THE STORY

Elliot Quest is an adventure/RPG where players explore the mysterious Urele island in search of an ancient demon. With 5 dungeons to conquer, 16 bosses to defeat, and countless treasures to discover, Elliot Quest is inspired by Zelda II: The Adventure of Link, and many other classy titles.

Elliot can’t die—but he’s still running out of time. In Elliot Quest, the victim of a rare curse must find a cure before he’s transformed into a demon.

After Elliot’s wife disappears, he falls sick and attempts to take his own life--only to discovers that he can’t die. Plagued by nightmares and growing weaker by the day, Elliot seeks out a local Sage, who tells him that he’s the victim of a rare curse. A demon called a Satar is slowly consuming Elliot’s vitality. If Elliot can’t find a cure to the curse before it’s too late, he will become a Satar. His only hope is to ask for the help of one of the island’s Guardians, who have kept the Satar from taking over Urele. Elliot can’t die—but he’s still running out of time.

Wow, I didn't even know this will be out tomorrow in NA, thought it'd be April, too. Very cool, can't wait to here some impressions from you guys.

What I enjoyed:

•Elliot Quest isn’t shy about its Zelda II influences, it embraces them. Many monster designs are reminiscent of the NES game; key barriers are exactly the same and there are even statues on the walls spitting bullets. It’s less a homage than a game built from the ground up on the Zelda II canvas but it’s definitely not derivative. It’s fun, and it looks and feels great.

•The dungeons are particularly well-designed and, in true Zelda or Metroid fashion, make good use of your recently acquired powers or items. I did find some checkpoint placements to be a bit distanced from each other, but overall there was a nice pace to them that felt natural and satisfying. At the end of each dungeon, the pattern-based boss fights demand a couple of tries and almost feel like an artificial barrier.

•Having unlimited arrows, Elliot’s main weapon, is oddly satisfying.

What bugged me:

•Where to go? How to reach it? Am I at the right place? Early on, Elliot Quest raises many questions and don’t count on the few NPCs to help you out, they will not. It’s a bit too easy to get lost or wander around clueless. I’ve even restarted my first hour or so of gameplay since I was literally stuck doing some backtracking after the first dungeon. Maybe I was stupid or I encountered a bug, but after an unsuccessful Internet search and various attempts that felt too weird to be real solutions, I gave up and started anew. So, warning here for precocious adventurers.

•The game is challenging but not insurmountable, but it would have been a bit more fair if the enemies dropped hearts a bit more often, or at least, a bit more conveniently. Too often I died not being able to replenish my health only to go back in the same area, health at full, with enemies dropping heart after heart. This happened a bit too often to be only a coincidence or maybe I’ve been spoiled by the generosity of the modern Zelda games.

•Sadly, there is no Controller Pro support, e.g. one of the best controllers I ever had. Only the Gamepad (which supports Off-TV Play as well as a convenient map feature) is supported.

C'mon, another title without Pro Controller support. I stopped playing Teslagrad until it supports the controller. Sometimes I just don't want to hold the GamePad, especially if it doesn't do anything useful :/
 
I'm interested to see how this game reviews when people finally play through it. It's quite good.

Let the dev know. The PC version lacked some basic options on launch (like Full Screen). We let him know and he patched it in quickly.

They know about it, since October 2014. I've asked for an update on twitter.

Edit: Oh man, Pro Controller support has been added. Should've launched the game so it can install..
 
I'm kinda confused on what kind of a game this is. Is it a sort of Metroidvania or more like a straight forward 2D adventure?
 
So this is a weird feeling. This might be the first time in years I've play a game and there's no guide online detailing every secret and where to go next. It's like I'm back in the SNES era.

So far I have the whirlwind ability and just got the bombs from the goblin cave. I can't seem to find a place to replenish bombs anywhere, and I think I've checked every area available to me but my abilities don't get me any further. I also picked up an Old Key, but that also seems to lead nowhere. Can someone drop me a hint?
 
I played this at IndieCade a few months ago and it felt kinda rough. Like there were noticeable framerate dips despite it being an 8 bit game on an HD console, which in my opinion is kind of unforgivable. I hope they've ironed that out, because it looked like it had potential

The Wii U version has minor but constant hitches in the framerate, but only if you use the gamepad screen for map/items. Setting the gamepad to mirror the TV (how the game handles off-TV mode) seems to fix most of the framerate issues.

It's like Zelda 2: top-down map that's used to select side scrolling levels and towns. Items and magic are used to access previously unreachable areas and to progress through the game. There's an experience point system and heart/magic containers.

So far I'm enjoying the game. Levels have a fair amount of exploration and hidden items, there's a good variety to the enemies (some of which are lifted straight from the Zelda series), and the bosses have been pretty neat. Definitely worth checking out if you like 2D platformer/adventure games.
 
I'm certainly interested, but being charged $3 extra over the Steam version seems a bit weird...

Apparently it has extra content? Is it exclusive to Wii U?
Dev just told me it's exclusive. I feel much better about price now. Will check it out soon.

Game's pretty cool so far. Upgrading the bow's reach right away makes the game a lot more fun. Fought two bosses so far. They were well made. Not too easy, not too difficult. Pretty fun visually too.
The crown on the "king jelly" was fun

It's cool to see the way enemies react to your different abilities, and the game controls well. And of course it's nice that the game trusts me to let me go where I want.

Hopefully the game holds up for the entire playthrough. But so far I'm into it.


Edit: Fought another two bosses. They were good. One especially put the abilities you have to good use. But I died more than once against one bosses because my jumps got screwed up by frame drops. Which is pretty surprising because I don't really feel like there was anything demanding going on when it happened.

