Mario Party 10 |OT| - "We're just having four much fun!"

Played the crap out of this last night with 3 other friends. Didn't even touch the Bowser mode and we had a blast playing through all the gameboards.

I still don't know how much I personally like the car stuff, but it's undeniably great for people that don't play games much, especially if they're drinking. My roomate, who I've never seen play a video game more than 30 minutes in my life, played this with us for about 4 hpurs last night.

Glad I bought it. No matter it's weaknesses, it's a hell of a lot of fun with a group. Even more so if that group aren't the biggest gamers.

Do you know what's even more ridiculous? Dismissing complaints as being "ridiculous" because you don't agree with them. I've played every game in the series extensively since 1999, and I can say for certain that Mario Party 10 is one of the weaker iterations, if not the weakest. However, Island Tour is so bad that I can't even remember the names of the boards, so that gets the nod from me. All of the flaws could be overlooked if this game actually had online play. Imagine being able to play with other GAF members.

Seems pretty ridiculous to me that online play somehow absolves all the other problems? What kind of argument is that?

I disagree that this or Island Tour is a bad game, and you should realize that not everyone agrees with you. You come off strongly with the air of speaking on authority ("I've played every game in the series extensively since 1999, so I know better than you!" is the implication I get), and that seems ridiculous to me too. Doesn't really matter if there's a sizeable group who find it fun and not ugly, as you can see with half the thread.

Still would be down for a non-Amiibo DLC pack of mini games/boards, and also a traditional non-car full on Mario Party release this generation, for variety's sake.

Don't hate the game have some annoyances though. Played maybe 6 rounds of Mario Party mode with 2 other people and 1 CPU each time. At the end of each round comes the awards ceremony... where the CPU has won 11 of the 12 awards (2 each round, I won one once) so they win everytime (I won the once when I won an award). Doesn't matter seem to matter if they are set to easy or not, the extra bonus 40 mini stars seals the win for them.

Also as other have said Bowser mode is a bit silly. Don't think there has been one time Bowser has not caught up to the vehicle (even when playing as Bowser) on a roll out of maybe 6 games...some were very short games :-P. When each team has four dice, you'd think this would be impossible.

A few thoughts...

Mario Party mode is really fun. I'm enjoying it more than 9 for some reason. Maybe we are giving it more of a chance now that the vehicle is back for a second time. Will be interesting to go back to 9 in a few times and give it another shot. We've done two boards and everyone had great fun. The mini games are also very very good.

Amiibo mode is great fun too! The problem is it feels tedious to have to use the game pad every turn but that's because the game for some reason let's you use the remotes for some actions but not all. Once you realise that when the mini game is over you are supposed to put your remote down and *everything* can be done on the gamepad it makes much more sense! You then grab your remote when the mini game starts.

Badminton is no beach volleyball or ice hockey but it can get very tense with 4 humans. I found it upsetting that there is no 2 v 2 option with each player paired with a computer. I understand that this is because there is a 1 v 1 option but I still would have liked it there. Fair enough we never use it for Mario Tennis but we always did for beach volleyball and ice hockey in party 5 so it feels missing here.

The puzzle game is very unique and quite fun.

Haven't tried Bowser Party yet.

Wonder if Nintendo will re-release Mario Party-e on Wii U (or better 3DS)? It's technically a GBA game so I don't see why it couldn't be part of the GBA VC on Wii U.

granted, it's not like everything indieszero does is a winner, but making some gba minigames sounds like something they're pretty well-suited to

doesn't seem like there was much of a budget for the visuals, though...

d-daisy...?

Wow, just noticed they have Mario Party Advance on the Wii U ESHOP.

When did that happen? I never saw any thread about it being released or fanfare.

Online play wouldn't make the flaws go away, but they would become more tolerable. The easier it is to find other people to play with, the more enjoyable Mario Party becomes.

I don't care if you find it fun. In fact, I'm glad you do. My exposure to the series doesn't make my opinion more valid, but I think it's worth mentioning; I'm sure many people here would appreciate insight from somebody who has played every game in the series. I think you're the one here who has problems tolerating dissenting opinions, otherwise you wouldn't be damage controlling every time somebody criticizes the game. By all means, continue enjoying it. I'm not here to rain on your parade. But I am here to offer some meaningful feedback, both positive and negative.

For starters, I think Mario Party 10 has great mini-games. However, their presence feels trivialized by how luck based the boards are. And worst of all, the mini star distribution isn't wide enough. Players shouldn't be rewarded for placing 2nd/3rd in a mini-game.

I've had a pretty bad Mario Party itch lately so maybe I'll pick this up! Hopefully it doesn't suck but nothing can be worse than 8. Ballyhoo was unreasonably frustrating

This has to be one of the most reductive and annoying counters to an opinion.

I've played Mario Party 1 and 2 as recently as this past year--still a ton of fun. Perfect? No. But fun? In spades.

"Reductive and annoying"? This guy wrote off 15 years and 11 games of Mario Party and I'm the one being reductive?

I didn't tell you that you aren't allowed to have fun playing Mario Party 2 -- I played it on the Wii Virtual Console a few years back and it was a good time -- but I think the series has gone to new and better places since.

Frankly I find your meta-thread complaining reductive, and don't even get me started about annoying.

Finally tried Amiibo Party (still by myself) and the JewelDrop mini-game.

Amiibo Party was better than expected. Feels like a more traditional and simple board game (and more simple than ealier MP entries). Roll the dice, go around, earn coins, trade said coins for stars. Back to been a race at who arrives to the stars with enough coins first.

