Can't link to DailyMail but

Chinese version of Iron Man 3 has an extra four minutes of footage
Chinese actors and locations do not appear in the International version
China co-production also ensures a bigger slice of the profits - 40 percent instead of 25 percent
Film has made almost $100m dollars in China so far in two weeks
China has second biggest film-going public in the world and Hollywood wants access to billions of dollars for films that become hits

I believe it was done without the directors input too.

A lot of why AoU is disappointing compared to expectations has little to nothing to do with the quality of the movie or lack there of or anything like that I believe. It had pretty solid reviews and a great cinemascore.

I think what it comes down to is a lot of people, Disney included, vastly over-estimated just how significant the wow factor of seeing super heroes team up was for the first one and its massive box office numbers.

Though I do think the marketing had something to do with it too, the trailers for AoU were just not that memorable. Focused way too much on the grim death and destruction aspect rather than the fun/humor. Which as Bobby pointed out was a issue with the Iron Man 3 marketing as well.

That would certainly explain a lower opening and total, but would it really explain the relatively big drops too? I could be wrong as I haven't followed it too closely, but the international numbers seem to behaving just fine, it's really the US that has seen the sharpest drop, not necessarily that surprising, but over 25% drop in gross is rather alarming.

Chinese presales for age of Ultron are tracking ahead of furious 7 but it will probably more front loaded. Still going to be massive there.

I don't think the bigger drops are so much due to WOM as much as just less interest in seeing it than the first overall. Due to the lack of wow factor and weaker marketing.

The chinese street racing sub-plot in Infinity War is gonna be epic.

Well, there's the novelty gone, there's the weaker marketing, you could probably say the buzz from audiences isn't quite as strong as the first film to push those on the fence, and then you're always looking at possible fatigue.

It's still just weird to see the numbers come out like this, especially after the run Marvel had last year but I guess they're serving to retain certain audiences while pushing another chunk out.

.

I'd throw in fatigue there too (don't pounce me guys!). You had a Cap led movie last year, a Cap co-lead movie with this, a Cap led movie again next year. It just seems too much, let it settle and sink in. With the Dvd release dates thrown in it can feel like you never see the back of these guys for 5 minutes.

I had forgotten about the pandering from IM3. But i too joke that every tentpole will now feature something for the Chinese audience to rally around. However substantial or not.

Theres nothing wrong with adding Chinese actors for diversity. But Marvel just threw that in like a dangling carrot for Asian audiences only. Its insulting. If you want diversity, add diversity.

Yupyup. Now, that being said, if Ultron has a special Chinese version where Vision is actually Chinese...

TRILLIONS

They had ~44 commercials and ~4 trailers. Is the content that weak?

IM3 is a more coherent film than AoU. The downtime scene is also shorter and funnier.

Tony/Pepper is a better on-screen couple (mostly due to the chemistry of the actors) than anything they've done with Cap or Banner or Clint.

Still, I'd be amazed if it doesn't outperform the first film by at least 20%

Thanos: brb guys, I need to get back so I can SKIP LEG DAY

Thanos: Oh no! I dropped the cube!

I hope there's a scene where he gets off his chair, and falls over because his legs have atrophied.

THANOS: Help me, brother.
STARFOX: Long... live... the King!
THANOS: BAKKKKKAW!

I hope there is a director's cut yo even out the pacing when thwy release it on blu-ray.

But with Whedon being done with marvel, one can only wish.

That's probably why they chose Seoul and added "Asian doctor character" in Age of Ultron this time around, so that it's slightly less flimsy.

But where are the latinos in Marvel? lol

South Korea paid millions for Seoul and then there is of course the Samsung partnership.

Insulting the audience is par of course.

I agree with you, mind you.

That's how strong the age of Mahvel is. Ant-Man is getting a movie.

I have a feeling that we are gonna see a growing number of Mahvel is dead talk.

With Ultron doing less domestic than the 1st by a large margin, and I think Ant-Man might underperform. People might latch onto those two box offices and declare "doom"

Civil War will probably huge though. It might do Ultron numbers, that movie seems to have a ton of hype

It won't if they start selling it primarily as a comedy. They need to start doing that. Audiences would like a new twist on superhero films (it's why they responded SO strongly to Guardians - which wasn't even really a superhero film, honestly) and Ant-Man's powers combined with what have been reported to be a VERY strong comedic element in the film would do that.

But they're selling it like every other Marvel movie, and I don't know if that's gonna necessarily help Ant-Man so much.

Barring poor reviews, I think Ant-Man's going to do fine. It's 2 weeks after Terminator and 2 weeks before MI5. Otherwise, it doesn't really have much blockbuster/action/superhero competition other than Pixels, which comes out a week after Ant-Man.

This is what they need to do. The trailer they showed before Ultron had this Thomas the Tank Engine scene that got more laughs than I can basically ever remember for something from a trailer.

That is how to sell the movie.

Seems like the marketing has been leaning more towards action comedy as of late, which is definitely a step in the right direction. I'm not sure what Disney is thinking with Ant-man in general though, the marketing and hype feels nonexistent, It'll probably ramp up next month but even so, it some times feels like Marvel and Disney would sooner forget it even exists.

as much money as these Marvel movies make, would it kill them to have some official posters worth a damn

Its weird because that Con poster actually showed his power well

The films wrapped and with unlimited assets they delivered that half-hearted piece of shit above.

The GOTG and Thor posters aren't high art but at least they nail the films pretty well

Yea Marvel's marketing is at its best with pop culture references like Guardians and Cherry Bomb. Ant-Man needs to get the new "Honey, I Shrunk the Kids" audience to be a huge hit.

As for MCU's box office it may have peaked but it's still the reigning three-peat OW champ....although it'll be interesting to see how the flailing Spider-Man influences the domestic box office records. Do we expect to see records Hulk smashed with both Spidey and Robert Downey Jr. together?

For Thanos beeing the believeable high end villian, he's going to fuck shit up big time. Kill 1-2 big names... annihilate 1-2 big cities. He really needs "oh shit" moments.

Absolutely. As much as people are anticipating seeing Batman & Superman onscreen for the first time (even with the lukewarm reception online to the teaser - people are interested in SEEING that, whatever form it might take) seeing Spider-Man interact with the rest of the Marvel Universe for the first time is absolutely going to be a draw in and of itself. He might only be a supporting character, but they're going to sell the hell out of that fact. And it's going to work.

Marvel should retire their template for their posters and create something new.

WB nailed the marketing for MoS. May have been the best set of trailers and posters for a comic based film.

Yep. Avengers:AOU lacked new heroes people cared about. Spidey absolutely has a built in audience who'd add to Marvels current take.
