Pillars of Eternity |OT| You must gather your party before venturing forth.

Am I correct in understanding that Perception no longer gives a bonus to accuracy? Does any attribute affect accuracy now?
No. Your starting accuracy is determined solely by class. It goes up every level, but otherwise you need talents, weapons, equipment etc. to boost it.

This turned Perception into kinda a dump stat for most characters.

if I understand it correctly, yes - but there are weapons/abilities/talents that can break engagement so you can move away without suffering a disengagement attack.

Ah okey! Well if there was a similar system in BG2 that would help explain the many deaths I experienced :P. Had no idea.

The reviewer from Gamestar commented on that:

Der größte Kritikpunkt liegt in der Übersetzung. Halt!

So it's all in all ok but with some minor problems.

Their test will be out by tomorrow since he's 70h into the game but hasn't completed it yet. :O

Thanks - English it is then. I'm in for the story and consequences mostly.

Oh and can I switch difficulty modes on the fly?

I think it'll be a rather important stat for conversations and scripted events.
Also, it effects Deflection and Interrupt.
Most ranged, caster and deceptive builds have more important priorities than Deflection, and minmaxers argue that boosting Interrupt is less valuable than just getting your damage and attack speed up.

The conversation and scripted events stuff is a concern, but other attributes (including the physical ones) play into those too. I fully support people making the builds they want to make according to their roleplaying concerns, and the game absolutely does too, but Perception is the worst stat for most classes in pure mechanical/combat terms.

Fuck, reviews are really making me want to pick this up... Is the game a cakewalk on easy? How long does it take to really get the grip of combat?

I don't think so, no. If you haven't played Infinity Engine games before, or are a noob at them (like me!), getting the hang of Real-Time-With-Pause can be a hassle. "Easy" is not a cakewalk but the game forgives some beginner mistakes in terms of micromanagement, tactical positioning and so on. I'd say go for it.

Does the game let you change difficulty at will? I'm thinking about starting on normal to get a feel of it, but would be awesome if I'd be able to change the difficulty if it gets too tough...

Any class can can stealth and pick apart locks and traps as long as you invest into the Stealth and/or Mechanics skills. It's free skill system, ZERO restrictions.

Yes ok, thats cool, but you gimp the skill tree of a character. I would be sad to gimp my monk (i always play monks in these CRPGS), to be able to lockpick. Can i smash open the chests or doors with my fists then? :)

Yep, you can change difficulty on the fly.

I love hard turn based combat - if that is too easy, I'll loose interest rather fast.

Do you guys think I'll manage with the game on hard without any experience in RTwP? If hard doesn't work out, I'll switch back to normal, if possible after starting the game. I like my combat on the demanding site...

Yep, you can change difficulty on the fly.

And there it is - thanks, just two more hours of work, then to the character creator and then a date. Had I known that this game goes live before midnight, I would have handled things differently :P

You can switch from or to: Easy, Medium, Hard.

If you want to pick locks and check for traps *someone* in your party needs to have those skills. It just doesn't matter which class you do it with.

Yup.

Also the game does difficulty settings properly. Difficulty affects enemy composition, not the numbers. So a wolf is a wolf regardless of whether you're on easy or hard.

Path of the Damned mode, does play with the numbers a bit in addition to changing up the fights even more. You can't change it if you pick PoD though.

Mother first. I lost mine 2 years ago and would give up Pillars completely if I could spend just one more day with her.

of course, of course. My father passed a couple years ago, I know precisely what you mean. Just enjoying some prerelease hype humor while stuck at work.

Awesome, thanks for the replies. Definitely good news. Will give it a go on normal then.

Question - I usually tend to spend skill points on "charm" or whatever the equivalent is, so I can persuade/intimidate people. Is there a preferable class for this?

You don't really "gimp the skill tree." You just pick what skills you want. Pumping the mechanics skill of a Monk won't really make for a less effective monk.

Unrelated, I am still trying to narrow down thematically-appropriate, David Bowie-themed song titles for my Chanter phrases. A chant that buffs party speed and debuffs enemy concentration could work for "Let's Dance", and "Moonage Daydream" might be a combo of enemy fear and the buff that gives firey weapons to allies.

There is no skill tree. Trust me when I say it doesn't gimp your character. Don't think of this game having similar mechanics to say a Dragon Age game.

Whats the cheapest place to get this now? Any discounts?

Without traders? Probably GMG. It's in their VIP section, though, so you need an account to view it. IIRC it's like 25% off.

GMG sells the Steam version, so just plop the code into Steam and you can DL it directly, without using GMG's horrible Capsule client.

I'm assuming you have no prior experience with the IE game. Start with normal.

Question: I'm pretty sure that the premade companions have side-quests and character development through the game. If I choose to make my own companions at the tavern, will I miss that content? should I take the premade companions instead?

You could be facing one wolf on easy, 2 wolves on normal, and then 2 wolves + elder wolf on hard. Gets even crazier on Path of the Damned!

Practical question regarding this thread: the use of spoiler tags. Shall we spoiler plot/major sidequests stuff for, let's say, a month until most people have enjoyed most of the content the game offers? More time? Less time? No spoiler tags?

PoE will be a game you can replay, so I wouldn't worry too much... especially with an expansion on the horizon.

Companions have their own dialog and some quests, but depending on how you play using a custom-made character may be more prudent. It all depends on your strategic needs.

Oh, I forgot, but Kickstarter backers or something like that can get $20 copies. Dunno how much longer that avenue is open, however.

You will miss that content!

Up to you if like the companions or not. If you don't like any of them, replace with your own made up adventurer.

Absolutely use spoilers for plot/character stuff. I don't think you need to for mechanical/gameplay things though.

In a game that's going to take vastly varying amounts of time for people to beat, I think spoiler tagging everything is only fair.

I think I'll go for phrases from Bowie lyrics instead of song names personnally.

Will I be able to upgrade to the royal edition after launch? I could only swing the regular pre-order edition but if this turns out to be incredible (like reviews and past obsidian games seem to allude to) then I would definitely like to back it more. Also whatever their next kick-starter is may be the first time I even back something.

My most anticipated release of the last couple of years is finally here. It will be reeeeeally difficult to take time away from Bloodborne, but that's just how excited I am for this game. I am so prepared to get my CRPG on!

Pillars keeps micro-updating.

Preloaded and ready to go. Any tips for a RPG veteran, but Infinity games noob? Also, anyone got a link to some custom portraits?

I could use some help, I was thinking about making a druid.
But only if he can be on like the front line (battlemage), and not be a support character.
Is that possible and how would I set up his skills?
