Games you remember, names you don't

Okay. Here's one for you, GAF.

In the early 2000's there was a fantasy FPS arena game. There were three or four classes that I can remember. Mage, Healer, Assassin(?) and maybe something else. Mage had elemental spells, fireball, ice, a tornado, etc. Healer had a pink shot ability, and could construct walls. The assassin had some kind of choking ability, and it was one of the few abilities that wasn't a bolt-type spell. You couldn't see the spell be cast and thereby track the trajectory.

I only really remember playing one mode, and that was one where you captured enemy team nodes or points. I don't think there were any special races. Everyone was just human. Models looked like early EverQuest.

Anyone?

EDIT: Spellbinder: The Nexus Conflict
https://youtu.be/tsKRsVxOa1o?t=17s

Thanks GAF.

It was for NES, I played it on one of those "X number in 1" cartridges. I THINK the player had to select units and send them up to fight the CPU's unit or something. It was a weird game. Most of the screen was green. At least the first level/wave because I could never get passed it. The units were all vehicles, IIRC. Sci-fi-ish.

I can barely remember anything about this game so sorry if it's too vague.

Overlord?

Oh wow, I've totally forgotten about this game, it's called Field Combat. I also played it on one of those cartridges and had no clue how to play it properly.

There was a game shown around the time the first PS4 games were being shown (I think), where a boy could travel between dimensions and solve puzzles around the world. It was a 3D colorful game.

Anyone remember the name?

EDIT - Found it. It's Oliver and Spike. And it looks like the game is in limbo =/

This one got bottom-paged for some, and it's intriguing me.

I remember playing a game as a kid where you played a guy who was stuck in his house which was on fire and you had to find a way out of the house before you were burned alive. I distinctly remember if you went upstairs it was instadeath because the toilet exploded (there may have been a bomb in it).

I'm thinking it was around the time of the BBC Micro / Acorn Electron, but I honestly don't know.

I never did get out of that house!
This sounds like a text adventure (that's rather more description than I'd expect from an arcadey game). Is it?

Did it have a comedic tone, or was it played seriously?

If it was BBC Micro specifically, it strikes me that it could concievably be a Topologika title, given they were text adventure devs who focussed entirely on the Beeb market.

Alright, I have two games I would like to figure out what they were called.

The first game, my dad swears is King's Quest. If it is I wonder which one. You play as this guy who looks kind of like robin hood in that he is wearing green. You are in this small town. I don't remember much about the town. Just that there was a tavern, an inn, a house with cat people were you could sleep at, and a dark alley were talking to the hooded guy would get you killed.

During the day you could explore the forest and town, but at night the gate closed and the monsters in the forest got much tougher. I remember distinctly a black alien panther would chase you. He was really strong. The combat was the directions, attack, and shield. Kind of like punchout. I also remember a mountain with ghosts that you expored. The game was for the PC in the 90's

The other game is another 90's PC game. It was about extreme sports. It had a number of different modes but I only remember skateboarding and snowboarding. In skateboarding you had to push the direction keys back and forth to move. You had to navigate through this long half pipe. Sometimes there you be a tunnel and you could spin around. If you lost control you would wreck and your character would like break their bones. In Snowboarding you had to get down this long mountain by avoiding all the obstacles in your way. I remember towards the end you are dodging rocks and the snow goes away eventually. I think if you complete it you get a cartoon image of your character celebrating on the beach below.

Not sure about the first one, but the second is California Games. Jontron did a video on it, go take a look at it and see if it rings any bells, but I'm pretty sure it's that!

That sounds like Quest for Glory. It's part of the extended King's Quest family (indeed, early versions were called "Hero's Quest" until they noticed a trademark clash).

There were two versions of it for the two iterations of Sierra's engine; I think the black panther enemy you describe is here (it'll cycle from the EGA AGI version to the VGA SCI version)

I don't know if anyone will be able to name this one, but I'd be grateful if you did.

I remember playing it when the gba came out, though I also can't remember if I got a gba when it came out or later, it was on christmas. I got a game that was a turn based jrpg, graphics looked good for the gba. The music was amazing I remember. You started off the game in a town of some sort, then you went to a cave, beat a rock golem monster I think, and all I remember is afterwards, the main character says something along the lines of "damn it!". at which point I'd always turn it off because I was young and didn't think I was supposed to see or hear curse words.

