Bloodborne |OT+++| ...and so the Nightly Hunt continues

Back at the ending with my second character. Done everything but upper cathedral in just under 14 hours. Having fought my way through all the bosses so quickly it feels like the more exhilarating ones were kept to the chalice dungeons. The obligatory bosses are mostly lame.

Yep, this is where my run ends. All trophies but that
Yharnam, Phumerian Queen
one and I'm done with it because chalice dungeons are garbage, especially the cursed one. Halving HP isn't clever, it's artificial difficulty you fucking hacks. From should have just developed more for the main game.

Dunno what the reason was for going back to the grass system from Demon's Souls. The game is better than Dark Souls but the grass to Estus system might be the only thing I prefer.

I think it might have been due to the regain system and them wanting to put more focus on it.

I really like the blood vials system and can see why they chose to go in this direction, but its big failing is when you run out of supplies. Causes the game to come to a bit of a standstill as there's no reason not to go and grind souls for a bit so you can stock back up. Estus, on the other hand, never broke the flow of play.

Take a look at that post by Awntawn above ;)

Ha! Nice, thanks. Missed that completely. Will try later.

And looks like I'll try a bit of Alfred summoning for BSB (or other players summoning). I'm being proud and trying to do the whole game solo with no jolly co-op, but given that I'm only on boss 3 and its taken me hours to get here and I'm a total chump, I may have to let that rule slide....

Finaly got
Rom
down last night. The
Tonitrus
really helps in this fight.
Killed most of the spiders first and stayed close to him during phase 2 and 3 so he doesnt uses his missile attack.

Love how the world changes after you kill him.

The following post contains spoilers for Cai****** Cas***

Cleared the area, after the beginning area with the mos
quito beasts
, who wreck you to the moon and beyond it was rather easy. The enemies inside are pretty much fodder and free blood echoes.

But now to the boss,
Martyr Logarius
... wow ... managed to get him to the
second phase
and then finito.
That is one hell of a overpowered boss.

I'm around Blood/Soul level 50 ... too low for the boss without cheesing him in a stunlock?

Nope, 50 is fine. You can do it. It's a pretty tricky fight I'll admit.

Strategy
be more aggressive during the first phase, all he'll do is the wave of skulls and another move where he'll release a skull and detonate. I think it's guaranteed if you get in and hit him a couple times. Dodge with him and keep up the offensive. During the second phase there isn't much to it other than getting parries when you can and neutralising his sword magic. When he drops a sword there will be an explosion so stay back. After that go on and hit out and it'll stop

I liked the Demon's Souls grass system in Demon's Souls. Everything in DeS reinforced this central idea of permanent consequence. Dying made the world tendency darken, which could lead to PWWT being impossible to achieve. If you lost a crystal lizard, that spawn was gone forever. The bloodstain system fit DeS better than any other game, IMO, because of how it worked. Yurt killed off all your merchants, instead of just burning out 1 not-very-important bonfire. You couldn't just get an item belonging to the NPCs Mephistopheles wanted you to kill, unlike with Navlaan, you had to actually kill them. And they weren't nobodies, they were valuable merchants and had their own quest lines that you didn't finish 'til the end-game. DeS had a much more RPG'ey feel than the other Souls games because of how much your actions had game-changing consequences. It made me really weigh my actions carefully on my first few playthroughs, and really treat my character's life and belongings as precious. Grass tied in nicely with this. If you eat a bunch of grass and die, then not only do you lose all your progress, but also you have to do it next time with less healing wares. From a perspective of creating an interesting strategy game, this is really terrible, but from the perspective of giving your actions consequences, it was great.

Dark Souls didn't have this same feeling, so having an estus system makes more sense for them (I also think blood stains feel out of place in Dark Souls, and especially Dark Souls 2). It seems like, for those games, they wanted to focus on making the game more about the challenge of the combat, so yeah you don't want to distract players by making them want to go off and farm grass.

Bloodborne IDK how I feel about. Insight and blood vials could be interesting, but mostly they feel like a trivial resource once you progress a decent way through the game. Most people seem to just strut around with 99 insight and more madman's knowledge than they can use once they hit NG+, and have 20 blood vials at all times.

Henryk
seems like the new BP Satsuki from what I'm hearing of him.

I mean, come on, he even uses Makoto!

You mean the Hunter
in the Cathedral (VA Boss fight hall)? I don't think that's Henryk.
Isn't Henryk the Hunter Eileen fights at Tomb of Odeon (Father G spot)? Because after the fight you can buy his attire.

