GTA V PC Performance Thread

Any consensus on whether ultra grass is worth the performance hit? I'm trying to decide between locked 60 fps with very high grass (no grass shadows) or drops as low as 42 fps with ultra grass (but it looks so beautiful!!)...

I7 3770k @ 4.2ghz
SLI GTX 780ti @ 1242mhz with boost
32gigs of DDR3
Windows 8.1 64bit

50-60FPS 99% of the time at 2560x1440, with all settings at max and x2 MSAA.

Didn't grab the game yet, but I'm glad Nvidia loaded the GTX 980M with 8GB of VRAM.

More CPU benchmark. i7 5960x takes the top spot despite of running at a measly 3.0ghz, which indicates some great multi-core scaling.

Someone should post this in that 'Core i3 is the sweet spot' thread. Lmao.

Why does the physical copies of the game require a patch?

Retail DVD's have to be manufactured, printed and distributed. This can take around 2 to 3 weeks. It is fair to say once GTA 5 went "gold" (ie sent off for duplication) Rockstar continued working on the game. So in the 2 - 3 weeks the game was being manufactured and what not there was new data created which is probably what the 5gb download is.

The digital version did not need a 5gb patch because it was put up a week before release so they could include that new data in the preload.

I have a GTX 860M, i7 4810, 8GB RAM, installed to SSD and getting a pretty solid 1080p, 30FPS.

I know it's not as cool as 60FPS with maxed out settings, but you have to make some concessions with a year old mid-range gaming laptop. Got textures to very high (even though the settings is giving a warning that I'm out of memory) and the rest of the settings on a mix of high to very high (and a couple to normal). I'm already pretty impressed with how it looks, though I am curious to see if I can bump up a few more settings without sacrificing too much performance.

So far seems like an incredibly well optimized port. Compared to the opposite end of the spectrum, I could never get AC Unity to run as any more than a stuttering chugfest on this machine.

Is it a Kepler or a Maxwell?

So what's the verdict on a 970? What can one expect to disable to ensure 1080p 60fps?

Turning shadows down a notch seems to help quite a bit in the city, but once you get to the areas where there is heavy foliage, prepare to gimp A LOT of settings. Stuff like post fx, long/soft/high resolution shadows have to be disabled or you're looking at sub 30fps. Mine went down to 23 before I had to lower those settings.

I'm on i7-4790K, GTX 970 if you're wondering.

So I don't know how to take screenshots in this game but has anyone noticed a kind of "draw distance" for shadows? Like within a certain - very small - radius, the shadows look great. Move back and there's this line that travels and blurs out some shadows and removes others. It's kind of like a pop-in.

I've adjusted almost everything I could think of and can't pin it down. I have max draw distance and even half extended long shadows distance. Thoughts? It's very obnoxious.

Considering there are numerous draw distance sliders for shadows and long shadows etc etc, this has to be a bug. This shouldn't happen with everything cranked up. Also lot's of flickering shadows, I hope it gets patched.

What i meant with the grass and MSAA issue..this is without MSAA:

And this is with MSAA:

Notice how the grass seems to become more transparent and less dense with MSAA activated.

I have to quote myself here, regarding the grass and MSAA problem, it looks like some sort of sorting problem to me...see here: http://wiki.polycount.com/wiki/Transparency_map#Sorting_Problems
I've seen this before, looks like what happens when you activate alpha-to-coverage in the ArmA 2 engine. Its especially visible in the countryside in GTA, quit annoying really because the grass on the horizon looks transparent.

Pathetic Rockstar. This is the worst experience I've ever had with a game. Granted I've never had many issues in the past on PC, but still this is pretty fucking horrible. Downloaded the game for a 3rd time, got it to boot up this time, unlike the second time I dl'd it. Go to run the benchmark and ERR_FIL_PACK3. Fuck you. Is it really that hard to put a file verification system in place on your 60gb game? Something small devs and publishers often do for their games that are a 1/10 the size of yours.

Lowering grass detail from ultra to very high did the trick for me. Meaning that i can stay above 30 frames in the countryside.

Get a friend to run an md5 of each file and compare them so you can figure out which file is borked.

Windom Earle 's settings from the previous page run well. I suppose I'll see what happens when I get there but I ran the benchmark and there were very few drops from 60fps which included the country side.

Him and I have the exact same CPU GPU and RAM

Any way to use Steam overlay with a non-steam version of the game?

It loads fine but as soon as GTA 5 actually starts, Steam acts like I've quit.

Shit, I'll have to try fullscreen since so many of you are saying it gets rid of the stuttering.

RIP borderless window :(

Set the game to NOT pause when out of focus and you'll get faster alt-tab times. (or so i heard)

Yeah, running this at 45 to 60 with a FX4300 makes my CPU freak out to 80 to 90, but the heat isn't rising so I'll keep playing.

Or maybe I'll chill out until they bring a damn No Cops cheat out somehow.

I've found that the in-game vsync option is a little screwy. No matter how low I set my options, I get a slight stutter every second or two, like clockwork. If I disable vsync and force it through Nvidia's drivers, the stutter's gone, but then I'm stuck without triple buffering (I'm pretty sure the in-game vsync option also uses triple buffering).

