Can someone explain chalice dungeons to me?

I've beaten 5 bosses so far and got the shortcut to the sixth, and I haven't tried making them yet.

1. Are they completely side content, or do you want to do them during the main game?

2. Does it matter which tomb you do the ritual at? Are there differences?

3. Does the level scale with you? Is it based on using different chalices/ingredients?

4. Can you get good items/weapons/armor in them?

I'm not sure about 2 and 3 but...

They are totally optional content, but at the end of each level is a unique boss that isn't a part of the story content. The last boss of the chalice dungeons is actually the only boss that you get a gold trophy for defeating. After looking at the wiki there appears to be weapons you can only find there, as well as more powerful versions of weapons from the main game.

I'm the exact opposite, use it on a lot of regular enemies and used it on all 3 bosses I've defeated so far.

Is there a good write up on the benefits of stacking skill vs stacking strength vs balancing them both?

I think quality builds are OP easy mode from what i've seen. Ludwig's holy blade has B scaling in dex and str after upgrades. I'm pretty sure the saw spear does as well.

Having a password is for matching up with friends/people you know.

If you don't mind matching with randoms then just remove it.

Cool, definitely speaks to the game's quality when you can use such varied approaches to combat. Glad all that time I spent mastering those huge axes and clubs in the previous souls games still applies here.

Passwords should be used if there is someone specifically you want to play with. I had no problems when I played with someone with a custom password. No luck using GAF password yet. Otherwise just don't use a password. Coonnections should happen a lot more frequently. That's just my experience with it.

Guys I just killed the pig and I think im before father g guy. I found the back way to that elevator that was blocked before. Does that now mean I can use that short cut permanently now or only from the back side with that step switch?

I was thinking of going forward but have zero Molotovs and a decent amount of souls on me...

It's a permanent shortcut. Go back to the Dream, use your echoes. Buy molotovs if you've got money afterward. Show Father G what's what.

I really don't think the item helps that much anyway. It sometimes just didn't work even when it was the first time I was using it, and it was near the end of the fight. It's easier to just parry him at the end.
