Playtonic unveils Yooka-Laylee (Banjo Kazooie successor) [Kickstarter LIVE - Funded]

Hi chaps. Andy from Playtonic here.

Your assessment is correct - what you see today is the result of just three months work (honestly, it's amazing how fast this has progressed) and most of it will be unrecognizable compared to the final product - in a good way.

We focused on nailing the characters and tone the best we could in that time. The environment is very much a 'sandbox' at this point, though the themes are representative of what we're going for.

In an ideal world we'd have filled that jungle with tons of quirky characters, dazzling collectibles and interesting enemies but... time.

I've only been here a few months and I'm a Rare outsider and honestly, these guys are going to nail this. They create this stuff in their sleep. If I wasn't here, I'd be backing lots of cash :)

Sounds good to me. Best of luck to all of you in your endeavors!

You're basing all this off of like a minute of veeeery early footage and like ten seconds of two different tunes?

What.
When I saw Mighty No. 9 gameplay for the first time, I though it looked pretty bad. But I thought to myself: hey, they're gonna make it much better. Boy, was I wrong.

Kickstarter is always a gamble so it's obvious people are being overly cautious and pessimistic. This is where Playtonic has the chance to come out and explain what we're seeing, to remove those suspicions. If the level in the gameplay is supposed to represent what we'll be seeing in the final product (which I doubt, but again how can you know for certain?), you bet I'd be a bit hard to put money on this.

I never played the BK games, so the minor pandering and nostalgia at work here doesn't necesarily work on me but I sure as hell would like to play a solid 3D platformer again. It would certainly make me feel much more at ease if Playtonic cleared up a couple of things first and that there's more to this whole thing than just trying to mimic games that are now almost 20 years old.

Edit: @Espio -- And there you have it. Much appreciated! :)

Also, I'll never get Gafs love for WW, it's great but "legendary" ehh.

King_Cobra.jpg

Best "load screens" in the entire series, best graphical style by a large margin, some of the strongest characters and personalities in the series, excellent update to the battle mechanics with parry and being able to pick up enemy weapons, well-designed dungeons even if there were fewer than usual, best depiction of Ganondorf in the series, best Zelda in the series, the best portrayal of Link in the series since he had to WORK for hsi triforce whereas most of the other Links were given it straight away, handles sidequests in the best way(Yes even better than Majora's Mask since Wind Waker isn't tethered to a time system), some of the best gadgets and items in the series, such as the grappling hook and the deku leaf, was the first game to make the iron boots WORK, some of the best music in the series, figurine gallery, etc etc etc

Any minor imperfections that were perceived before were completely extinguished with the HD re-release. Of course you are free to dislike the game, but please spare us your arguments for why the game is supposedly not a masterpiece.

The Triforce Quest was great, provided you started on it well before the game actually forces you to start doing it. If you're efficient, you can have all but two of the shards/charts by the time you finish the Wind Temple. Just a FYI, but King of Red Lions mentions the triforce well before you beat the Wind Temple... he mentions it as soon as you leave Hyrule for the second time, which was after the second forsaken fortress visit. That is actually the best time to start on the quest, not after Wind Temple. Whilst exploring for the charts and shards you will likely find most if not all of the Heart Pieces. The game really is wonderfully designed.

I wasn't saying the game wasn't a masterpiece, just that I don't understand why Gaf fixates over it, to me it's great, just like every other game in the series. Honestly, and this is not directed at you, but feel like some people get too fixated on the surface changes and like the game solely because of that.

Also not to get off topic, but I don't get the whole "best personalities" thing. All the characters with the except of Ganon always act the same way, because they're in everything but their placement in time, the same people.

This is awesome, though I still feel Yooka is a bit plain, maybe some shorts or something would help.

Hi Andy,

Game is shaping up well. Also props for a username of one of the few good Sonic characters.

If you put clothes on them, that'd be too 90s for me lol. Don't want them that anthromorphic, sometimes just an animal is alright. It's not like a chameleon has multi-coloured eyes or head flippers or a bat is purple and has a red nose, so they're still identifiable.

This should be about mimicking the old games in the same way Pillars of Eternity was about creating an Infinity Engine game for a new generation. That's the whole point.

I won't be satisfied until everything in this game has a pair of sneakers and a baseball cap. They aren't 90s enough I tells ya!

And trust us, we have plans to ensure that Kirkhope-Wise-Burke is a successful collaboration ;)

I'd like a Burke tease at some point too. Wise and Kirkhope are great and have the nostalgia factor but he doesn't deserve to go under the radar either. Kameo's OST was really cool.

Zelda was at her best in Wind Waker, mostly when she was in her pirate form, sure, but she redeemed herself again at the end. Not even in Ocarina was Zelda that involved in the battle. the extra expressiveness of the toon style really makes Link, who is a silent protagonist, stick out more, not to mention all the emotional baggage he has to bear with his sister and grandma. I will admit that Tingle received a change for the worse, though.

Would kinda suck for this game if a new BK actually got announced.

It'd be great actually. I welcome more adventuring animal duos rather than all the shooty bang bangs everywhere.

So yes.. I'm backing the lizard and bat, but I also truly hope we see the return of bear and bird in a proper big release soon too.

There's a market for both games IMO, no reason to only have one out. We used to have 3D platform games everywhere at one point.

Tetra isn't really Zelda, in that they're kinda treated as two different people by Nintendo similary to Sheik and Zelda, and even then she did help in OOT, and in TP, and basically every game to some form, and she's always had the same personality, only influenced in a slightly different manner due to the particular story of each game. Finally, as for Link, silent protagonist or not, he's always had a personality, and it's always been the same, the difference in WW is simply that it's further illustrated by the art style. Basically what I was trying to say was that they don't really change that much between games, because lore or not Nintendo doesn't really pay that much attention to the multiple people idea, it's just Link, Zelda, and Ganon, and whoever else they want to throw in a game.

essentially, saying they got new personalities is weird, they act a bit differently due to how each plot is structed, but they still have like set character traits and what not.

Well, a new BK could be cool, but I just fear that it would kinda drown this out.
I don't see it happening (at least anytime soon). The Playtonic guys are close with the people who are still at Rare. I don't think either of them would want to step on the other's toes.
Well hopefully, I'd hate to see all this hard work just be overshadowed.