Man, that G-Sync monitor can't arrive soon enough. HURRY UP AMAZON

Shit, I'll have to try fullscreen since so many of you are saying it gets rid of the stuttering.

In my experience, fullscreen reduces the microstutter I'm getting but doesn't eliminate it. The only thing that fixes it is forcing vsync at the driver level instead.

It should be noted, continually, that you should get through the prologue before running the benchmark. It loads a completely different map at the start, so they really shouldn't even let you run the benchmark at that point.

And what the above poster said about checking the MD5 hash. You're right, the file verification is something they SHOULD be doing, but that's why a lot of people trust in Steam alone.

I get no sound out of my center channel speaker with Dolby Digital. Literally never had this problem before. Dialogue doesn't work even with dialogue boost in cut scenes. Wtf.

Anyone know why I'm getting this pixelated shit in the bottom right?>

My video card isn't dying, and its the only game that does it.

Yes! I had the exact same thing last night, I thought my GPU was dying but like you said it was only GTAV that did it, I fixed it by lowering my reflection quality and reflection MSAA, I had them too high I suppose. Are you using an AMD card with the new beta drivers by chance?

The only issues I've had so far:

1.) My graphics drivers crashed twice - I'm on the newest Nvidia drivers.
2.) When vsync is turned off in game, the menus get extremely laggy (I'm on a 144hz monitor, not sure if that happens to matter in some way).

Other than that, I have had a great experience so far. Runs very nicely on my 3570k / GTX 970.

Agreed.

Been trying to download since this morning.

The biggest piece of shit download I've ever experienced. I think you have that problem for deleting a .part file.

How they fucked up so badly is unbelievable. Never again will I buy a rockstar social game.

Glad to see is not just me, the shadows are making me crazy.

Yeah. When I did the first stealth mission (lol) I was walking across the tennis court and it was really obvious and so bad looking :( Hope it's something that gets addressed. I'm getting tired of tweaking. Just want to play the game now.

Reposting to see if there's any info on older cards, like GTX 560Ti, yet

I have the AMD equivalent - AMD HD 6950 1GB - and found the following.
Most information is for the 560Ti since I couldn't find too much info about my 6950 lol. Guess the Nvidia card of that generation was more popular.

I tried to find other videos (Search term: "gta 560". Filters: upload date: today) but only found users running at non-1080p resolutions like 720p, besides the above videos.
Probably will find more videos tomorrow.

With these settings last night on stock clocks on my Titan X's, I got the following:

xXkhImz.png

Played for about a hour today. Completed Father/Son mission which involves a fair amount of driving around, and I got these numbers today with an overclock:

oJevawC.png

Right at 60fps. 11 fps gain from my OC. Again this is with 4x MSAA, TXAA, 4k and max everything else. Pretty amazing and it looks incredible.

Please give me your cards. :D

Personally I would've turned off MSAA, I tried it at 4x for a while yesterday and it still looked worse than the FXAA at 1080p, still had plenty of jaggies on my car. Gonna add SMAA later though, because fuck FXAA at 1080p.

I'm quite pleased with m performance on my 970, turned down a few things one step and I'm usually at 75-100FPS and that feels good enough on my 120Hz.

Yeah, exactly like far cry 4. The shadow is sharp up till a distance where it blurs, an a line created at this point.

So I've got a pretty solid 60fps vsync fullscreen going with my system.

Everything is set to Very High and all the basic graphic sliders are all the way up except

tessellation: Normal
FXAA only AA

Under advanced I have long shadows on and both sliders are set about 1/3rd the way up.

I've only dipped below 60 twice and both were super quick and hasn't done it since. Played about 1.5 hours tonight through Franklin's early missions in the city.

We'll see how the countryside goes. I'll have to turn stuff down I'm sure. Grass and shadows might have to go down a notch. Really want Andy's breakdown.

i5 2500k @ 4.2
EVA 970 FTW
8 gigs RAM (8 more on the way lol)
Win 8.1

3D has some issues so far

edit: ok, these things might be related to SLI

- menus and certain vegetation are only rendered for the right eye

- the game starts in windowed mode when 3D is activated, which makes 3D incompatible; you'll have to activate fullscreen manually when the game is loaded

- sometimes shadows are also only rendered for a certain eye - but it's easily fixable by changing any graphical setting or by disabling & enabling 3D

2.) When vsync is turned off in game, the menus get extremely laggy (I'm on a 144hz monitor, not sure if that happens to matter in some way).

Yep, same here.

Know what GAF? Just capped it to 30 FPS using RTSS, running it now @ 2560x1440 with 2xMSAA and TXAA enabled, everything on max except grass at very high.

I'm not sure why, but this game @ 30 FPS feels good. Crysis @ 30 FPS good. Probably a good motion blur implementation.

Regardless, runs rock solid, GTX 970 here, no dips, amazingly looking. I'm more than happy.

haha, you got some corrupted .rpf files too? That downloader is truly the worst.

Some? All but like 3 audio files were corrupted and every single main game file and update/dlc file was corrupted. On my 3rd download of the game. This is beyond pathetic.