Yeah, I was thinking of the one in the dog house. I got mixed up.

Stuck on
Logarius
my attacks don't do much damage at all, only thing which does is parrying

I beat him in my first try, I had a +7 Ludwig's so that helped. I did most of my damage by parrying, just rush him down and get him to melee you. Also, Bolt Paper helps.

Goddamn that was something else! I thought Cannon was useless, but holy crap I was just being such a fool.

While the Cannon is amazing and *can* do that, let's put it in some context. It doesn't work that well on *every* boss and is the most effective on "large" bosses with big Head weak spots like
Ebrietas and Amygdala.
When fully upgraded and used with Bone Marrow Ash it'll put the hurt on those suckers when nailed in the head and is great for Staggering them for Visceral Attacks.

It's hard to do that much on other bosses, especially in NG+ and the high level Chalice Dungeons, unless you get some really lucky dead on shots. On many bosses, even with Bone Marrow Ash, it'll do maybe 1000 damage and frankly that's not very much. It is extremely impressive in the situations where it shines though. It's also fantastic in Chalice Dungeons for dealing with Witches and Bell Maidens.

Stat notes: At +10 it has a Base of 600 Damage. At 50 Bloodtinge it has a Bonus of +204 and sadly it has no Gem slots. I believe its Bonus ATK was around +120 at 25 Bloodtinge. So it's more about upgrading the weapon than it is raising your stats for scaling. Though it actually has the best Bloodtinge scaling, Guns, at least "on paper" and the stats screen just don't scale very well or scale weirdly. The Cannon gets +204 at 50 with only a D. The next highest is Evelyn which gets +160 yet has an S in Bloodtinge.

Guns at +10 and 50 Bloodtinge:

Hunter Pistol: 160 +115 (+175 with Gem)
Repeating Pistol: 200 +136 (+208)
Evelyn: 140 +160 or (+225)
Ludwig's Rifle: 55 +23 (+42)
Hunter Blunderbuss: 45 +38 (+57)
Cannon: 600 +204 (No Gem)

Now, don't be fooled by the Blunderbuss' or Ludwig's Rifle's low numbers there. Time to abuse some Villagers in Central Yharnam! Here's some shots I took with a Gem on the Guns.

Hunter Pistol: 252 per hit.
Repeating Pistol: 324 per hit.
Evelyn: 280 per hit.
Cannon: 723 per normal hit, can hit multiple targets, large blast radius. I was also getting some 1445s, I think it was nailing some Weak Points on the Villagers for critical damage possibly.
Ludwig's Rifle: 105 to 294 per hit depending on Range (closer is better), can hit Multiple Targets.
Hunter Blunderbuss: 50-600 per hit depending on Range (closer is better), can hit Multiple Targets.

For fun I loaded up Bone Marrow Ash with the Shotgun and unloaded at Point Blank - did some 1110 hits. If you hit something with the full spread of it dead on you can do some massive damage.

And to illustrate a point of how much those tiny numbers can make things vary. With no Gem in the Blunderbuss and only +38 ATK ,instead of +57 ATK with the Gem, I was only hitting for 345 max at Point Blank instead of getting 600 damage shots.

So the numbers may be small, and may not look impressive on the stats screen, but Bloodtinge Scaling is very meaningful. Personally, the Blunderbuss is my favorite weapon. It interrupts better than any other gun, and while it has very limited range, it can deal out some pretty substantial damage. I find it far easier to parry with it than the other guns and it will take some chunks of hp out when you unload it into something.

There's also the Flamesprayer, Rosamarinus, and Hunter Torch, but those scale off Arcane and not Bloodtinge. None of them can use Gems.

Flamesprayer: 95 +56
Rosamarinus: 80 +85
Hunter Torch: 100 +59

It's harder to test these, but let's give them a quick go for fun.

Flamesprayer: 300+ per tick, 2 ticks per bullet used, I think. Not sure, hard to tell on something with this low of hp.
Rosamarinus: 217ish per tick on these mobs.

This really isn't the best stuff to demonstrate these weapons on. They can put out some serious, fast damage on Fire/Arcane weak mobs and Bone Marrow Ash works on htem as well.

Hunter Torch: 180 per hit. Actually really useful in Beast areas since the little Beastman guys recoil at fire and hitting them with an upgraded torch hurts them a good bit. Also amazing for dealing with the only Physical Resistant mobs in the game that I found - the Blobby things in the sewer areas in Chalice Dungeons.

