Mario Party 10 |OT| - "We're just having four much fun!"

Absolutely. Attempting to undermined an handwave an entire groups' of people's opinions away by dismissing it as "nostalgia" is something that pops up all too frequently, and is always just as baseless and annoying

Handwaving away 15 years worth of games because they aren't the first and second in the series is baseless and annoying.

How long do you want to do this for?

Yeah, I really enjoyed amiibo Party. I'm holding out until I get Toad at least to play more, to avoid erasing the Smash data. Want to save the tokens, though it's cool you don't need to.

Everyone hold up. We just played Amiibo Party as a group and it is GREAT FUN! Wow what a great little mode.

Definitely. At first it's alright but if you're playing with people that have amiibos and have unlocked a couple of tokens, it can get pretty crazy as the tokens are OP as shit.

Soo.. it seems like people are starting to warm up to MP10? Earlier I asked if MP9 was a better buy, but the Bowser mode with the gamepad is sounding pretty fun. Posts dumping on this game seem further and further in-between. Close to pulling the trigger.

I'm so bummed. I blind bought this game yesterday and I cant even play the main mode because I dont have 2 wiimotes. Playing as Bowser was fun with the gamepad, so I dont understand why I can't use it in the regular mode. And apparently my 2 pro controllers are worthless too.

I am enjoying 10 much more than I was expecting. I would say it is better than 9 in that there is no lava gimmick board. The middle board is BS luck though.

Two more random observations, after your first Mario Party run through the board (or all the boards?) the bosses are random on each board, and the losing player can choose the final boss. That's kind of nice for variety.

Along with that, I played a Mario Party match where Bowser didn't get free from the Gamepad by the 'Homestretch', and he gets 'locked up forever', so instead of Bowser Spaces being placed, Bowser Jr. spaces get placed instead. Not something you'd probably see often.

Man, people complain about finding local players for Mario Party, but I'm going to have a tough time ever finding anybody with Amiibos for this mode. It would make it more exciting, I'm sure.

Bowser mode is pretty good for sure, I've only played a few games of MP9 but I think the 'Mario Party' mode is just a bit more interesting in that one due to some subtle mechanic removals. I think you'd be good to go with either one really, but yeah, I've only played a few games of MP9.

The big improvements to me is that MP10 moves and behaves much much snappier than MP9. CPU players moves faster, characters moves faster, dices rolls faster, etc in MP10. And the end game is much more balanced in MP10, so a player now can't get 17 bazillion bonus stars just for being last.

And MP10 has a mini-game-only mode, where you play a tournament of mini games (without a board), while MP9 only had the free-for-all mode IIRC.

There are many other small improvements as well compared to MP9, and the only thing I miss from MP9 is that MP9 feels like it had a larger range of mini games (since they weren't divided into so many categories as they are in MP10).

Not that I give a shit about Metacritic, but I was curiously looking over some other Nintendo-related party games by Nintendo or otherwise.

Wii Party - 68
Wii Party U - 65
Fortune Street - 68
Mario Party 6 - 71

I've had so much fun with these games. They're all at least 8/10 experiences to me.

So, yeah, opinions. If you like casual party experiences then Mario Party 10 probably falls in line. I haven't played it myself but I'm looking forward to it because I already know that I'm totally fine with some turn-off-your-brain fun. I don't like my movies that way, but my casual gaming experiences? Sure. Especially if we're all getting high and drunk.

I do want to eventually see more ambitious titles like Nintendo Land, though.

Fortune Street 68, really? Dokapon Kingdom is also just 73. I assume Metacritic just hates party games.

lots of people find fortune street exceptionally boring so i'm not surprised by its score at all

on the other hand i think it rules so i'll just remain satisfied in my ability to enjoy it. now that the online is down gimme a sequel dammit.

Quick question; does each player need a remote to play this game? I just realised that my wife and I probably can't play this together with just one remote but thought I'd ask here first before buying a new one; it isn't clear from the back of the box.

You should be able to play Bowser Party with the Gamepad and 1 remote (one player plays as Bowser, the other as a Mario character), but the other modes would need more remotes.

wait the game REQUIRES wiimotes? guess i'm not getting it then. i just refuse to use wiimotes with my wii u, i don't even have the sensor bar hooked up. i think they're messy and annoying. Gamepad / pro controllers all the way. Are there any other Wii U games that require the wiimotes so that I can make sure to avoid those too?

kind of a shame too, even with the negative reviews I was considering this. but why the hell would the make it REQUIRE last gen tech?

The Fortune Street reviews were so off base. Such a shame because it's nothing like Mario Party/Wii Party. It's not a party game in the traditional sense or genre. At all. It's badass is what it is.

The Wii U is like an extension of the Wii.

If you think about it, requiring expensive Pro Controllers would be pretty bad since they're $50 a pop at retail price, and adding even more NEW cheaper option controllers (while there are still plenty of Wiimotes and Wii Classic Controller Pros in the wild, either official or knockoff) wouldn't help the clutter at all.

By offering legacy support and basically branding Wiimotes as Wii U controllers, Nintendo are providing a really easy and familiar option for multiplayer games.

