So wait, question:
Are some of the characters only sidequest only? Or are they only temporary guest characters?
From what I saw from 2 diferent streamers.
Jhon Doe unlocked Erina before chap 6 while doing side mission.
Narumi is at chapter 8, he got Lao first before Erina so I guess Lao is locked behind story quest while Erina is isn't.
Also some videos presentation showed that you had to do some missions to be able to get more companions but they didn't detailed it.
So far for Doug, he is still a temprary guest I saw in Jhon stream.

I'm only specualtating for Narumi case because I didn't watched him from the begining while in the contrary I'm following Jhon from the start.

I don't know but I was sad when Jhon doe switched on twitch.

it is related to why characters are robots

Its the fuel/energy source neo la runs off of, as well as the skells.

It works like Avatar right? I'm guessing the rescue missions work where you get/activate the bodies and that lets the people transfer into them.

So have we figured out what triggers pilot mode? Iirc, the treehouse streamer said he couldn't control when it happens, but from watching streamers, it seems to happen after using a skill.

The presentation said its a random chance of happening and not really something the player can trigger at will.

It seems every human in NLA is actually a host robot, being remotely controlled from the Life Units. Think how Surrogate, Avatar, and even Ghost in the Shell had characters control their "bodies" through a safe place.

Wait, so if you fall of the map, is your doll gone for good? i7gg fell off and the doll is nowhere in sight.
edit: There's still a doll fuel bar, so maybe it was left where he fell off, and you respawn at the last field location?

I think I know where this is going...
The surrogate bodies will break, eventually and we're going to be left without them. Your character seems entirely unaware of their state, which makes them a total oddity.
Late game spoiler suspicions:
Would be the least bit surprised if you're not even a human with a body.

I think this all makes the aliens destroying the Life a REAL cause for concern lol

one/multiple people in your party are actually real humans, or they are only robots, with no human controlling them.
edit: ending prediction:
one of your party members gets fataly wounded,a nd someone says "don't worry, we can just repair her." and then you walk closer and see that she is spilling blood all over the place as she looks at you with a sorrowful look.
