Are you in the US? The 980 is in the $500+ range the 970 should be no where near that?

You can wait if you want to see what AMD has to offer and if it lives up the hype and the 3XX line doesn't end up being filled with rebadges and where exactly NVIDIA is going since supposedly they're not going to be introducing much this year aside from a Ti or two if the 960Ti talk ends up actually being true though there's been nothing said about it in months where we know a 980TI is incoming. The 660Ti might have bit more life left to it but the 970 is much more capable from what I've read, it's around two times more capable.
If you plan on going above 1080p any time soon the 980 would probably be a better card to go with if you stick with NVIDIA. The 980 is ~20% faster but also doesn't suffer from the gimped chunk of memory. EVGA still does their step up program so there's that to consider if the 980Ti or whatever comes out soonish, not sure what kind of discount that would lead to though.
