I hate Episode 2 so much

DAT FLOATING CHRISTOPHER LEE HEAD!!!

Ughhh ..... glad to see they got those dudes from "The Raid" for this one.

Everything seems to be on the right track here.

Huh? I find this incredibly hard to believe.

I do know that the OT used a lot of painted backgrounds for scenes. Like the bit where luke gets his hand cut off. The entire background is a flat angled floor.

Even the Geonosis battle being derided these past few pages had plenty of practical effects.

It's just that the compositing blows, the digital cameras were not ready for prime time, and the CGI that they did use bring the whole thing down.

Yeah it's definitely larger than a standard Star Destroyer, though I always though the Executor was the only Super Star Destroyer the Empire had. I guess it was just the flagship.

In the EU there are actually even two Executors, one was left on Coruscant as a backup.

Among other names Executor-class SSDs mentioned in the EU and elsewhere:

Lusankya, Executor's sister ship was Palpatine's personal evacuation craft on Coruscant.
Guardian was the flagship of the Coruscant defense fleet.
Terror
Vengeance
Reaper
Intimidator
Night Hammer

Among several un-named SSDs mentioned in passing. After the fall of the empire basically every mid level warlord in the galaxy had an SSD.

Then there are the next gen SSDs like the Eclipse-class and Sovereign-class That were in production when the Empire fell, and the intermediate star dreadnought classes Mandator and Bellator.

Episode 1 is the most boring movie, but Episode 2 is probably the shittiest.

I think everyone agrees that EP3 is the best one of the three.

I think they're darn near equally bad in their own ways. Attack of the Clones might be a little worse than the other two, but it also has the only space battle in the prequels that I don't outright hate.

I'm kind of fond of TPM in a weird way. It was the first Star Wars film I saw in theaters and I don't really remember loving it like I did the OT, but I didn't really cultivate the awareness of what made it so bad until later. Even now I can sit through it and mostly enjoy what I'm seeing. I have no such feelings for Episode II. That movie was a chore to sit through the first time I saw it and every time I've seen it since. There are cool bits here and there, but it's never enough and comes in such concentrated doses as to feel more like begrudged pandering than what the movie actually set out to do.

Episode III is definitely the best of the bunch and for the most part I find it the superior film to Return of the Jedi, except for RotJ's space battle and climax, which were admittedly very well done.

I like Episode I most of the prequels. It at least was it's own movie. II is easily the worst though.

Well, it's less which one is "best", but rather which one is the least awful.

Anyway, Episode 3 will forever be an important part of interweb culture due to this nugget:

e6a.jpg

The tantrums before that are way worse, but that gets extra points for being used to further ruin Return of the Jedi.
"I'm gonna go listen to Linkin Park... I mean from my point of view the Jedi are evil!" Ugh.

Essentially.

On that note, there's a subtly more contemporary sound to this specific trailer arrangement. While it's basically Binary Sunset mashed up with Yoda and the Force, things like that solitary piano note at 32 seconds and the chord change at around 48 seconds hint at a slightly widened musical paradigm. I say hint as it still leaves me none the wiser about whether this sensibility will extend to the film proper.

it's exciting that the new jw stuff we've heard just between these two trailers is pretty different from the prequel scores. definitely more contemporary sound as you said, particularly that single piano note with the reverb. funny how so brief a moment can stand out as new. and that chord change at :48 is actually the same chord change that is the hallmark of the force theme we know but it doesn;t have the force theme played over it in this instance (clever jw being reductive).

but yeah i think jj's brisk style of direction is going to bring out the best in jw's music. the prequels didn;t much do his scores justice imo. furthermore it'll be interesting to see how his score adapts to rian johnson in episode 8. fingers crossed we get jw to score all the way through episode 9 ( the guy is getting old after all).

Episode 3 is the most entertaining of the prequels, but the main problem I have with it is none of the major events feel natural or earned, it's just a checklist of things that have to happen because we're on the last prequel and neither of the last two films had proper development.

I totally agree. It really was the best of the prequels.

The best thing that came out of the prequals is the Clone wars TV series. Anikan was actually likable and had depth to his character. It makes his fall and his turning to the darkside actually kinda heartbreaking.