After that I don't remember shit. I do remember loaning it to my friend, and he got pretty far in it. I remember watching him beat a boss that was like a golden dinosaur/lizard? I think? god it was long ago.

Also, I remember the general battle looked earthbound-esque. Monster you're fighting taking up most of the screen, your characters in boxes below. I think.

I'd understand if no one could name this game, but I swear it exists lol.

Thanks, I just watched the JonTron video. It was pretty funny. At first I didn't think it was the game I was thinking of until I saw the California Games 2. That is definitely what I was thinking of.

Yep that is the one thanks.

Ok so ...

On one of those Multi-Game PC discs
Late 90s early 00s
Space Shooter - Vertical Scroll
3 Different Power Ups - Red/Yellow/Blue with varying levels
Good music and pretty good graphics
Can be played two player
Don't remember if there are bosses but I think there was a warp near the start to go to a later level

If Gaf can find this I'll die.

Phantasy Star Collection?
Golden Sun?
Breath of Fire?

Tyrian?

(That red/yellow/blue is bothering me, though. I don't think that fits Tyrian, but it does fit something in the back of my mind)

There is a game I remember from my youth on PC, I just can't remember the name.

You could play several people on the same keyboard, using different keys for movements and such. You could play as a jeep, or helicopter, or tank. The settings were on tropical islands and such, your objective was to destroy bases. I was really young playing this so I don't remember anything more than that.. help me GAF :D

This was late 90's

Edit: Just after posting this the game name popped into my head. Return Fire from 1995! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fyGy5rzyKGM

Nah it wasn't a text adventure game. It was back & white and I'm sure you used the arrow keys to move about the room. The fire started in one corner and slowly spread so you were trying to find a way out. There was a bookcase in the room and a set of stairs up to the exploding toilet.

I only say BBC Micro era because its one of the very first computers we ever had in the house as a kid.

Top-down viewpoint?

The bit that's bothering me, oddly, is the toilet that suddenly explodes. That's quite a difficult concept to convey in 8-bit graphics, which is why I was wondering if there's text description of it in some form.

I'm in a discussion with a co-worker who claims to have played (and loved) an old NES RPG that had an easily accessible battery on the side of the cartridge. Apparently it came with the claim "5 Year Battery Included" or something similar.

He swears it wasn't Wizardry or The Bards Tale, but it was very similar and turned him on to those style of games (i.e. 1st person dungeons). Any ideas?

p.s. He might be crazy.

Good graphics and good music RPG on GBA makes me think of "Riviera"

He figured it out two minutes after I posted this:

It was Dungeon Magic : Sword of the Elements by Taito. I never heard of that one. He said that it came with some sort of kit to change the battery if needed.

A PS1 top-down racing game, kinda similar to Micro Machines I guess? You could collect power ups I think, had a very stereotypical cast of cartoon characters. Controlled very poorly if I remember correctly.

Would make my month if anyone knows what I'm talking about!

Could be Micro Maniacs? if the characters you mention weren't in cars like micro machines that is

A friend is trying to remember an old import game that used to be on Cinematech pretty often back in the day. It's a PS2 game from probably 2004-2005. Japan only. I believe in the game you are a random guy (could be making that up) who walks into different rooms and talks to these weird glowing light people. They are sort of amorphous and are seated in different rooms on chairs. The game is just talking to these blue blobs. I think I remember reading about it at the time and it was based on a story of Japanese or Chinese purgatory, but I could be remembering that wrong.

Sound familiar to anyone?

Yeah I mean you never physically saw an exploding toilet because as you say, incredibky difficult to convey. You'd have a visual representation of an ajar door, but then text would explain that the toilet had exploded and you were dead.

I'm not sure if it was top-down or not if I'm honest. Isometric perhaps?

I wonder if it might have been How To Be A Complete Bastard. Trying to remember the potential toilet interactions there.

That said, while you could set fire to things (IIRC), I don't recall having to run from it.

