I watched the OT on bluray recently. I've lost my nostalgia for them and, as films, they didn't really hold up for me. I would not be surprised if TFA is a better movie than all previous movies

I mean, don't get me wrong, I still love them. For me though, growing up with them made me biased toward them. The prequels get slammed for bad acting and writing, and I won't deny there's some of that, but I also don't think the originals were particularly good in that regard either. I don't expect many to agree and that's cool, but I feel like aside from the ridiculous abundance of CGI and admittedly some things that are legitimately worse, that many complaints the prequels get can be applied to the originals as well.

But, being a young fanboy growing up with the movies, you didn't really give a shit and you still don't. New installments, however, are being criticized in a more segregated environment. Now, again I'm not saying that they're not up for criticism, there's some really awful shit in the prequels. But do I firmly believe that if the originals came out today that they would be slammed about as hard? Absolutely.

I have already submitted to the fact the film wont be that good and wont fulfill my expectations, but thats fine, I figure I have two choices

a) Go on a media blackout and lose out on years and months of fun speculation and shared community excitement, watch the film and it not meet my expectations or

b) Embrace the fun, embrace the hyperbole and have sporadic moments like yesterday where I can be super happy and share all of that with fans, watch 40+ reaction videos and the trailer a hundred times, pick everything apart and then go see the film and it not meet my expectations.

But thats just me

The 8 year old version of you would kick your ass, man! :P

I know what you mean, I think recently, I am much more critical of the OT than I was as a kid. Nostalgia plays a huge factor in my love for Star Wars, but I do truly love so much of the lore and the universe as a whole.

The thing about Star Wars is that they're loved for about eighty billion different reasons. The actual quality of the films is all over the place, but when you love the characters and settings and action and art design things like dialogue or acting, even directing can and does take a back seat. Also when you love something it's much easier to criticize it over the years. There's plenty of things that you go back to and think, damn, this maybe isn't as good as I remember, and that's because of mindset. When I watched Jurassic Park, I was 10. It blew my fucking mind open just like Star Wars did. But you can revisit it and see where time and experience can sponge out the flaws. I don't think they matter much as it's a great film still, but where I would have once declared blasphemy on anyone that had anything remotely negative to say about it, I'd understand now.

It doesn't mean we think lesser of it, it's just that as you grow up you're more able to recognize problems and the "magic" has morphed into "people made stuff with models and computers." It's still impressive as hell, the intelligence and skill and technique that goes into stuff like this, but when you're a kid it's more like an illusion and it takes your mind on a trip. And things you never used to care about, like acting and writing, are way more obvious. The new car smell will wear off eventually, but hey, it can still be a very nice car.

Found this while surfing Youtube; it's basically the teaser re-visualized as a trailer on an old VHS, complete with old Lucasfilm logo and 4:3 aspect ratio.

The tracking effect is a bit overdone at times, but it really cements the cinematography as belonging to that era, especially when it comes to that very first shot, which I never thought I could love even more until I saw it reinterpreted in this manner.

That might one of the coolest version of the trailer I have seen so far. Your right, watching that it fits. It's crazy how much it fits.

With the tracking effect toned down a lot, this would be perfect. VHS isn't THAT bad haha

Okay thanks. Now I have to find my VHS player and the 1995 version of the OT to watch...

There's a reason that shit has less than 30 views, and it's because whoever made it WAY overdid that annoying as fuck tracking error.

That's not even how tracking errors really work, consistently.

I can appreciate the rest of it... but that noisy loss of signal... tracking effect is it? Retarded. Just ridiculous. I wouldn't put up with that shit back in the day. The only kind of media I've ever see that was that bad were VCDs. And the VCDs that happened on, you'd just toss, because the movie would be unwatchable. This trailer is also unwatchable.

I can't imagine how bad the editor of this one had his VHS back in the day if he thinks watching a video like this is supposed to be nostalgic.

Totally agreed on the tracking effect taking away from the trailer's quality. It's a shame that there doesn't seem to anything of comparable quality out there; I did find two teaser #1 videos done in the same manner, but one is just crap, and the other reinterprets it to the point that's a completely different trailer.

Well, they did have bad acting and writing. Also, something tells me you have a distorted view of feminism.

Well, since Joss' complaint was about 70s era sexism and Empire was made in '79, he'd be right on the money!

trailer reaction, from the fans at the Empire Imax Cinema in Leicester square in london, hosted by warwick davies

Look at all the people filming the trailer on their phones. Instead of watching the trailer on an IMAX screen, they're staring at it through their dinky cell phones. And for what reason? To upload a cell phone-quality version of the trailer to YouTube, where it has already been officially released?

I'll never understand some people. Live in the moment, you guys!

It's cool how we can now tell which children grew up with broken VHS players back in the day.

It was a jab at Whedon's jab at the Jurassic World clip where he complained about a rogue-ish guy flirting with a girl of high stature, claiming it was some kind of unacceptable sexist scene.

It's okay because it was in the 70's lol

That sound when the X-wings passes by makes me feel soooo good. The sabers swinging, blasters blasting..force powers being used...man this movie is going to have such a satisfying audio experience.

The sights and sounds of these movies have always been incredible. I'm so excited that within the next year we will be able to afford some expensive audio and video equipment for our home theater... mainly because of Star Wars.