In my head the Star wars is listed in this order:

Episode 1
Clone wars TV show
Episode 4
Episode 5
Episode 6

Given a choice I'd watch Episode I. The Pod Race is still fun to watch and Liam Neeson is ok in it.

Episode 2 is the worst movie. It's dogshit.

Episode 3 is not as bad technically but it was the biggest failure. There's five movies worth of build to so many important scenes and they're all botched except for maybe a minute of Order 66.

ETA: I didn't mean to imply that Episode 3 only botched scenes with buildup from previous movies. It also had terrible execution of nearly everything else, especially anything involving General Grievous.

I want one of those. I NEED one of those. If they don't make a fully working replica for sale that isn't a shitty limited toy it'll be the biggest missed opportunity in robot toy selling since Short Circuit 2. I mean for chrissakes, the movie was about selling miniature toy versions of a really cool robot.. yet they never made actual toys that matched the ones in the movie. I hope whoever made the decision to not sell toy Johnny 5's got fired for that blunder.

But I digest.

To this day I still want a J5.

I think Episode 1 is the best of the three prequels. It gave us the best 3 things that came from the prequel experience:

1. Duel of the Fates theme
2. Qui Gon & Obi Wan vs Darth Maul fight
3. Weird Al's Star Wars song

Episode 1's plot is paced decently with clear rising action, climax, denouement, and works as a stand-alone story.
I used to think Episode 3 was better for a while, but Anakin's nonsensical & sudden jump into evil mode just ruins the whole thing.
And let's just agree to ignore Episode 2.

Does anyone think it would be corny if they cloned luke using his cut off hand?

It happened in the books in a trilogy. It just sprouted in my thoughts that what if the helmet sith was a Sith luke. lol

ep 1 is my favourite of the 3, 3rd being a close 2nd.

I enjoy both of them.

2 I only like a few scenes, like the whole jango/obi fight.

The fight makes Obi Wan and Qui Gon look really dumb though, they could easily kill maul so many times and they just don't, Then Maul looks like an idiot when obi wan kills him in a really dumb way.

The entire end is just a mess with the four separate storylines all together and then it also has a kid that can't act and so much jar jar.

And you have to mention midichlorians.

I think 2 is worse but not by too much with 3 being the best but not by much. .

Can anybody help me out with this? The Star Wars teaser on YouTube filled my whole 3440x1440 screen, so I guess it was 2.35:1 format, seeing it has black bars when not in full screen mode. But other trailers with black bars aren't displayed on the whole screen? What's up with that? How can I check which videos will display in full, in which ones won't?

compared to the size of the falcon in that shot, how on earth would you ever construct that star destroyer within a lifetime? Or even, how would you create and transport one (!) of it's metal parts, that by itself is bigger than an entire spaceship.

Oh god and now I'm thinking about the Death Star.

Star Wars, you're so silly!

I still love that shot though

That ball droid. Does that mean that R2-D2 and C3PO are going to be phased out in these new films. It was always common belief that the 2 droids were meant to be the constant voice in all the films as the principal characters fell in an out of rotation.

I saw Star Wars when it was first released - I was about six or seven. It was amazing at the time. The sort of spectacle that just hadn't been seen before.
By the time ROTJ came out I was twelve or thirteen. Although I enjoyed it I was already getting a feeling that the Ewoks were the sort of awful cutesy marketing tool to sell toys to younger kids.

By the time TPM came about I was looking forward to the prequels as the idea kindled a kind of nostalgia and fondness for the old films. I did expect to feel like the films would be predominantly aimed at a new generation of youngsters but I still expected the standards to be high enough to offer appeal to adults too.

The actual handling of the three prequels ended up making them feel almost like a necessary chore. By the end of ROTS I was actually glad it was the end of it all.

TPM features bad dialogue and poor, stilted acting. It has a really cool villain who is woefully underused. It has far too much Jar Jar Binks and feels like 'Star Wars goes cute to sell you stuff' quite often.

AOTC felt long. Too long. It was cool to see more Jedi but ultimately they felt wasted like Maul was in TPM.
The dialogue was embarrassingly bad in places and the acting suffered hugely as a consequence. The direction was lacklustre managing to make plot development sections feel long and slow and action sections poorly staged and paced. Every time a scene or sequence did show some promise you could be sure the next one would bring you down with a crash.
Again, much of it felt like a vehicle for merchandising.
That section in the iron works thing on Geonosis felt like it was designed to make it easy to fit into a video game.

