The movie might end up being a steaming pile of shit (I doubt it but hey) but it's so funny how the internet in general is frothing at the mouth to turn on Marvel stuff. The honeymoon period is indeed over

Just wait to watch the movie to form your opinion. Lots of reviews are positive while a few are negative. Happens with every big summer movie. Lots of people are just waiting for Marvel to fail and will just not give this movie a chance. Esp the band of Mcu haters in neogaf. They're like clockwork. Its become so toxic visiting movie threads on neogaf that i just ignore them. Look at the jurassic world thread. Or the batman vs superman thread. Or the terminator gynesys thread (which i admit does look bad haha) Even regular film threads are full of elists annoyances. Then there are the posters chiming in that xmen dofp is god tier when its merely good tier and then proceeds to use that as some metric against marvel movies. Its a laughable comparison when xmen dofp becomes an anticlimatic mess at the third act. And i say that as an xmen stan. You see it in every marvel thread.

qft.

Seriously though, very excited for that film. People getting hyped over Ultron, but DofP decimated the first Avengers, and Apocalypse could be even better with an even better cast joining again. Shit's gonna be huge.

Can't wait for more JLaw Mystique.

(Apocalypse seems like a decidedly worse cast than DOFP, Isaac notwithstanding)

To those who have seen the movie, does Ultron sound like this in what you saw?

Yeah, I was wondering this too -- what does his voice sound like? Machine, synthy filters or pure Spader voice?

I'll be very frank in saying I don't really care about anyone else's impressions before I've seen the film. Hence why I don't ask people who have seen it "well what was ____ like?". I'll find out what ___ was like when I see the film, and perhaps then we'll talk about our respective views of ___.
It seems useless to me to rely on one person's opinion of a film you haven't seen, to get information. Sure if an aggregate of reviews like RT are all negative, you can infer that the film is likely bad, but you can only ever know by your own reaction, preferably an uninfluenced one.

There is a tendency for people to not only ask for other specific opinions of something they haven't seen yet, but worse to absorb said opinion as their own, before they've ever seen the work in question. My brother does this all the time, he absorbs someone else's opinion, usually out of context, so that when you ask him to elaborate on something, he has no real clue what to say.

Watched this last night at a midnight screening. I'm not that heavily invested in the MCU fandom (though I love the concept, that's why I'm staying), but the audience was. I found the movie to be underwhelming at times, but I enjoyed it overall. I enjoyed the first movie more than AoU.

However, everyone else, including my friends who were into the Marvel fandom (and subsequently, slash fandom), enjoyed it immensely (more so than the first movie). The audience went wild several times.

God forbid you ask for impressions on things before you try them. You can always comeback afterwards and say whether you agree or disagree. Don't see much harm in it unless you fall into confirmation bias.

Impressions are fine as a "did you like it?" or if you're asking a lot of people, generally. I just find going too specific causes some issues if you overly concentrate on one or two people's view.

It admittedly doesn't help that despite the number of positive reviews we have a bad habit of veering to and obsessing over the negative ones.

It's the nature of people. If you were pessimistic, it's more likely you'll cling to negativity. If you were optimistic, a handful of bad reviews can poke holes in the hype balloon. I'm hoping it settles above 85% with a 7.5+ rating but even settling where it is would be pretty solid, depending on your expectations.

In this very thread someone said "reminded me of Spider-Man 3, but vastly better" (referring it seems to the "overstuffed" feeling a lot of impressions are saying), and someone only zeroed in on "reminded me of Spider-Man" like "uh oh, must be bad!".

Man, if the Ultron thing is true, I hope Cross, Zemo and Dormammu save us.
Everyone else is saying Ultron's pretty on-point, so I guess we shouldn't worry too much. The best thing we can do is formulate our own opinions when we see the movie. But as of right now, there's more vouching for Ultron than against him.

Will have seen it by this time tomorrow, having read some impressions of it (in addition to my so-so thoughts on the first movie) my expectations are actually low - however for $4 it's still worth seeing at the cinema (a normal movie ticket costs $21 here, I got my ticket super cheap due to a deal with an internet provider selling cheap tickets - should have really cost me $11 - but I had $7 left on an old gift card).

Does Hawkeye steal the show as rumored?

i went from not really caring abou him in AV1 to enjoying him a lot in this movie, but yes he is quite important in the movie in many aspects!

Spoilered it in case people want complete blackouts

Ultron is my main concern, I really love villains and how they're shown. Ultron in the trailers seems fucking amazing so I hope they keep the intimidation factor at maximum.

Is it legit? Is it good?
And can't decide whether I should listen now, or stay strong until i have seen the movie.

It has a more traditional heroic feel than other Marvel soundtracks. Surely Elfman's doing. And it's filled to the brim with references to character and team themes. This is the first time a Marvel movie has used leitmotifs in a really forward manner.

The main composer Brian Tyler said long ago when he was first announced as the composer that he was going for a John Williams influence, particularly Star Wars and Raiders of the Lost Ark. Hence the heavy leifmotifs and heroic feel.

Expect any good aspects of the score to be attributed only to Elfman, though (like Wright for Ant-Man).

Just got back from the theatres. And let me get this out of the way:

Avengers 1 >>> AoU

If you have any specific questions, just ask. I'll do my best to avoid spoilers.

3.5/5

How was Ultron? Without any spoiler pl0x.

Hmm... in one word, serviceable. Cool character, but not the best Marvel villain compared to what's been shown thus far. Couple of great lines, but that's about it.

I'm interested in what you thought made it worse than the first.

Felt really disjointed. In Avengers 1, the characters were all given time to develop, and the story built up to a great climax with the Battle of New York. In AoU, it feels like a couple of battle scenes, mixed in with character back-stories and motivation explanations.

I'm no film major, so as a "common movie-goer", it was good for a night-out, but not a must-see.

I wrote that post before listening to the whole thing. There are some parts that have distinct showings of Elfman's style, and plenty that are clearly Tyler's. Iron Man's theme in particular never stops peeking in to almost every segment.

Who was your favorite new character? Did Hawkeye steal the film?

New characters? Just in case, I'll put in the spoiler tag.
Probably The Vision and Wanda (Scarlet Witch), both for being different to what we already have. Also, DoFP Quicksilver >> AoU Quicksilver.

As for Hawkeye (again, just in case)
he doesn't "steal" the film the same way Hulk did in Avengers 1, but I'd say he's the MVP this time around.