So there you go, some numbers on Guns and alternative weapons. It's too bad you can't upgrade the Wooden Shield and make it do interesting things.

God damn, those snake head things in the forbidden woods. Talk about a difficulty spike. I'm really liking this area. So well designed with all the possible shortcuts.

I somehow got all the hardest bosses including L
garius
on my first try, by just simply whipping them to death.

Regarding the cannon, it works brilliantly on R
om
, you can 3 shot him with Bone Marrow.

I give up on that Hunter in the cathedral. Maybe I just ain't leveled high enough to be able to take the hits. At low health it feels like he just goes on a teleport pistol shot frenzy and two shots and I'm down. So ridiculous

Wow, Abhorrent Beast is absolutely destroying me in Lower Loran depth 5 chalice. I'm getting hit by almost all his attacks. I had trouble the last time I faced him too but now it's insane. Not looking forward to the Defiled dungeons.

Yep, my new favourite boss. He destroys me every time I try to beat him melee, had to poison cheese him both times we met in chalices so far.

The one at the end of Eileen's quest? If you get him to transform his Chikage, it will gradually drain his health. Then run away until he de-aggros. Eventually he'll die from the lifedrain.

Yeah, I give up unless there's a way to cheese the bosses in the cursed chalice. Stuck on this first fucker because I pretty much get one shotted by all his shit. From can suck a dick.

Went through the defiled chalice a second time for my other character, destroyed that dog with beast claws. I think I fought the Abhorrent Beast 3 times with them tonight, it felt like it was meant to be that way.

a fan of the Souls series with an MGR avatar, TEW-ised.

do you like God Hand too?

we should be BFFs

I never played God Hand (never owned a PS2), I am not worthy D:

If you want to do it legit you can quite easily stunlock him with a fast weapon (kirk sword is fast enough). What I did was parry/VA him once, and then spam normal sword strikes when he gets back up until I'm almost out of stamina. At that point I just dodged back and waited for another parry opportunity. You really need to keep hitting him without stopping though, otherwise it'll give him time to fire his gun and kill you with a VA.

Like NAFTW said,
wait till he makes his blooddrain special and just leave the cathedral. If you wait on the stairs, you will see his health going down, while he walks slowly back to his starting spot.

Had this sucker down to a pixel of health in a fair fight, then he healed 40 % of his health and afterwards gave me a shot to the face which killed me (had around 50 % health). One of my biggest rage moments in BB. Still like this fight but it's really tough. Planning on beating him legit in NG+. Going to buy a second DS4 for it :P

good place to farm twin blood shards?
don't need many, i think like 5 or 6 but i've been running round for ages and have only found 1

^^Fucking hell guys DONT cheese out my absolute favourite fight in the game like this ;_;

FIGHT HIM

LOCK HORNS WITH HIM

I beat him by using Blue Elixirs. He seems to not be aggressive when they are activated, and he just kept walking into my full-charged R2 attacks. I did die a few times, but it took me less than 4 tries to take him down.

I will... going to make you proud (
or weep in a corner when he is going to make me his bitch
). Really like the entry and how he is standing there. You instantly know that there is trouble coming
(a fucked up Eileen in front should already give you a hint that trouble is coming)

Holy shit somehow glazed over the part that
he won't shift back to normal when walking back if you don't go near him again
. Well that will make things a lot easier haha. Wow.

Fuck.
End Game spoiler.
I didn't consume the fucking cords before beating Gehrman. My game is saved at NG+. I can't go back now can I?

Have to search the net for the audio files of Eileen. Love how she says "hunter". Thought at first that it's the same woman who voiced Chloe in Uncharted 2/3 (Claudia Black) but it's not her or at least she is not listed for BB on imdb.

Phew.

Beat the Defiled Chalice at SL 100. Gotta get the red jelly and then will only have the one left to go through. At least I get (late chalice spoiler)
full health this time around.

OH BABY

yeah the build up was absolutely sensational

Everyone keeps talking about that hunter. I got screwed out of fighting him twice. Bah. I bet even on my next characters I'll somehow have a glitched Eileen again and I'll never fight him. :(

What do I do with this bone marrow ash?

It boosts your gun damage. Pretty much only useful for the (weapon spoiler)
flamesplayer and cannon.
If there are other guns that it's good for, I wouldn't know.

Does the Kirkhammer's sword attack scale with strength?

Yes. That's why it's a nutty weapon. Fast STR scaling weapons are da best. Brings back Demon's Souls memories.