ROTS was probably the best of a bad bunch but only because you knew the dark and twisty stuff was going to unfold.
The dialogue was risible at times and much of the acting was dreadful.
Ian McDiarmid went off the 'UNLIMITED PANTOMIME' scale with Palpatine. Even James Earl Jones managed to sound hammier than Bavarian delicatessen just saying 'No-o-o-o-o-o!'
What should have been a fantastic climax was ruined by a lightsaber fight that was so frantic it looked like two people waving fluorescent light bulbs at each other in fast forward about 70% of the time. It also had any gravitas sucked out of it by some of the most awkward dialogue written. Even Ewan McGregor couldn't make it sound good - what chance did Hayden 'At least I can look sulky' Christensen ever stand?

I'm not one to get pissed off at George Lucas because he trampled on my childhood or any hyper-emotional nonsense like that.
I don't view Star Wars as a special flower that can't be altered or tampered with in any way.
I was expecting the prequels to be aimed at the current generation of youngsters.

I wasn't expecting them to be what they eventually turned out to be. Badly conceived and crafted films.

I hope Episode 7 is at least a decent film, no matter what changes are made to the tone or style of the original films, I just want it to be a decent example of film making.

The first SW films I ever watched were Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi back to back at my friend's house when I was five. I thought it was really cool, but I preferred Indiana Jones.

The first SW film I watched when I was old enough to appreciate it was Attack of the Clones.

I didn't go back to SW after that one. Caught some on TV here and there, but never in full.

Keep in mind - they shot it on 1080p cameras. It'll never be any more hi-def than that.

Isn't the picture actually sub-1080p since they didn't use anamorphic lenses?

I don't think it was, though. And even if it was - it's still ostensibly a live-action film. The live-action bits can't go over 1080p. And even then - the film's in 2.35, so it's not even 1080 lines/pixels. I believe it's 800, isn't it?

All your live action elements are capped at 800 pixels tall, maximum, in that case.

(someone come in here and school me on this! I can't be doing all that great a job of describing this)

Ah yes, 800 lines. Lucas' desire for advanced technology actually means AOTC will age the worst, LOL.

I watched the old trilogy prior to episode 1 in theaters when I was 9 (jesus....)

Preferred Indy too but we all saw how that turned out.....

Showed this trailer to my four year old nephew and the first thing he said after was "Why is there a black Star Wars?" referring to Boyega.

I was kinda struck dumb but gathered myself enough to reply "Because everyone can be a Star Wars".

White dude/White nephew btw.

You should Lando and Mace Windu to him.
(Can't think of any other non-white in SW films though.)

I would be more surprised if we ever see asians in Star Wars, I guess having east asians would make SW's connection to wuxia/samarai films too obvious.

Edit: outside of asian like aliens obviously

I still don't get the title for episode 2 I mean Attack of The Clones? It makes them sound like clones are enemies in the film but they Republic army and the actual clones don't pop in til near the end. The rest titles in the saga actually make sense but attack of clones always stood out to me it like they had issues titling the film

All three are bad films, but Episode I somehow emerges as the best of the bunch. Most natural dialogue and performances, most resemblance to the OT in shot composition and photography, most tangible model work and sets, most coherent plot. At least you can identify it as the corrupted offspring of the OT- all the bad habits that coagulated by the time of RotJ are present and amplified tenfold. "Inconsequential" is the word I would use to sum up Episode I.

Episode III does a decent job of fooling you into thinking it's the best. The ships are more recognizable. It moves along at a fair clip. A couple of its individual scenes with Palpatine are quite good. But its overall plot and character missteps are markedly more critical and illogical. It has the best story, sure, but in the years following the RotJ novelization we didn't really think you could fuck up "Anakin turns bad and fights Obi Wan on a volcano" like they did here. They had an absolute GIFT of a plot to work with and squandered it- I find that to be more unforgivable than a thousand Jar Jars.

I'm not sure whether the SSD is CGI or a composited model- either way, it looks great.

Yeah, it's clearly the result of trying to mimic The Empire Strikes Back title and reference the Clone Wars at the same time, but just comes off sounding awkward and forced.

It's funny to think that he probably considered "The Clones Attack!" as a title, which would have been even cornier.
