Splatoon Direct - 7th May 2015

It's quite shocking to hear about the price in the US.

I got the special edition with the Squid amiibo and the T-shirt for £40

I don't even understand... they give you a pre-order price incentive for the digital version. But they pack an Amiibo exclusively with a physical special edition?

Just messed up.

I agree. Amiibo locked content is much worse than the game being released without the ability to play with friends.

What's really ridiculous is that nearly a month out from launch Nintendo hasn't allocated enough inventory for Amazon's site to not say "Currently unavailable". It's obviously going to be business as usual with the lack of availability for these Amiibo.

Except it's just a bunch of minor inconsequential challenges and a few exclusive gear items.

And you can play with friends.

What the fuck, you guys get a shirt, too? I mean, it's not that great, but I'd totally grab it with a SE or something. I'll never understand...

Not everyone cares about amiibos (Even if their stock makes it seem like everyone on the planet wants the damn things).

nah. the game's done. they've said for a while now that they want to keep peoples interest over time and with Splatoon they try a new way of doing that. with the festivals etc. it's pretty clear that this was a very concious decision.

It's not about the festival. It's about the fact that they're bringing weapons, maps, game modes and even a netcode patch after lauch.

First time I see a game announcing a netcode patch before launching and without any beta done.

Wait, you can't play online with your friends at launch? Is that just 4v4 with just friends or can I straight up not party up with my friend and play against people?

Yep, especially for a game like this. Having it digitally always ready to play for a very nice price sounds better to me than paying €50+ for an additional amiibo I could get anyway at a later date.

You can play with friends at launch, but you can't choose teams/parties. Teams are shuffled randomly every match so you can't choose if you're playing with or against them.

The ability to form teams with friends comes in an August update

I was meh for this game but now I'm buying it for sure. Now I need to buy a wii u pro controller and pre order at gamestop (sigh) to get the mii outfits, might even buy the amiibo.
Nintendo forever making me use a large amount of money at once :(.

Every player has an individual Wii U, yes.

I so want this game to succeed, but 8 WiiU's pretty much ruins the idea of a Splatoon party at my house. I could maybe get 4 together but I bet I'm the minority.

Splatoon will not become the next Mario Kart or Smash Bros without better local support IMO.
This is not the Nintendo way.

I don't care about amiibos myself (I care about the content stupidly hidden behind them) but it's backwards to advance towards digital distribution and at the same time not give digital buyers an equal opportunity to get all the shit.

A digital buyer that wants the exclusive amiibo will have to buy the digital version and the special edition, and then sell the physical version. It is messed up.

You can't. It's an exclusive one.

Or pay out of the ass in the secondary market.

Haha, I was totally ready to shit on this game halfway through this direct about it having no content, then all the free dlc stuff dropped. Tons of maps luckily since 5 starting maps is really meager and I'm glad more gamemodes got confirmed. I do like how they try to release all the content over time to try and keep the game fresh over an extended period of time, that way trying to keep the player count high all over the summer. The only weird thing is saving the true co-op battles and friend lobbies for august. I'm assuming that's when the planned free content updates stop and Splatoon needs a different hook to keep it fresh, but it's still a curious omission.

I'm just glad Splatoon is (eventually) going to be a full shooter experience, hype reinforced.

Not exactly sure what you mean by that.

I'm hoping they announce a slew of good stuff, but I don't see that happening.

what he means is before e3 last year we had no idea that

Star fox
Kirby and the rainbow curse
Caiptain toad
Mario Maker
Devils Third
Splatoon
Mario Party 10
Mario vs. Donkey Kong: Tipping Stars

where even coming to wii u nintendo keeps things very close to there chest. Iwata also said that we dont no everything that is coming to wii u this year yet.

Thanks. That's kinda rough. Really getting the feeling this game needed at least another month of development.

AFAIK, you can play online with friends, but not create your own teams until August?

I didn't get the impression that the game would facilitate playing with friends until August. They didn't specify exactly how you and your friend would end up in the same group.

I don't think it's meant to.

Mario Kart 8 and Smash have local all down.
Splatoon is meant to dominate the online

Have they said what controls are supported for this game? Please let me be able to use a classic controller or wiimote/nunchuk.

Oh. So the complaints about the game being incomplete until August are even sillier than I thought.

That is one off the issues I have with content locked behind amiibos.

Yeah they did. You just go to your friends list and choose join game.

Its interesting how they mentioned "like the Wii U Pro Controller" when saying that you'd need another controller.

Wonder if local has Wiimote + Nunchuck support.

It's a primarily online-based game, of course there's going to be more online focus than local focus. They could stand to add 2v2s to dojo mode though.

Eh, I am glad Splatoon is focused on online play. Not being heavy on local support doesn't kill its chances of being the next MK/Smash at all.

Of course, more local multi player options would have been welcomed. Variety is (almost) always a good thing.

Amazon didn't go up yet.

The game will have a full single player campaign, 2 online modes, one local mp mode and 5+5 maps at launch and immediately after. Plus a lot of cool gear and weapons. Especially the sub and special weapons that seem extremely fun. Then it will have weekly content updates. Then more online modes and options. All free. I'm sorry but I rather take this than a delay for August. Until august I will finish the SP and level my squid to the appropriate level, including the super snail that will allow me to her whatever clothes I want. See you complainers in August I guess.

Edit: plus arcade games for the waiting time.

Oh. So the complaints about the game being incomplete until August are even sillier than I thought.

You can put it this way: everything we knew about Splatoon before the direct is arriving at May 29th. The new post-release content after that will then be released gradually.

Let's talk about how dumb the online implementation of maps is to make sure people get tired of the game.

You can only play on 2 maps till it is refreshed after 4 hours. Basically, a normal session of playing 1-2 hours doesn't even guarantee that you will get to play on all the maps (only 5 at launch cause the others are more "technical"). Are they trying to get people to stop playing?

Absolutely this. Gonna spend all that time making my Inkling Kawaii

Yeah this seems dumb too. I misheard it as one hour, which made sense. But four hours? How am I not gonna get bored of two maps for four hours?

I'd say they're trying to ease people into the game for the long haul, rather than stop people playing

Yeah, that sounds perfectly fine to me. More content being added gradually will keep things fresh.

Worst part is that we are stuck with randoms until August

Good part is that they are actually introducing it

Feels like the full game will arrive in August. By then everything will be available and people should be by level 10

Glad there are more modes and that we will keep getting more free updates and events throughout the game's life

The shirt is available if you buy it from the Nintendo UK store. So most of Europe is in the same position as you are.

I'm glad they're not charging for the new maps. Less content at launch with free dlc is much better than fracturing the community with paid maps in the future (maps that were already built anyways, but released after the fact). With how few maps there are, I may actually be able to learn them as well as others in my very limited play time.