You can find Wiimotes for pretty cheap if you're willing to go used or refurbished.

EDIT: ALL OF THIS SAID, perhaps it's a problem by design. Making the Pro Controller non-motion and making Mario Party 10 have motion minigames was probably a conflict of philosophy in the first place. They probably couldn't decide whether it was worth it to keep the game truly accessible to those who played Mario Party 8 and/or 9, or to design the game to be purely traditional back to the GCN days.

Thus, I understand why blocking Pro Controller support is frustrating. I should have read your post better. Sorry!

And this isn't the first time that a Nintendo game didn't offer the ability to use traditional controllers in place of motion-based ones. Perhaps it's something they need to work on. I love how they offer all the options but they could go even further with the idea of supporting everything all the time.

i don't mind it supporting Wiimotes, what I don't like is it not supporting Pro Controllers. I should have been more clear.

Are there any other (good) mario party games on virtual console that can be played on Wii U?

edit - further explanation on my pro controller/gamepad frustration, i already have a gamepad (obv) and a Pro controller. Currently, I have zero way to actually play Mario Party 10. I'd have to buy 2 wiimotes just to get back to the point I'm at now, and 4 wiimotes to have a full game.

My favorite Amiibo Party moment thus far was a star cannon shooting stars all over the board and then me using my token to roll 5 dice to pick up 5 stars in one turn.

You can play Bowser Party single player and the Jewel Drop mini-game with the gamepad only.

Then either buy cheap Wii Remotes or tell friends to bring one over if you have friends want to play with friends.

:p

Having a complete amiibo collection totally breaks the point system. Even on a bad day I can get enough to unlock at least two things...should be done by the end of the week.

Is this the first Mario Party to allow you to make the player count lower than 4? 1 v 1 Mario Party is supremely fucked, but it's kind of entertaining haha. And 3 player's actually balanced pretty well. Fun not having to deal with a CPU.

I've been working my way through the challenges/achievements in the game and i'm stumped by one of them. You have to roll 7 dice while playing as Bowser but every time i've played as him i'm stuck with just 4.

Is there a standard way to get more dice or is it just a case of luck?

I think MP9 and possibly Island Tour allowed it - the 4 player minigames all scale down to 2 player in Island Tour at least from my memory.

There's just the red '+1 dice block' spaces that Team Mario can land on, and sometimes Bowser Jr. randomly or by his space gives you an extra diceblock at other times. I've seen up to 6, seems like you'd need really good luck to get 7.

Bah. I was afraid it would just come down to luck. :( I seen a post on Miiverse where some guy had got eight!

I thought you don't need a sensor bar because the GamePad can act as a sensor. Am I misremembering?

How would you have a 4-5 player game without Wii Remotes? The Wii Remote is the primary controller for the Wii U (besides the pad). Most people don't own multiple pro controllers, and the pro controller isn't required or needed at all, so I wouldn't be surprised if most people don't even have one.

I don't understand why you refuse to use "last gen tech" when... it's actually pro-consumer and really great that it uses these controllers most people had anyway.

I love this game. I always play with at least another player (which are my sons and/or wife) so I'm never bored with AI opponents.

I find it sad that it emphazises so much on Bowser's mini-games and having only 10 of them, that's really not enough.

Other than that, there seem to be "enough" content to please me but I'd be open for patches or DLC that would expend on minigames or theme boards.

There are lots of minigames they could bring from previous M'ario Partys to this one...

Glad to hear this. I have all of the MP games. My favorites are 6 & 7. I couldn't get into 8 and I don't think I played 9 much. I ordered the MP10 Amibo bundle which should arrive on Friday from Amazon.

Fortune Street 68, really? Dokapon Kingdom is also just 73. I assume Metacritic just hates party games.

I couldn't get into Fortune Street at all. Didn't appeal to me. What did you like best about the game?

For the full experience, do I need an Amiibo for each player? I would like to avoid buying them if possible but I would like the full experience.

Bah. I was afraid it would just come down to luck. :( I seen a post on Miiverse where some guy had got eight!

You could theoretically get Team Mario to cooperate with you on landing on useful spaces if you were desperate for it, but I think letting the challenge come naturally isn't a big deal because honestly past secret characters and stuff the rewards for Mario Party Points aren't massively interesting.

Apparently having non-Mario Amiibos also breaks the point system according to someone here? So there's that.

For the full experience, do I need an Amiibo for each player? I would like to avoid buying them if possible but I would like the full experience.

Yeah, if you want the 'full experience' for the amiibo party mode, you'd need 4 amiibos. Non-amiibo players can't use "Tokens", which appear on the boards regularly and function kind of like items.

You also only start with one board unlocked with one amiibo, and to get more and mix-&-match them you need to play amiibo party and collect special board Tokens randomly during gameplay. Not sure if you can mix up the board with multiple amiibos or just play the complete version of each board for each. The boards are just squares with minor variations though, so not having all the boards isn't as bad as it sounds.

You only need amiibos for the amiibo party mode which is fun, but definitely a third-tier focus compared to the Bowser Party and Mario Party modes.

Is it true Spike has an advantage in certain games because he has the smallest hit-box? I read that and wanted to know if that was true...

