The Witcher 3 Leaked

This is not leaked, its just released to sales early. UAE almost always release their retail games early.

Why do people even bother in this age of extensive day-1 patches?

Because day1 patches are often released to the PSN/XBLA servers a week early.

Stop calling it a "leak". A leak is when someone from the developer sneaks a copy to a friend who uploads it somewhere illegally. Just selling it early is shitty and against policy, but it's not illegal, nor is it a "leak".

It's a miracle the game's even coming out in the UAE. Shit gets banned there really quick. You won't find GoW, GTA, Darksiders 1 and so much more there. Spec Ops too.

I once asked a clerk at Dubai Mall if they had God of War 3, knowing that it was banned there. He looked at me in a really weird way as if I had inquired if they stocked porn.

Those games are pretty much the only games banned and being banned means nothing in the UAE. It just means you won't be able to buy it in the malls, but standalone stores stock them and you can buy em off local online retail or import off amazon.

GAF->Internet->GAF? (for the image)

Games which are leaked early or even pirated early don't sell less.
I highly doubt that claim. As far as I've heard, pre-release piracy is the one that actually hurts revenue.
The paper discusses multiple factors, e.g. possible buzz generated and eager fans pirating content while the legal alternative isn't available yet.

An Empirical Analysis of the Impact of Pre-Release Movie Piracy on Box-Office Revenue
Digital distribution channels raise many new challenges for managers in the media industries. This is particularly true for movie studios where high-value content can be stolen and released through illegitimate digital channels, even prior to the release of the movie in legal channels. In response to this potential threat, movie studios have spent millions of dollars to protect their content from unauthorized distribution throughout the lifecycle of films. They have focused their efforts on the pre-release period under the assumption that pre-release piracy could be particularly harmful for a movie’s success.

However, surprisingly, there has been little rigorous research to analyze whether, and how much, pre-release movie piracy diminishes legitimate sales. In this paper, we analyze this question using data collected from a unique Internet file-sharing site. We find that, on average, pre-release piracy causes a 19.1% decrease in revenue compared to piracy that occurs post- release.

Our study contributes to the growing literature on piracy and digital media consumption by presenting evidence of the impact of Internet-based movie piracy on sales, and by analyzing pre-release piracy, a setting that is distinct from much of the extant literature.

From what I hear, this is because the game's distributor, Pluto kinda sorta promised CD Projekt RED it would sell insane quantities of the game and in order to do so, released the game early.

How would they sell that quantity? Well, they would. Just not in their market. The UAE is a hotbed for import/export. There are around 38 free trade zones. This allows businesses to ship it out of the country with ease. What this also means is, countries like India that have a ton of flights to the UAE back and forth, would have travellers bringing in copies of the game regularly.

How do I know this? I live in India and end up buying most of my games from stores that grey import from the UAE because no disty breaks dates here.

It's here in the UAE so it'll be the censored version I'd think.

Yup, I used to live there and have a friend who bought it. They always release games early, its a sort of games black market, prices always lower than most retail stores etc... They will have no problem selling opened games at a lower price.

I thought leaked meant pirated?

Its just available early in stores so its a street date broken type deal instead of leaked.

The witcher part is fine, I'm just referring to all the "award" tags everywhere. Its the batman cover all over again.

Its no where near that bad. Theres just the bit in the top right which is taking up a lot more space since everything on the box is written twice in english and arabic,

I think the most important question is how much of revenue does it really hurt though. The comparison with movies isn't really that valid because both movie consumption and movie piracy is much more casual. It just takes 2 hours to watch a film, and most people have little reason to revisit it. So I think pre-release piracy hurts something like that much more.

For games, at least on consoles, it is far more complicated these days to actually pirate it. So the majority of people who engage in that are likely not going to be legitimate customers to begin with. On PC the argument could probably be made both ways. But the biggest factor that you have to think about is the social aspect of games. Many of the biggest games today are packed with online features and multiplayer hooks. These naturally combat piracy, pre-release or otherwise, because if the main reason you are playing the game is because your friends are also playing it, pirating it won't do you much good.

I think Halo 3 is a good example of a game which leaked pretty early, but in the end it had little or no impact on the game being a huge critical and commercial success.

It must be UAE thing. Polish version has clean cover.

I expected to be reading about piracy, not seeing legitimate retail copies.

It makes me want this game badly, though. I wish I had a copy now.

You know, Im currently reading Potter, and Im really upset this became a meme

If you are upset, don't be, there is plenty to the whole story that will surprise you I think. It really does not spoil the main plot mysteries of the later entries imo, nor does the meme go into circumstances of the event. Enjoy ;)

I would pick this up now if it wasn't some censored version, never been a fan of those. I also don't like Arabic in games in spite of being a native speaker, it's usually awfully done and takes me out of a game.

Guess I'll have to wait till the 19th like the rest of you.

Lol it's your own fault, it's been years since they've released. Oh, and you haven't watched the latest Game of Thrones episode that aired two days ago? Whoops, your fault as well *

* according to a lot of stupid people. I agree with you

Warner is the publisher of the console version, so these awards and bonus content on the cover shouldn't really surprise anyone, haha.

For a single player focus game like the Witcher I think pre-release piracy has a big effect on revenue, especially on the PC. Taking into consideration current playing habits of most people who purchase games, a majority will never finish their purchase. When that subset of buyers knows it's easier to pirate the title they want, I believe that can have a huge impact on the overall sale of the title.

It's just that sleeve, case itself seems to be clean;

Edit:

WB is distributor for physical copies and doing TW3 marketing in NA, CDP is publisher of the game. Also all copies around the globe have that same "bonus content".

Since the game is ready and leaked, why not just unlock it on GOG/Steam? You know these days about leaked trailers and whatnot.

Its internet of all things or something, just flip that server switch CDPR!

I got my pre-ordered and i can do with some gaming now. :D

I know the bonus content is everywhere, I just meant the warning on the sleeve. :)

Oh nice, thats actually really smart to put that stuff on a sleeve and leave the actual cover clean.
