Im eagerly awaiting the intense fanrart inksplosion that will happen once it's actually out. That's AMAZING.

Why can't you play any other modes on unranked? This seems really weird. Shouldn't you be able to play any gamemode online without having to worry about your stats? How do you even train for a new gamemode then?

But I guess the ranking doesn't matter that much anyway.

I wonder if stats will work for custom friend battles that come out in August.

I just want to add that having already played the game a bit, the gyro controls work amazingly!
I am wondering where the people who complain about it have played a 3rd person shooter with gyro aiming.

1st person gyro aiming is really annoying, but can't think of a game that does it 3rd person?

well personal preference all the way but I'd recommend trying them out again. if "waving a controller around" is what you have in your mind then you haven't mastered the right stick/gyro combination yet. now I'm just going to assume that the right stick can move in all directions because fuck, that'd be really weird if not. but yeah, instead of waving the controller around use the right stick for large movements and the gyro for fine tuning and accuracy. if you're doing it properly you'll only be slightly moving your wrists.

Honestly, I appreciate the concern, but it's just personal preference. 'Waving them around' is more my personal dislike edging into hyperbole than an accurate description. I'm just more comfortable and far better with twin sticks than gyro controls. It's the perfect balance between ease of use and accuracy for me.

I find gyro controls both less pleasent and less accurate, add in how bloody uncomfortable I find the Gamepad on top of that, and it's the perfect experience ruining storm for me, personally.

Honestly, if they'd gone full motion controls, and included Wiimote support, I'd be fine. It's less comfortable for long periods, and harder to use where I play than a normal controller, but not hugely, and I'm if anything slightly better with it than a standard pad when it comes to shooters, which makes up for any downsides. But yeah, Gamepad/3DS/Sixaxis gyro aiming is nothing but a hinderance for me, every single time I've tried to use it.

A timed server stress test as a demo basically? Launching with 5 maps? Nice that DLC is free though. Also, outside of this Direct and NOA tweets, the Splatoon "ad campaign" here will consist of a single, lame commercial done by the usual morons and hacks at Leo Burnett, an ad agency so consistently off the mark they probably couldn't make a proper ad for Meow Mix if their lives depended on it yet they are still paid to market Nintendo's products in the U.S. never mind they're also the same idiots who made the confusing and stupid Wii U dubstep TV spots which futher contributed towards the launch being a disaster. The commercial for Splatoon will then be aired about once every 3 hours on Nick and Cartoon Network. This will then cause my co-worker who owns a Wii U to tell me something along the lines of, "Hey our kids saw Splatoon at the store. They didn't even know about Splatoon until now because they say they haven't seen any ads for it so far on Nick and Cartoon Network" which is exactly what he said to me last year except replace Splatoon with Mario Kart 8.

This game sounds like it will be great in 3-4 months.

I guess that's good because now I really have no desire to buy it day one.

hey man, no worries. I'm a pretty literal person so I missed the hyperbole ;p

Well, MK8 has sold over 5 million copies, so hopefully Spaltoon will be so lucky ;)

To all people who are on the fence about gyro aiming in 3rd person:

1. run Nintendoland
2. select Metroid Blast
3. ...
4. enjoy the greatness that is gyro aiming

Yeah, honestly, I get that 5 is a low end number, but if they're well designed and everything, I really don't think it'll be a problem. They've said more maps are coming by June (if I heard/understood correctly), so newer maps are going to come soon. As long as the maps are good, that part doesn't bother me.
I don't remember hearing anything about June specifically but the video said wed be getting the content updates through summer 2015. That's 9 additional maps through July or august.

I wouldn't fuss too much about gyro controls. It's been confirmed in multiple places that they're optional so I believe motion controls are only forced for the demo.

Rewatching the direct, I noticed 2 things which people might have missed:

1. They increased the number of missions each amiibo gives you. It was originally 15 but the narrator stated it was 20 each.

2. I think they might be planning to increase the number of maps available to be played on in each 4 hour period. Look at the bottom left of this image, where the maps are listed. There's room for a 3rd map. Another menu later on the direct has the same empty space for a 3rd slot too:

Hopefully Splatoon will have local-online play (you & a friend can locally play with others online). MK8 and SSB4 both had it.