But I'm still into it. Not really sure why people are complaining about getting lost. Is there a turning point in the game where everything just gets jumbled up? Because so far it's had a pretty simple progression. Walk into an area, try to do something, leave if you can't, continue if you can.
 
Gaining XP in this game is a challenge, I've died a lot so I just keep losing XP. Really like the progression and dungeons so far!

in the desert and got a heart piece for beating the boss.
. But, I'm now stuck.
where do I go? The next dungeon like area in the desert that has mario-like spinning flames is blocked with a cement wall when I start climbing up. Where btw do you get the flame arrow?

Are you looking for a way to light fires/lanterns? You should check out the village, make sure to have a little cash on you.
 
Sorta want, but not enough to cop. Will probably wait for a Wii U sale then grab as I got to much shit too still play.

No, I have the candle. I am reading that I may have encountered a game breaking glitch because I did not get a weapon upgrade when defeating the second boss...

I think if you find trophies you don't lose as much XP when you die.

Minor spoilers related to trophies
the random enemy encounters on the overworld have some things you can find, and I think each enemy has 3 different variations

If I'm thinking of the right boss, you did not miss anything.

The dungeon you're talking about is down closer to the beach.

i entered that dungeon but have no idea where to go. When I enter, I head up a ladder with a rotating flame and then eventually hit a literal brick wall. If I try go left on main floor I can't proceed to the left because there is a lava chasm that is too wide to jump across. What am I missing?

If it's the area I'm thinking of:
You climb up until you hit the stone door, those are locked until you kill all the enemies in the room. You'll eventually get to the top and there will be a path down that gets you across that lava chasm.

If I'm wrong, could you post a pic of the area?

This has to be my problem. I am fairly certain I haven't cleared all enemies in the room.
didn't know that's what the stone walls were blockades from.
 
You guys are in for a real treat with this game. I haven't played much of Zelda II, only a little bit of the GBA port and the bits and pieces included in NES Remix 2, but this is one heck of a game. It's pretty much (a) everything I've ever heard Zelda II is, but, y'know, more modern, and (b) blows most (2D, I guess?) retail and indie games out of the water in terms of value. Heck, I've gotten more time out of it already than some full-priced games.

That's all kind of vague, though, I suppose. At its heart the game kind of evokes Mega Man 2 or Shovel Knight, but with many more secrets and a lengthier play experience, and with a Zelda II overworld setup rather than a level select or level map. It's an immersive experience with a very Zelda-esque sense of progression. As you gain further items and abilities, full heart containers or heart halves (i.e. 1/2 heart containers), and as you level up, you really feel like you're getting deeper into the depths of the game world on offer. I really like the experience system--defeat enemies, gain experience. Die, and you lose a chunk of experience.

And in playing the game my wife and I have been losing a heck of a lot of lives, especially when accidentally going into areas with tougher enemies we're not supposed to go to yet. (This has always been one of my favorite aspects of Zelda games or Zelda-likes--stumbling into areas I'm not supposed to go into yet, only to find an usual Kakariko Village or a glittering Lake Hylia with a few stray keese flying about...or perhaps a tunnel from the Lost Woods to Death Mountain. Okay, you can tell which single Zelda had me feeling like this the most, but still!) Anyway, yeah, so--there are a lot of areas like this. There's a lot of backtracking and kind of stumbling around in the dark (metaphorically and literally!). Which is very satisfying because it feels great to go back to an area and be like, oh, *now* I can do something here, yay!

So, the leveling up system itself is pretty cut and dry. You get to select individual attributes (wisdom, agility, etc.) to improve in specific ways. There are also good/evil paths and some clever ways to stay on either path or in the middle of the road, which oscillate between very clear and somewhat obscure.

Save system is awesome, BTW. You walk up to a liberally scattered save point. It turns blue. You're all set! And, it acts a respwan point.

A few tips for new players with very mild spoilers:

-There's a bit of troubling slowdown at some point when too much is going on onscreen. Turn Off-TV Play on to reduce this issue (it's at the main menu when you boot up the game).

-Game plays really well with a Wiimote only if you're into that kind of things.

-The boy who lost his bomb bag. Don't talk to him again after you get it back unless you want to be faced with a difficult decision.

-Shell shards. Keep at it with the turtles and you'll get what you need.

All in all, with a solid 8-10+ hours logged at this point and plenty of game surely ahead, I can give it a very high recommendation.
 
Just have a quick question for you all when you have a sec. We're in the mountain temple and I see from videos online that rocks are supposed to fall from the ceiling and fall away. They don't seem to be falling and when we fight the boss the rocks are sticking around and making it kind of impossible to avoid getting hit. Is this a glitch? Thanks!

BTW, this ended up being part of a glitch, which is now supposed to be fixed!

sad to see the OT is so small, this game deserves more praise! it really is a love letter to classic action adventure games.

I wouldn't have been against some kind of hint system through an npc or something though. I've been stuck roaming around for several hours.
beat the second boss, paid some dude to repair a bridge somewhere, found the amulet of block-pushing, I have no idea where to go next. Even met a boss I couldn't hurt in the snowy area and a goddess that promised me something something
 
This was the first game I downloaded last night after buying my Wii U. As much as I fell in love with the damn thing, I could not help but feel like something was wrong. It felt sluggish in a way that is hard to describe. Well, I decided to try the PC version today and yeah... the Wii U version is definitely worse in terms of performance. And I don't mean occasional framerate drops, I mean it feels less smooth and responsive at all times.

I love this game too much to play what is in my honest opinion a gimped version so I'm just going to wait in the hopes that a PS4 version comes along at some point in the future (I don't want to play it on the PC either).