Yup, your views on the subject are about where I suspected. Joss was right about that scene in Jurrasic World. It's super disappointing and feels stuck in 70s era gender politics, of which Star Wars was very much a part. Thankfully, there's a little thing called progress.

I have some mediocre computer speakers and it sounded phenomenal on those. I cant imagine what its gonna sound like with some professional grade equipment. I dont think I can handle it.

I don't know what the hell you two are talking about the OT holds up REALLY well today. I watch the OT at least once a year and nostalgia has nothing to do with my enjoyment of those movies since I watched them for the first time when I was in my late teens after having watched all the prequels. Empire, for example, is just the perfect movie and I think personally the finest movie ever made. I'm surprised every time I re-watch the movies at just how well the hold up.

So guys can't flirt with girls in movies anymore? Educate me on how this is suddenly some kind of new and horrible, reprehensible thing. I love and appreciate women but the thing is that the girls in both of these scenes are also attracted to the guys. It isn't painting women in some kind of bad or immature light. It's typical human nature.

I didn't say they don't hold up. They hold up in a number of ways. I just never thought the acting and dialogue were anything superlative, but they didn't really need to be.

At the very least TFA will look much better than the prequels. Check out that art design. They have that shit nailed.

JJ has always been great with casting and art direction. Despite my hatred of his Trek films, I really enjoyed the new actors and visual design.

I think Star Wars is more up JJ's alley, so this is definitely an opening night viewing for me.

Totally agree. I wasn't even born when the OT was released so nostalgia isn't a factor for me at all. Empire's my favourite film.

Nor was I, but I still saw it for a first time. I without a doubt feel nostalgic towards them. I'd argue I can see past the nostalgia, but I benefit for approaching the OT in both ways.

I'm not saying that they're bad now because nostalgia. Just that when you're younger and your mind is more care-free that you don't really give a shit about aspects that you're going to later give more of a shit about like performances and dialogue. The movies are still awesome as all hell, but like anything else after some time they get easier to criticize. But we mostly choose to ignore that because they're still awesome and, yes, nostalgia makes us not want to.

That's all I was saying about the Han and Leia stuff. It's not bad, but I know for a fact that if Empire were about to be released and they showed that scene in the tunnel at the beginning that the same people who rip movie clips to shreds would be doing the same thing with that.

I'll agree with that on some levels, I'll be honest I don't think Mark Hamill is that great of an actor. I feel like Harrison Ford kinda walks around everyone in those movies on an acting level. And, Billy Dee Williams also suffered from giving a less than stellar performance although apparently the dude could never remember his lines. Still, despite all of that I think they are some of the finest movies ever made.

Totally agree. I wasn't even born when the OT was released so nostalgia isn't a factor for me at all. Empire's my favourite film.

The most important difference between original and prequel trilogies is the story. The story in OT is easy to follow, exiting and drives the action forwards. in prequels the story is a confusing mess, that relies too much on main characters just happening to be in the right place at the right time, instead of driving the action.

In first case, even if the characters were weak (I don't think they are), dialogue bad (not really, but there are some one-liners we could live without) or acting bad (Alec Guinness and James Earl Jones did a brilliant job*), it wouldn't matter as much because the characters were archetypes. You knew what the characters were like after a few scenes.

In second case, everything falls apart if there are no strong characters keeping the story together. Unfortunately Anakin and Obi-Wan weren't.

edit:
*Mark Hamill is also doing a good job, I've always thought. And Harrison Ford plays the same character he plays in almost every movie, and he seems to have met some success doing that.

I don't see how the prequels aren't incredibly easy to follow. There's arguably more going on in them but the plot is very simple and straightforward.

Honestly, and I'm not saying this to deflect or to be rude, but if you don't understand 21st century gender politics in media at this point, the burden is on you to educate yourself. As Gamergate has shown, no amount of Internet shit slinging is going to help. Pick up a book or take a class if it honestly interests you. Having me unpack it for you would be a waste of both our time. That said, the long and short of it in this very specific situation is this. Here's Joss's exact comment:

...and I'm too busy wishing this clip wasn't 70's era sexist. She's a stiff, he's a life-force - really? Still?

Nowhere here does he use the words "horrible" or "reprehensible". He's complaining about the use of a tired and sexist trope in a modern film.

The argument that "Well, some people are actually like this!" Or "What, we can't have prude, stiff women playing opposite virile young men in films anymore?" Is functionally no different than saying, "This movie isn't antisemitic, it's just saying THIS Jew is greedy" or "what, we can't depict black people as lazy anymore?"

At best, Jurassic World's use of the trope is tired and lazy, at worst, disappointingly
sexist. You very rightly identified Star Wars as being guilty of the same trope. It's a relic of the 70s that deserves to stay there. Thankfully from the little info that's out there, JJ Abrams seems to know what's up.

I'm simply saying I don't see the problem with it. I don't think it paints either sex in any kind of particular or negative light and I wasn't saying the Star Wars scene is bad, just similar. It's a more traditional way of writing, I guess? And it's interesting coming from Whedon; hypocritical, even.

Uhh, I disagree that it's a different voice saying "My sister has it". That's definitely Hamill's voice.

Anyone else notice that 95% of the shots of Finn so far have him breathing realllly heavily lol

They seem to be particualrly dramatic moment, some he's in a desert, and seems to be on the run. No surprise. Also, they're like 3 seconds of footage.
