Grand Theft Auto V Steam pre-load is live

Since we're download speed dick waving, these were my download speeds when downloading a game on my campus internet when I lived in the dorms.

Wmc2pEy.png

That would have been real nice to have to GTAV!

How would you expect us to know?

I'm surprised Rockstar hasn't revealed the information to someone. The number of other trivial questions people ask them, albeit sometimes without conclusive answers, boggles the mind.

On another note... My download is still fluctuating massively. Currently at 61KB/s -_-

Man that download speed hurts eatchildren:p

Would take me about 45 mins on an 180/11 mb/s down/up connection (I get about 22MB/sec on steam, limited by my hard drive write speed it seems xD)

Probably faster than trying to install it from those 7DVDs..

Pre-ordered retail with Best Buy GCU + $10 back in rewards.

Guess I'll be getting paid minimum wage to wait for the 7 disc install to finish :(

Really wish Nuuvem had given out Steam keys instead of RSC codes. I have no idea if my game downloaded correctly or not. Got an error message when it finished, but I can't start the download again. It's taking up the full amount of space, so I'm hoping it's all there.

Embarassing speeds with the Rockstar launcher. Started at what is normal for me (between 15 to 20mb/s) but it's all over the place now.

Mine seems to be sitting a low but consistent ~260KB/s now. Whenever I first run the launcher I get my full 5MB/s but then it tanks catastrophically.

Yeah same thing happened to me. Error 1603 I believe it was. Tried googling it but couldn't find anything.

edit: actually it was right before the download started, though after I closed the error box the download went ahead as normal, so now I'm paranoid.

Yeah.. One of the most popular games in the world (and one of the largest datasize there has been) has one (literally one..?) of the worst servers in the world.. It doesn't quite add up. It's a good thing they decided to offer it as a pre-load. I had insta-regret for not buying it on Steam when I saw the download fall below 100kb/s on several occasions. But I downloaded it during the night, and the release is in four days, so it's not exactly THAT much of a big deal either..

I have the same experience (using the rockstar launcher). It starts at an reasonable 5 MB/s (but my Max is 15 MB/s, so still not great) and after around a half hour it drops to 300 KB/s. Restarting the launcher will give me the 5 MB/s again for a while, but it will eventually drop.

I rarely worry about my monthly bandwidth cap on Cox. It's 250gigs and I average 100-150 usage on a monthly basis. Worst recently was in October where I hit 200gigs. Looking back I picked up Farcry 4 from the 970 purchase and Battlefield 4 in the same month. I had to download Farcry 4 twice in that month as well, so that can add up.

But 60gigs for this game made me go check lol. Fortunately my month ends on the 14th and I've only used 85 gigs so far. Window is perfect for a GTAV purchase. Even though there's a good discount getting through Best Buy GCU or GreenManGaming, I have to stick with Steam here. I have some credit to use as well as preferring the platform hands down.

Same for me. It was downloading at around 8 kb/s for a few hours.

I guess we'll all be finding out how it went come Monday afternoon. Kinda makes me glad I have to work the night shift on Monday anyway; Tuesday will be my first real opportunity to dive in.

You guys are talking about bad speeds with the Rockstar Launcher, here I am trying to download the Rockstar Launcher and it's taking forever. It's only 175MB and yet, for some reason, it's going to take three hours to download.

Thousands of people are trying to download 60 GB each from Rockstar's servers. That's the reason: they are being fucking obliterated. How Rockstar didn't foresee this situation is beyond me, to be honest.

Classic...I emailed Rockstar support to try to find a solid answer over the unpacking files malarkey, and the guy had the audacity to point out how much disk space I have available on my SSD and requests that I uninstall some shit or else I "will be facing issue with missing files".

It was a poor response as he didn't answer my question directly, but reading between the lines it sounds like the RGSC will unpack to a combined total of 120GB like the Steam version.

Gonna play it safe now and move something before I launch it on the day.

Rockstar support seems pretty clueless, they keep giving different answers as to what time on the 14th the pre-load will actually be unlocking.

I just want to know if it's worth going to sleep early and getting up at midnight or whenever it actually unlocks :(

Yeah likely a scripted response. I got on a bit of a high horse when I replied, but it's probably not worth the hassle...will probably just give me something equally as useless back.

Isn't that why this is the longest time before release a preload has ever had?
Mine was fine yesterday from RSC at 4MB/s.
I'm in the UK, so I think the USA was asleep while I downloaded.

...Now I'm kinda worried that the servers for Online will get obliterated on launch. Hopefully, there's no authentication nonsense for single player should that happen.

I'm so torn between this and Dark Souls II Scholar of the First Sin!

Help me decide guys!
Lol, good one.

So I can download the preload to an external HDD and then decrypt it to my main drive to get around the double space thing, right?

I'm nervous because if i get cock blocked at midnight some how I'm gonna be so mad.

No, decryption is automatic and can't be designated to another drive. You can move it afterwards but you'll need the free 120 gigs on the external.

Rockstar support is godawful. Bought a game, can't even download it because the launcher won't work, and they are all either clueless or give generic replies that shows they don't understand the situation.

What is the problem? If it's the launcher not running, try renaming the file and adding a .exe to the end.

That's the way most preloads unpack. Needs the size of the game to decrypt and spit out the files.

Yeah but does it actually need 60gb?

cause the preload didnt download a big 60gb file but lot of 5 and 9gb files.

so i guess once they start unpacking they should be deleted.

They will be deleted at the end, not as they go along. The files on Steam add up to 59 gigs and will need 59 gigs to decrypt into. At the end you'll get 59 back.

Might be different for Rockstar Social Club but I would not put much faith in it.

It will need the space because the game has to verify in the end that everything unpacked ok. Of course it could check each archive individually that it has extracted fine but it's probably safer to do that at the end and just assume people have enough disk space.

I don't know about people bitching about the download servers. Apart from speeds varying between 100 KB/s to 8 MB/s it was fine considering how many are downloading the game. The installer also worked fine for me as soon as I unblocked its various executables in my firewall software.