Hoping someone can help me remember the name of a game, I don't want to play it or anything, it's just been bothering me for a few days that I can't remember it. I remember the graphics being top notch for the time, and I'd like to see how well it's aged.

PC Military FPS game released somewhere in the early 2000's. I want to say between '00-05. Took place in the middle east, I remember there being lots of urban combat, and I'm pretty sure it was squad based. Graphics at the time were very good. It was not a standard FPS game, I *think* I remember using some kind of radial menu to use tactics. For the time, it was probably considered a AAA game.

I've already ruled out Arma, Ghost Recon, and Operation Flashpoint, and SOCOM.

Third post! My second-most-important reason for joining GAF after 6-7 years of lurking can finally be addressed!

I remember seeing a YouTube video on here some time in 2009 (but that's not particularly relevant) and it was a scene where a guy was looking through a windowed door and he sees his wife or girlfriend or daughter going to kill herself, but there's nothing he can do to stop it. He pounds on the door but nothing happens and the act is carried out.

I'm not sure if he's in an alternate universe or something where he can only watch, or if he's a ghost (I don't remember any supernatural stuff in the scene).

Does anyone know this game/scene?

This is a fairly big spoiler for an FPS game from last generation and I'm not sure if this is what you're thinking about but it fits pretty well with what you're describing. If you're certain the woman kills herself and isn't killed by someone else this isn't it but I won't elaborate further.

Nope, wasn't that game. I'd probably have remembered playing a game with a name like that haha! Here's a rubbish picture I drew.

Ooooh, hold on a second, I think A View to a Kill had a level with a fire in a building, the perspective from your sketch reminded me of it. Never played it much so I don't remember if there was an exploding toilet.

Nope, wasn't that game either. Never a Bond fan. Also, I don't remember it being in colour. It still may well have been a C64 game though, as I did have one.

In my mind, I keep thinking it had the word "Escape" in the title, but truthfully that might just be because that's literally what you had to do!

It definitely started in your house though. I'm assuming there was a text introduction where you'd been sleeping, a fire breaks out and then you have to find a way to escape before it engulfs the house. At a guess.

Thanks for all the help so far!

Hmm, could it be The Great Escape?

Nope, not that game either, however I'm pretty certain it was in that style.

Denton Designs and Ultimate Play The Game (today's Rare) had a few of those isometric adventures, but I've never really played them much to know about the details like the exploding toilet etc.

Try these games:
Devon Aire in the Hidden Diamond Caper (aka Inside Outing)
Movie
Sweevo's World
Where Time Stood Still
Nosferatu the Vampyre
Knight Lore
Nightshade

Inside Outing seems to fit the description the most, I think.

Oh man, i think this is it! The pounding on the glass is definitely familiar but I swear the girl killed herself (but maybe it was the end of the video where I remember that from). Thanks! Too bad I actually have this game and was going to play it at some point haha!

The bit that's intriguing me is the fact that there's at least some semblance of a storyline. Most such games are basically just a sequence of platforming challenges (Nightshade is a bit more isometric-shmuppy, really). M.O.V.I.E. is a bit deeper but doesn't really fit the plot as outlined here, and nor does Where Time Stood Still.

And yet... something about this does feel familiar. Grrr.

GAF, this one's going to be a tough one since I'm light on specifics.

When I was a kid I remember watching a lot an older cousin play a NES shoot em up that for the life of me I haven't been able to pinpoint which one was it so ill make my best to describe what little I can remember:

As far as I know it was 1 player only (not sure though), it was all overhead with screen scrolling up and it was definitely set in space. You controlled a grey spaceship and I remember seeing in the background sometimes big hunks of metal (possibly slither big ass spaceships) passing by below the action. I also remember the game having great catchy music.

What game could it be? And before anyone says no, it wasn't Gradius or Lifeforce.

Star Force?

I've got one. Sketchy details. It was a late 80's coin-op. I remember it being a bit like a more actiony metroid. You controlled a spacesuited bloke who shoots stuff on side scrolling platform levels (not underground though). I think each stage may have taken place on a different planet but I'm not exactly sure.

Sorry it's so vague. I've been trying to find this game for years.
