Guess I need to boost my levels, because I just hit a difficulty spike...

I beat (Forbidden Forest boss)
The Shadow of Yharman
and warped back to Hunters's Dream. Decided to try the
Lecture Hall and was teleported to some crazy bizarre place filled with strange headstones everywhere, toxic rivers, with nasty white worm creatures, freaky versions of lycan that can blow fire, and what reminded me of an arachnid version of Patches. Son of a bitch.

I was constantly fighting for my life in that place.
Got to some Lovecraftian
female?
monstrosity that would frenzy me...quickly... and terrified when I
escaped and heard her hauntingly singing in the distance.

Yeah. I don't think I'm supposed to be here yet.

So I went back and proceeded past the Forbidden Forest... but even this next place is proving to be a heck of a challenge.
Again, the
Lovecraftian element is huge. Now I'm dealing with weird multiple-eyed guys that have thin spidery legs hanging off their back and they try to jump on me. I find a mindflayer thing that is 20x harder than the one at the Cathedral Ward and has some disgusting white slug thing extend from his head. Motherfucker ate 4 of my insights. Oh... and probably the worst of them all: some big house-centipede looking thing that looks like it could be an ugly child of the Gaping Dragon
.

This fucking place, man.

So I survived all of that, opened a shotcut, and walked into what looks like
a library with a big spiral staircase. I get to the top and see a hunter just chilling by the fire at the top. I can target him/her, so I know they aren't friendly.
I had like 20k echoes, so I NOPE'd out of there and cowered back to the Hunter's Dream.

I'm at around LV.46.
Am I totally lost and/or out of my element- or is this just the joy of Post-Yharnam Bloodborne? :/

This, I didn't have any trouble with the basic enemies but the Hunter wrecked me, I just ran away from it all the time. I had to do some grinding at around the point you are to be honest.

I notice I play this game a lot differently than the others. I find that I don't worry about souls at all.

Also, I wish I was better at the perry and open-close gameplay mechanism. If I was better I'd think I could play more offensively. Like in the old games I still play defensively, and unless I've memorized the attack pattern wait for them to make a move.

Wtf? How am I supposed to know that?!

Did it expect me to explore every inch of the world again to find a new opening?

Lovin this game but this is the secobd time this has happened. The first being after BSB and a
random door opening in the cathedral
2 options: you looked around and found that route.

Or you were there before and then remembered that there was a door you could through and you go back there some time later, to look if it is open now.

I was really hoping I wouldn't have to kill
Eileen the Crow
, but
she failed to show up at Cathedral Ward after I cleared the area and beat Vicar Amelia
. Who else can I get a Caryll Rune from? As of this moment I've beaten
Cleric Beast, Father Gascogine, Gatling Gun Hunter, Blood Starved Beast, Shadow of Yharnam,Vicar Amelia, Rom the Vacuous Spider, and Eileen The Crow (Hunter)
. I wish this game made it a little more clear what some of your missions are, or at least cataloged it so you can review.

Did you check back at the
Vicar boss room since you've beaten Rom? She doesn't show up there until after you beat Rom. Though it seems you've already killed her.

Well with
the cathedral there is more than one way to open up the path to the church so I'm ok with it one of the path's being more obscure to find. I agree with you on the central graveyard though
but at least that's why we have GAF to find out where to go :D

Actually thats what happened after BSB. Stuck for a little but remembered the door in cathedral ward.

I dont recall any door in the graveyard, musta not noticed it.

46 is probably about right for there.
The bug dudes are pretty simple depending on the weapon
, just charge your R2 attack and time it with their run toward you, you should be able to hit them out of their grapple animation and follow up with another R2. Get some distance and repeat or stay close and do a non-charge R2 to finish them off. The
centipede thing
seems worse than it is, if you get close it does a
vomit style attack
you can dodge pretty easily and I think that's about it. I farmed this place for a while since it's relatively small and you get a decent amount of souls, that's before I found out about how much you can farm at the
Lecture Hall
though.

