stuff like Resident Evil or Evil Within. Bloodborne is right on the edge for me.

The boss was behind the big guy surrounded by birds.

I tried playing Demon Souls and kept dying and couldn't get into it. It was almost the same with blood-borne but I really enjoyed the combat and kept with it, and kind of figured it out, and I really started to enjoy it.

I just tried demon's souls again booted it back up and just figured it;s not for me. I'll give BB a shot when it's cheap since it's somewhat different and faster paced.

Well, yeah:

I guess I didn't see that one. Complaining about a respawn point 28 seconds away from a boss is a new one to me. *shrug

Died a ton on the first werewolf as I had no fucking clue how to equip weapons lol

Since then though I've enjoyed it. Big part is getting into the rhythm of knowing when to dodge back then dodge in for a few hits. Did okay until I ran into a big dude with an axe and was doing fuck all damage while taking a ton.

The key will be playing in bursts to avoid getting frustrated I expect!
