Grand Theft Auto V Steam pre-load is live

Speeds are kinda slow. Usually I push 25-50MB/s from Steam. Can't complain though, since it should be done in 1.5 hours anyway.

Total bandwidth usage on steam is only up by ~0.5Tbps since earlier in the thread, and there were no issues then. Rockstar Social Club is having issues that are expected I guess, but Steam is usually well prepared for this stuff

I expected the RSC to get hammered. There are probably alot out there who don't follow it all too closely thinking they would all get Steam keys. Especially people buying from GMG

My friend almost bought the game to gift me via GmG before realising it wasn't the Steam version. They make it clear, but no one expects anything other than Steam keys from GmG.

I think launch will suck due to the servers / Social Club getting hammered. Not expecting to play on the first day. Kind of looking forward to what ever chaos happens haha

Im at 150kbps from RSC.
40mb fibre connection.
1 day and 9hrs ETA, its continuing to go up.

On the plus side, at least they did this soon enough for everyone to have the time to deal with long download times

For me, I didn't care that GMG didn't provide a steam key. When I saw that GMG would be providing keys to Rockstar's own DRM thing, I assumed the Steam version would use the same DRM things as well. I just knew that Steam would never give the game any kind of discount pre-launch.

There are also alot out there who think the Steam version won't use the Social Club DRM / wrapper.

The RSC is pretty damn good imo...I love how it tracks your progress... so for those achievement hunters (or anyone chasing 100% completion), it is a valuable tool.

I like how it is very subtle and you barely see it once you activate the game. Though I have had some big problems with it when I played Max Payne 3 a couple times. Such as having to reactivate after certain updates and also losing saved game data after another update. Though i was able to recover it after locating it in a different directory.

I hope it is better this time around.

I do. No reason to leave it on tbh. I found it extremely weird that my friend leaves it on for months on end.

Ah you aint alone, I turn my PC off before bed too. Always seems like a bit of a waste to have the PC running whilst I am asleep especially these days when it takes all of like 10-20 secs to boot a PC up from a cold start. When I get up in the morning I switch my PC on, go for a piss and lo behold my PC is up, ready and running.

I always thought it was more wear and tear on a power supply powering on and off every day. I never turn mine completely off.

So does the Steam version have any extra DRM?

it'll probably have social club in the same way as Max Payne 3 had. you have to log in to your RSC account when the game boots up through an in-game overlay in order to play. I never had any problems in MP3. You basically log in once and never encounter it again

I hope RSC can handle the load when the game is release next week. I can just imagine the meltdown after nearly 2 years and we get Diablo-like error 37 on day one

the game has two separate executables, one for SP and one for Online. same as call of duty for PC, for example

I'm guessing you can also launch online from the SP as you can in the console versions using the character wheel

Online infrastructure, co-marketing agreements, coordinated release dates, etc. etc. etc. There are plenty of reasons you don't make a change in the release date at this point in time unless you positively, absolutely have to.

Online infrastructure absolutely, but co-marketing and coordinating release dates? Those sound like bigger issues when you're involving big store retailers and getting physical copies out there from them to sell, but when the overwhelming sales for a game like this is probably going to be digital, I question how much things like that mean. Will it really affect places like Amazon and Steam if Rockstar pushed the release date earlier when those places are already sending out keys to customers?

I think the game still has some work to be done between now and the 14th (especially GTA Online), but I'm curious whether there's really much in term of co-marketing and retailer coordination that goes on with a PC release nowadays. Especially a release like this where the game's already on consoles and this launch only pertains to PC.

This game has a dual steam launcher in case someone didn't notice:

It's obviously not working, it gives you an error when launching the game.

60GB? Wut

I guess I'll need to buy a 2TB hard drive now.

When is GTA5 set to be released? I'm curious to see the benchmarks before I jump to purchase.

I hope this doesn't mean you can't switch between online and solo as seamless and you can in the console versions.

I think it is simply a launch option so if you want to jump straight into Online you can without loading SP first like you had to on console (or at least start loading SP first). I think you should still be able to transition ok between the versions in game.

(GTAO is just GTAV's .exe file with a different parameter)

I wouldn't worry about that. It seems like it works the same way as on consoles, you can jump straight into Online from launch, or go to it through SP.

Thank god Telstra upgraded my plan to 1TB. But I'll be likely to buy retail copy instead of Steam since it is cheaper than digital copy.

ah, good to see the seamless transition is still in there

I wonder if there is a way of stopping the money bonus from being applied if you preordered/purchased the game.

Wouldn't want to have that much money on hand at the start to be honest. That's one of the things I like earning in games like this.

59 GB? That means 59 hours of downloading for me. And I ain't ordering until I've read/seen good first impressions from launch.