I'm actually pretty disappointed with the level design overall. The way everything connects is great and comparable to how the original Dark Souls handled it but all of the levels are really simple. There's nothing involved or legitimately challenging like Sen's fortress. At no point do you have to use items in interesting ways like Tomb of the Giants. Most areas are very linear save one or two paths, outside of a few that are just big open expanses that just scatter items at random. Doubt this is going to change as I'm pretty sure I'm very, very close to the end of the game. Just beat the
milkmaid
and all of the optional bosses, chalice aside.

It just feels like a really simple, stripped down game overall and unfortunately that extends to the level design. But of course when the essentials are that good it remains worth playing.

I feel the exact same way, something seems a bit off with the world design. I am also feeling a lack of wow moments from random giant creatures. I don't feel this game has a dragon on a bridge moment, or anything like the hydra at the giant lake.

Combat is much improved but I kind of feel like most other elements are a step back.

(early game spoiler) how did all of you take down
father gascoigne
?

i'm using a kirkhammer, it's my weapon of choice that i want to use. but i've been seeing a lot of people taking him out using hunter axe and it seems good for the long range, but i need to use kirkhammer, i can't give up on it. this guy has been the bane of my yarnam existence for the last 5 days. i get so close but at the end
on his last beast form
he just pummels me bad and i can't even strafe my way clear. i feel like when i'd play street fighter against a really good player, i can't get out of his huge chain of combos. i've tried using
the music box
but that gets me in more trouble than not using it. i've definitely psyched myself out with him by this point, he's my ivan drago and he has been breaking me. i know it's just going to come down to a lucky match sooner or later but in the mean time i hate him so much.

OK, what the FUCK is happening.

The farther I go into this game, the more I am noticing that the environments and enemy designs are going from merely creepy to straight up NIGHTMARE fuel.

This game needs to be classified as Survival Horror instead of Action RPG.

Anyone agree?

it's pretty awesome going into this not knowing what was gonna happen, haha

Exactly, it just feels static to me. Even the changing world conditions feel hallow as nothing changes outside of NPC dialogue becoming more unnerved.

Agreed.

The tone and atmosphere of the game go from gothic to straight up silent hill creepy. Its way awesome.

Probably has more "horror" elements than 90% of actual horror games these days..

Yeah, I have to say, not spoiling myself of this game before I played it was probably the greatest gaming decision I've ever made.

The whole game was like Anor Londo level of reveals and awe.

Have you tried
taking the fight upstairs when he goes into beast form
? Much easier in my opinion. Also
parry and visceral
when you're up there.

Ok, so I've finally decided to put Driveclub aside and start playing this game. As a mostly Soul's n00b (though I appreciate this is still a new IP), is there any advice or beginners tips you guys can prepare me with?

Parry. It'll kill him in like 4/5 of those.

Learn his attacks, shoot him in the face before he lands a hit. He'll get staggered, then dash in and press R1 to get off a visceral attack for huge damage. Even
his final beast form
is super, super susceptible to counters.

don't let the enemy hit you with their weapon and instead hit them with yours

At first the game is Bram Stoker/Universal Monsters. Then it's eases into Lovecraft. Then it delivers on Lovecraft with
Clive Barker / David Cronenberg-esque body horror explicitness.

Fucking amazing.

Kirkhammers a bad weapon man. Just parry him, it helps if you did cane.

second boss spoilers

using the music box makes him turn into the beast so much quicker
the way i brought him down was by using my gun and waiting till he's about to attack then stunning him and following up with a reposte by pressing r1 when your right infront of him when hes on his knees https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ubKOYqe6thU thats how i did it

So guys, having beaten VA, where should I go next from here?

Is it okay to jump straight into Un
seen Village
or will I get wrecked there?

Seems like
Eileen
has finally spawned in the Grand Cathedral for me to fight. What's the super easy cheese strategy again?

e: poisoning, I guess.

Huh? I tried exactly that back then and he still attacked me. On another run I killed the Paarl first and he loved me suddenly.