I also ask because I assumed most Mario Party games were designed around all the characters being more or less equal, but now that I think about it it seems like there'd be unfair advantages or disadvantages due to how some of the characters in the newer games aren't as standardized as how it was original with Mario, Luigi, Wario, Peach, Yoshi, and Donkey Kong all being basically the same size. I was playing a game in Island Tour as Toad, the one where you have to catch the falling meteors, and he was noticeably shorter than everyone else which seemed to put me at a disadvantage...other characters could reach the meteors first by standing next to me! This was the first time I've noticed an unfair situation in Mario Party based on character choice.

Can anyone who owns the game tell me if it's good for 2 players only? It's just me and my lady, no one else. Does the game punish you for not having more players (ala Wii Party U)?

waluigi is the top tier mario party character because he has the least space between his head and the dice block

i can't say i've experimented a real lot but i would imagine the hitboxes are normalized

I win probably 75-80% of all the Mario Party games I've ever played in my life, I've played every installment, and I play Wario whenever I can. So I don't think hitboxing is an issue, or I'm just that good

My wife and I play all the time -- just us two. Always fun and I definitely don't feel like we are being punished. I can only speak on the Mario Party mode though, we tried the Bowser mode and we both can't stand it.

You can adjust the amount of humans/CPU's in all modes if you want so you can party with just 3 people if you want. The more the merrier with these games though since there's less outrage when the CPUs dominate through sheer luck but I've played single-player just fine and it's still plenty fun... when you win.

On a sidenote, I think my luck peaked. I somehow won against 3 Very Hard CPUs after a string of 3rd and 4th place finishes with 119 stars (no lost stars either) in Chaos Castle of all places. How DA FUCK AM I SO GOOD?

Earlier I asked if MP9 was a better buy, but the Bowser mode with the gamepad is sounding pretty fun.

Mario Party 10 has one-third of its content locked behind a paywall.

Mario Party 9 is 100% accessable from the disc with just the initial purchase.

Mario Party 10 has five boards.

Mario Party 9 has seven boards.

Mario Party 10 has Rosalina, DK, Spike, and Toadette as exclusive characters.

Mario Party 9 has Birdo, Koopa, Shy Guy, and Magikoopa as exclusive characters.

Mario Party 10 is only playable on Wii-U.

Mario Party 9 is playable on Wii AND Wii-U.

Unless you're a collector, this is more of an either or situation. Bowser Party alone is not worth $50/$60.

My preorder finally arrived tonight, played the 3 Bowser mode boards and the remaining 2 party mode boards, plus some of the extras. I'm already liking it way more than Mario Party 9.

My main gripe with Mario Parties is all the waiting and unnecessary stuff that happens during the board games. It seems in this one my prayers have finally been answered after 12 Mario Parties. Now everyone just selects their dice and presses A, moves quickly with no fuss, turn switching and minigame loading is super fast, vastly reduced dialogue/explanations, and most importantly, all the special events and things are much faster than what they used to be. Bowser/Bowser Jr spaces can take around 15-20 seconds I think (I forgot to count them) but literally all the other lucky/unlucky and event spaces took less than 10 seconds. Plus you can skip any unnecessary animations! The only exception was the Bowser graffiti thing in Bowser Party but I can forgive that because it's a pretty neat concept.

I'm already liking the minigames better than 9, too. So yeah, I'm definitely not disappointed with this, and I don't have/am not planning on getting any Amiibos too, but missing that mode doesn't really bother me.

I am going to buy this game tomorrow digitally for $20. No need to raise eyebrows, though - this is a special offer for Russia and CIS countries, it ends on 31 March, and it works only with official Russian eShop code store.

My little brother loved Mario Party 9 so much he saved his own pocket money for Mario Party 10. I do not usually buy digital versions of games I do not own physically, but, well, it's his purchase. I will probably buy the game later when the inflated currency drops a bit.

So, my question is - does this game worth this price if I am not planning on buying Mario amiibo in the next month or so? I see a lot of controversial opinions about it... Oh, and I have all major party games for Wii U - Nintendo Land, Wii Party U, Game & Wario, Rabbids Land, - so some kind of comparison would be nice.

Hey guys please yeah my Miiverse posts to get Nintendo's attention.

https://miiverse.nintendo.net/posts/AYQHAAABAACNUKFB2pKhFg

Amiibo Party is a fantastic mode and only two things are needed to make it one of the best ever. Firstly, allow us to use the remote to roll the dice and trigger special events. Secondly, add a random option for picking which board to play, making it a random 4 pieces out of the tokens you've obtained.

https://miiverse.nintendo.net/posts/AYQHAAABAACNUKFB2w1hpQ

While badminton is great fun, having to play to 21 every time can feel tedious. Giving us the option to play to 11 would be perfect and make this mode much more replayable!

This game is amazing and yes I am a Mario Party veteran and absolutely love classic Mario Party. However, MP10 suffers from that weird plastic feel a few Nintendo games have suffered of late where they feel quality and polished but.. lacking in content. MK8 was the prime example before the major update, and MK7 and Mario Tennis on the 3DS.
