Halo 5 Guardians: #huntthetruth

Well, that's not exactly true. There are other IIs who are/were better, smarter, faster, stronger, etc. But John is the natural leader, and he's lucky.

Its true there were Spartans better than Chief in certain areas.

But as a whole when you combine both his physical and mental abilities he is the greatest UNSC soldier ever hands down. Chief, as Locke said, is THE Spartan. Especially at this point in the timeline. He has become a living legend to the people of that Universe.

So going by those teasers last night, what does everyone think about them possibly making it to where at one point you can play the same mission as both of them. I know people would probably hate that as I don't know how you bring it back around if you kill Chief.

Thinking too much into it. They won't stray away from a linear story. The teasers are just showing how there are two sides to every story. Chief is viewed as a betrayer in Locke's eyes and Locke is the one down in Chief's. I imagine this will play out like Halo 2's campaign where we switch between both of them throughout the campaign and then they end up crossing paths at one point.

I'd say it's mostly because of his battle experience than his physical/mental abilities combined. He's been involved in a lot of battles and has been in the spotlight during a lot of events. He's always emerged victorious due to a combination of luck and will (which now we know to be his geas).

I mean, Kelly/Linda/Fred surpass the Chief in physical and mental abilities (Speed, Accuracy, Leadership). Yes, the chief may be a more "balanced" soldier overall, but in the end it's always luck and sheer will that get him through so much (Cortana probably counting as "luck").

Yeah, I don't think they'll do that. That's been very criticized in games that have done it in the past and I don't see 343i going down that road. I would personally hate it.

edit: sorry, I misread your post, I thought you meant the entire game. One single mission from two points of view? Could be fun if it's not too long and if it's actually two very different points of view (not just the same mission/level). I still wouldn't want it to happen.

Am I the only one who think that Chief
is searching for the Forerunners to save Cortana? We know they experimented a ton with expanding life through digital means so they have a ton of knowledge on it. We hear Diadect at the end of Halo 4 talk about how the Forerunners are coming. What if Chiefs quest he finds them and somehow unleashes war with them, thus why Locke views him as a traitor?

While this is all true, no Spartan has ever come within lightyears of the accomplishments of John. His actions speak for themselves, he is the greatest Spartan thats ever lived.

this..he might not necessary be the most skilled...but in terms of feats and accomplishments and achievement...Chief is the greatest Spartan of all time and the greatest UNSC soldier of all time...

as mentioned before Locke said Chief was The Spartan...

I am not debating that, I agree, 100 percent. I just think it's not because of a combination of mental/physical prowess but rather because of will and luck.

There's a book, I think it's either First Strike or Fall of Reach, where Halsey tells John something to the effect of how he always goes against the odds and tries to salvage even the worst scenario to make a win out of it. That's just what I mean. He is the greatest Spartan/Soldier to ever live. The why and how is the only thing that's up for debate I think.

I hope we don't have to play as locke for more than a 1/3 of the game

I thought he was supposed to be getting slightly more playtime as him?

Locke in Halo 5 is also going to be testing the waters as the new protagonist whenever they want to take out the Chief.

Please let me know if I'm wrong, anybody.

Ah yeah I see what your saying and agree. You're probably right his will to succeed, see things through is probably his greatest strength. We see him go against all odds many times in the Halo campaigns, even scenarios that would probably make even the best Spartans flinch.

2/3s and you will like it, mister!

I dig Locke on a surface level, so I'm alright regardless.

It could be really interesting playing as Locke.

:(

I will patiently wait and reserve judgement

Now I want to re-read the Nylund trilogy.

Are there other books like those? I read the Forerunner trilogy and I didn't like it as much (though it was somewhat still enjoyable). I want more military sci-fi lingo, less metaphysical forerunner hippie loving.

I hated Contact: Harvest.

You, sir, are an anomaly.

Hmm, well steer clear of Broken Circle unless you're all about the Covenant. Kilo-Five is polarizing but it's human focused. And New Blood is digital only, but really good (and is about Buck from ODST).

Ohhh... New Blood sounds interesting.

I have no problem with the Covenant as long as it's well written; I loved the Covenant parts of Nylund's First Strike and Ghosts of Onyx, hated those in Contact: Harvest.

I'll look into New Blood and Broken Circle. Thanks!

Woah woah woah, why did you hate Contact Harvest?

Don't take it personal (unless you're Staten, heh), but I found the writing to be very amateurish. I only read it once so there's a lot of stuff I don't remember anymore, but the sex scene felt so out of place. Then there was the Covenant stuff in there, the Brutes just felt forced (no pun intended) and the depiction of the Prophets and how they came to power also felt like the typical "ok, we know we need three guys to be the prophets, let's just come up with three guys and make it all fit".