Jewel Drop was quite great too. Could have been a separate download/purchase even. Great extra.

Two interesting things about Amiibo Party I found because I can't help but grind it out for the board tokens, the Bowser Jr. minigames are actually used on the Bowser Board (not sure if used anywhere else?) and there seems to be a 'Normal Board' that I guess you can only get from tokens, not an Amiibo? Not sure why it exists really.

Hmm, I just get worked up because the majority of people who hate on the game can barely articulate why, except for broad unexplained things like that they hate the car gameplay, that just comes off as a nostalgia-argument when not articulated. You at least put up some valid points, I just get sick of some of the unjustified hate that claims to speak for "every Mario Party fan". I'm reading too much internet forums, probably.

Okay, the bowser mode is pretty damn fun.

The party won our first game with just me making it to the end with only 1 star.

Yo party-goers, quick question: if I lend some amiibos to a friend, can he unlock the amiibo related stuff and play it without actually owning the figures? He'd like to play the amiibo mode but he doesn't feel like buying them and I want my amiibos back of course ^^ does he need the amiibos every time he wants to play? sorry if people already asked...

Don't quote me on this, but I think you only need an Amiibo to unlock the mode and to store tokens. If you don't have any you play as a cardboard figures, but then you have the downside of not being able to swap board parts on your future playthroughs.

You're right on that part, I need to know if they need amiibos every time they wanna play the amiibo board or if it's a "unlock once and you're done" kinda thing. ;)

Wait misread your post, so you play as cardboard figures if you don't have amiibos at all? You just need one to unlock the table the first time?

Nice. Mario Party DS is a very underrated game. Good boards and very fun minigames. Only needing one cart was also genius. Haven't played much of the 3DS game, but I believe it is one cart only as well.

We played the new Mario Party this weekend, just the Amiibo party, and had a lot of fun. Its easily the best looking Mario Party game to date.

Yeah, you need 1 amiibo to open the mode each time you boot up the game. Cardboard cut-outs fill in CPUs and other players, but there always needs to be at least 1 amiibo to play.

If he uses your amiibo, you can get tokens, which are like items that are saved to your amiibo for future use (you can choose to start with a token at the beginning of a game), and that includes 'board tokens', which let you customize the boards - but then yeah, it's saved to the amiibo, not the game, so he'd just be doing you a favour.

Can you play 4-5 player modes with 4 Pro Controllers, or do you need 4 Wiimotes + the Gamepad?

No, many minigames use pointer and motion controls.

MPDS is overlooked a lot. Which is weird because the game is the closest thing we've had in a decade to really feeling like Mario Party 1-3. The boards remind me a lot of the N64 style boards, as they're kind of small and only have one or two little gimmicks here and there. I had a lot of fun with MPDS, I'd put it even as one of the top Mario Parties (although MP3 will still be at the top).

Wiimotes mostly because only 50% of the games do not use Motion Controls.
No clue why Pro Controller doesn't work with Bowser Mode. All of the games are just choose this or run away.

Thanks, I'm out then. I just have 2 Wiimotes left at this point.

Absolutely. Attempting to undermined an handwave an entire groups' of people's opinions away by dismissing it as "nostalgia" is something that pops up all too frequently, and is always just as baseless and annoying

I want to organise a 4 player Mario Party tornament where we play one board from each Mario Party back to back. Of course for this we will need the whole day. Whoever comes first gets 5 points, second gets 2 third gets 1 and 4th gets 0.

The first game and board is random. Whoever comes 4th gets to choose the next Mario Party and the board. For Mario Party 10 you have the option to pick either an Amiibo board or a Mario Party board.

One day I will have the time for this...

Much more fun than Wii U Party easily. I would give it a 3/5 in terms of Mario Party games. Also yeah people have rose-tinted glasses with the original Mario Party. It is easily in the lower end.
But Wii Party U has Spot the Sneak.

Does Mario Party 10 have Spot the Sneak?

Yeah, I really want to pull something like that off too, not sure how I'll find the time though. I did pull off a 6-game run awhile back, takes about an hour per game.

Played with another group of people last night and once again is was a huge hit. I dunno what exactly it is, but everything about the set up of this game really hits home with a group of friends more I've seen any Mario Party in a while, even 8.

Also played more Bowser party last night, and it indeed might not be as unbalanced as I intitially thought. Both Bowser games we played Bowser lost. I mean both times it did come down with just me alive with like 1 heart barely, but we still did it.

You can get some pretty fantastic moments, in one game I pulled off a clutch revival of my entire team at the halfway point after we were getting literally thrown into Bowser by negative spaces, and then after that upswing we were mercilessly cut down by half twice by Bowser Jr. and all 4 of us annihilated in a Bowser game 2 spaces to the end.

Having your survival ride on one or two members of the team leads to some pretty great moments!

Mario Party 10 seems almost designed for DLC. The board selection "ruler" at the bottom can fit 5 or even 6 more boards without the need to change any game layout, just as the original MK8 layout had room for 4 additional cup icons.

had a lot of fun playing the regular mario party mode with three other friends over the weekend. i really appreciated how snappy and streamlined the mode feels; there was relatively very little opportunity to twiddle one's thumbs. i also feel like there are no mini-games that are outright duds. personally favorite so far is soccer brawl. only negative thusfar is the mini- and end-boss battles are already getting stale.

I'd just be surprised to see DLC considering how the Amiibos already make it feel like they're price-gouging. I would welcome more boards though, even if I don't think it would be very fair.