It would have to offer other controller options for online play first, which it doesn't look like it will.

Gyro aiming is awesome. After using it in Uncharted Golden Abyss, I kept trying to use it in PS3 shooters to no avail. And it felt like a step back. It's all about small minute corrections to your aim that can be tricky with a fast-moving analogue stick. Mostly useful for sniping.

Doubt it will as that would mean one player cannot jump to another players spot and be unable to see an overview of the map.

Even though this could be easily done with an overlay, hope they do add this option.

Killing Floor.

TF2 also launched with only 6 maps but it might as well have been 5 since Hydro sucks.

Honestly all of the launch TF2 maps either were pretty average or sucked. Thankfully Valve has added over 60 maps since then, many of which are quite good.

I'm not a fan of what looks to be substantial content being locked behind the amibo's at all. Rest of the game looks great.

Well I think it would be weird if there was a rotation of 3 maps when there is a total of 5. I guess once the game has more maps we will get 3 maps per rotation.

Also since they showed 3 maps that seemed finished and 6 more with no image. I would say we get at least one new map per month. Maybe even every 3 or 2 weeks.

So splat fest is equivalent to Iron Banner lol. One thing I love about this is game is that it already has a living history. The inklings are just kids who have a hangout spot while the adults are probably working and doing grown up stuff

Meh, I expected something more inline with the Zelda attraction aiming...

Like the first Wii games that used gyroscopic aiming, Wii Play Motion, Skyward Sword even if it didn't have customization but Red Steel 2 shows how great this type of aiming is over thumbsticks.

People not liking the gyro asisted dual analog aiming are just been obtuse XD

Ha, I know. Just using that as an example of NOA's incompetence and cheapness with ads these days. Last July my co-worker actually told me his kids didn't know there was a new Mario Kart 8 until they saw it at Best Buy, at least a month past release. "Wow, look dad! A new Mario Kart is out!! When did this happen??" He said to them, "What?! It's been out for a month, you haven't seen ads for it on Nick or Cartoon Network?" He says they were insistent that they hadn't seen any MK 8 TV ads on any of their shows. Also someone online photoshopped Splatoon themed Popsicles, Pop Tart boxes, Pringles cans, ect. There's all kinds of fun ways they could cross promote and get the word out about the game better.

We just don't like it man, no need to be rude about it.

Killing Floor.

TF2 also had custom maps that were available within a few weeks of launch.

Would be killer for this game to have some sort of level editor that actually allowed you to play custom maps easily.

No need to get defensive when you are behaving irrationally and some people point this out to you. As long as your irrationality doesn't hurt anybody then indulge yourself in it and enjoy.

In the past people didn't "like" a more preceise aiming system because it was different. Now people get the chance to use the familiar aiming system they enjoy so much (and a regressive one at that) only with more precision. With the "trade off" been physcally nudging the control (even less so than a mouse). But people refuse to use something that can improve their game because "i don't like it".

Is not bad if you don't like progress, is not bad also when someone points this out to you. XD

I need to try it first hand, but gyro controls are hit and miss for me. Love the gyro option for the 3DS Zelda remakes, not as big a fan for ZombiU

I'm sure we wouldn't have to wait long for those extra maps anyway. Looking at the stills, I recognize those 3 first dlc maps from actual singleplayer locations we seen in other splatoon bits, so those maps are at least 99% done already. I'm just glad they teased 9 dlc maps, most likely meaning we'll have at least 14 mp maps in the end, which sadly is a big number of maps nowadays without having to pay the game's price twice.

Knowing Nintendo, they probably already have every event scheduled, so it's just waiting until the first maps drop to know how long it's gonna take till we have most of the content.

Looks like this game has coming along nicely. Good to see we'll eventually get some matchmaking options.

I hope they have some holiday events and outfits planned.

Aren't the 8 new stages and modes launching shortly after the game.
From the direct it seems that the stages and modes are going to be launched before the August update?

I think they'll be released every week, approximately leading up to the 'big update' in August. At least that's what makes the most sense to me, although I suppose two maps every two weeks could also work.

I thought there were 9 new maps. You're right though. The only thing that it stated would be in the august update is the party vs party and custom lobbies

I'll have some footage to share next week from the game. Not sure what I can and cannot show just yet (just know the game is en route).