I remember liking the AIs presented in it (and also Mendicant Bias), plus I remember feeling sad about the Unggoy/Huragok's friendship (i.e. I felt empathy for them); I mean, the book is not worthless or anything like that, it's just that I came from reading Fall of Reach/First Strike and then this kind of killed my hype (was Onyx before or after Harvest?).

Onyx would actually make one killer fucking Halo movie, I think. I always got that impression from it.

Ghosts of Onyx was released before Harvest, but chronologically, Ghosts of Onyx come later.

Harvest was before everything but the forerunner trilogy.

Oh, yeah, I know about chronological order (Contact Harvest, Fall of Reach, The Flood, First Strike, Ghosts of Onyx - will all the time anomalies and some in-between chapters). I just wasn't certain about release order for those two.
Harvest was before everything but the forerunner trilogy.
Right, I should have worded that better. I was wondering about release order.

I think all three Nylund books would make for a killer trilogy, but Onyx ends in one hell of a cliffhanger, heh.

i found out something really interesting

in the trailer locke throws his rifle to the ground in the mud, while Chief holsters his rifle..

i think it shows that Chief is still a much more disciplined soldier than Locke?

what do you guys think

so is there like a summary of what's happened for this ad campaign so far

Frankie and a few others used the hashtag #HUNTtheTruth on Twitter, and had a url leading to huntthetruth.tumblr.com. The page had a countdown leading to 6 PM Pacific time, when the website fully became available. The website had the bullet teaser (complete with the ability to slow down the bullet to read the words on it), and the first episode (Episode 00: PRIMER). Saturday had another countdown, which lead to the next audio chapter, while the Walking Dead finale aired the Locke trailer during the first commercial break, and the Master Chief trailer during the final commercial break. Both were available online roughly when the commercials aired on tv.

That's about it.

Well, Locke was never really a soldier in the traditional sense. Read his Waypoint entry (it's what Nightfall should have been about). When he finally was recruited by ONI, he basically did smaller headhunter kind of missions. If anything, Chief is the classical soldier with the training and respect for chain of command, and Locke is more of a bounty hunter on ONI's payroll. Albeit one that has a longstanding distrust for the UNSC in general.

I think Halo is a cool guy and doesn't afraid of anything.

Locke nub gb2cod.

You have to remember that Chief is practically "programmed" to be a perfect soldier. He's been drilled to be a war machine since he was six. He probably lives by the "this is my rifle" motto.

Also what GringoSuave said.

Also what rokkerkory said.

Locke probably wears Master Chief pajamas.

MC is the spartan Locke wishes he could be

I think Locke is a douche

Well that escalated quickly.

Seriously though, I remember looking forward to Locke when they first unveiled him. Then I watched a couple of Nightfall episodes. He's just... I don't even know. He doesn't feel like a hero or an antihero so far, he's just like a regular guy doing a job. I wish they would flesh out his personality a bit more.

The Locke hate is real....

Honestly, he has the potential to be a really awesome character, and Halo is in need of some awesome characters.

Unless you want another Palmer spin off tablet game :p

Like I said, had we gotten a minseries about his time freelancing before ONI gave him an offer to join, I think people would be more open to him. Nightfall was a dud, and I think the scenes where he was barely holding it together were far more interesting than when he was playing leader. Nightfall wasn't the best first taste of Locke. I know the character can be better, and I know Colter can perform more memorably (he's the bomb on The Good Wife).

I'm more concerned why the planet is scorched and the infinity is in flames. Perhaps this is the end of chief's escape after being captured by ONI/UNSC?

Would also make sense if initially chief is talking to himself. Basically saying he sacrificed all of this for a race/army that betrays him.

Halo already has had some great characters. Most have been KIA though, and only a few remain, unless you mean games only. In which case I agree. We have the Chief, the Arbiter, Halsey (which wasn't part of the games until reach/H4), and Lasky, I guess?

Is that in a novel, or was just released as bio/promotional material?

I really, really doubt H5 will have the chief openly killing ONI/UNSC soldiers, though I'm always open to surprises, and I would love 343i to take the franchise in a bold direction if they're able to deliver (like Foe Hammer!).

I guess the devastation could be the aftermath of something the Chief fails to prevent (precisely because he's being chased) or something he causes indirectly (leading Forerunners/Rogue Covenant to human worlds).

Come on folks. Give Locke a chance.

I remember being confused and miffed by having to play as The Arbiter in Halo 2, but now he's one of my favorite characters in the series, and IS one of the best in the series. So I'll give Locke his fair shake.

so the UNSC and the public see Chief as their messiah their savior.....

does Chief by into that or not? it would be interesting to see what he thinks of his legacy of pretty much being the greatest human soldier of all time

If the ending of Halo 4 is any indication: he don't give a damn. He's just doing his job, and really, it should be that was considering he was made to be such.