Church set not needed and neither is Paarl kill to talk to him (even if you have aggroed him previously).
What you need to do is approach him from the Paarl side of the map (from where you killed BSB) so that he doesn't see you enter, climb up to him and have a chat and get the badge and gesture if you agree not to hunt beasts. That is exactly what I did even after he tried to kill me previously.

The final area is simply one of the most unnerving experiences I have ever had in gaming.

I tried like 10 times to kill it, so no worries. In my experience
don't use the music box
that will just
trigger the transformation earlier
. So for the first part
if you really want to use the kirkhammer, hit and run, hit and run
until you manage to read all of its moves. Then when
he transforms, I would really suggest you to try a faster weapon and don't be too afraid to hit. Hit him hard and dash when he's about to hit you. Also, use your guns. It's not difficult to land him a counter + visceral attack once he has low medium/low health. and finally, use a lot of molotov cocktails if necessary
.

Killed
Old One Reborn.
Went inside, inspected the
throne. Got teleported to Lecture Room lv2.
Weird, you get to this place with the story ? I went to
level 1 through the giant creature grabbing me when I had 40 insight.
Killed everything there. Talk to
and let live the human headed spider.
It gave me a good rune. Now what ? The two donjons you can access from the
Lecture Room
are optional, right ?

Should I kill the
lady praying
in the unseen village?

Talk to her and
sent her to Iosefka's clinic

- it's ok to be confused about several aspects early on
- pay attention to notes on the ground
- play with your weapon - what it does after a backstep, while running etc
- walk a lot. traps/ambushes errywhere
- learn to pull guys by pinging them with pebbles
- take every fight seriously
- turn on auto lock-on next enemy in the menu; learn when to use lock-on and when not to as your dodge and the camera behaviour changes
- the gun is a parry that causes a stun if you fire it as the enemy attacks; when stunned run right up to them and swing
- Personal Effects menu is for seldom-used stuff; map quick use stuff to the Options menu lower tiles for fast access
- don't forget to keep an eye on your Stamina bar while fighting
- prepare to die

Still a disappointing selection compared to previous Souls' games. In those, you could always dress up as every single trash mob/most bosses. No such choice here which is a shame.

I want to rock the white-rimmed hats and white cloaks of the staff-wielding dudes around the cathedral. But I can't.

Seems like a weird omission considering how that was nearly a series mainstay. And for those who'd say "but it's not a Souls game!", well no, but Dark was a spiritual successor to Demon's just like this is a spiritual successor to Dark. There's still a lot of overlap so it seems weird to me that they'd cut one of my favourite aspects of the loot systems and take a step back in a sense.

Not to mention that a lot of the options are very samey, and the better looking stuff is in late game. I don't like doing NG+ I like making new characters, so weapons and armor only being available after you're nearly done is a major buzzkill.

Learn parries. Parry him right before he's at a 1/3 of health, which will make the second half bearable. He'll transform after that. While he's transforming throw an oil urn on him and then a molotov, should take off a lot of health. After that just hit him once or twice and he should be dead.

Sup guys, finally caved in and im getting a ps4 today for bloodborne, anyway, how long is the game? most people seem to be at ng++ already lol.

they are 100% not optional

Exactly, it just feels static to me. Even the changing world conditions feel hallow as nothing changes outside of NPC dialogue becoming more unnerved.

Lack of covenants is crazy too, at this point in DS I had multiple avenues encouraging online play, this game just leaves it there.

In terms of level design you only need to look at the first area of DS1 compared to BB. In DS there was a a path to the left, right and center. To the left allowed you to try to enter an area from much later in the game, no gates, no locks, it's open of you dare. Then you can go to the center and you find this giant bird and you hear noises from under the fountain, instant mystery. Finally you have your main path up a hill to a bridge with a dragon.

In BB you go down set streets and paths, the only branching paths lead to optional areas in the same location. No way to access a new area until you progress in a linear fashion. The whole game is like that. Yes there are the occasional branching paths with two choices, one usually optional but the game does not feel totally connected like DS at all.
