Witcher 3 downgrade arguments in here and nowhere else

This is absurd. How can you make that decision before the game has been released

Didn't have a lot of interest in the game. Only the graphics enticed me.

Also, I don't like people who get my hopes up and quash them. Make me feel foolish and naive for believing their "gameplay" videos :|

Let these caustic words of condemnation be my vengeance for their unforgivable insult.

I think it still looks good, but it's not mind-blowingly impressive like the "conceptual" footage which looked like it might be achievable on a next generation console in the future.

I want to know what secret tech demo of the most complex dynamic lighting, fog, particle, weather, and animal presences, is making people believe we simply haven't seen the right time of day in a couple of years of W3 footage to match the original quality.

Who cares.

It's CDPR after all, which is a bomb ass developer, so let's try to NOT treat them the same way like we treat any of those evil big publishers like Ubisoft and Capcom.

Also, I really have no clue why it mattered in those other neverending downgrade threads then, but let it be known that this time, the downgrade does not matter at all.

Dear lord...please let this be a joke post.

Older ones are on top, newer ones on bottom.

While this comparison is far from perfect I think it is a much fairer and more extensive comparison than most of the others I've seen. All effort has been made to compare identical locations or at least similar looking areas.

Still, many of these would not qualify for a direct comparison and are not meant to objectively prove or disprove a downgrade, since some of the shots have different lighting conditions or are of different locations altogether. What I do think they show is that, based on the best evidence we have, there are no grounds for claims of a "massive downgrade". In fact, comparing the most similar or exact areas that we are able to I'd say the overall graphical quality is very similar.

Surprised that some of you didn't see this coming after this happened...
Anax said to not pre order the game. To wait for reviews. Especially the console versions. That would leave me to believe he thinks the console versions would be a buggy mess and review badly? I dont think this downgrade will affect the reviews so much. Now if it runs like crap on consoles to the point that it affects the review scores, he would have been right. We will see I guess.

]The top one could never run on todays consoles in a huge open world[/B], and would take a super beefy PC, I think we learned that by now. Add in the costs to develop an entire world to the top screen level, and what you have is an expensive game to make with a small market.

The model/world detail difference between top and bottom is huge, so much so that it would be like creating two game worlds, which they likely did not have schedule or budget for. It is unfortunate that they aimed too high and released that footage however.

That's the point I made. The top couldn't run on consoles. So it all got nerfed. Even the PC version.

I honestly just do not buy that the developers would think they could get away with that. I know here on GAF the Witcher games are held in high esteem but they have not exactly set the sales charts on fire. A sloppy release and poor reviews would be very bad for their future.

Haha, okay. Sure, why not.
Also notable, the game looks drastically different depending on TOD.

For the love of God, can someone get some uncompressed pictures posted so we can have a real discussion?
NO, only images from /v/, which are also unbelievably compressed. Btw, ignore all of the links, images, gifs from the latest trailers. Only compare the super compressed images, which aren't even of the same location.
Also be extremely transparent about how little you know about game development, even to the point of telling developers that they're wrong about how game development works.

I'm not sure I see anyone in this thread finding character models particularly weakened or questionable, so if you could find images of the game world in focus rather than behind the character dialogue, that would be more helpful.

No. First of all, I've already explained how I personally think the Watch Dogs thing was overblown. It deserved some attention, but not the extreme reaction and negative hyperbole that surrounded it.

Second of all, I don't think there is evidence of an overall downgrade in the case of The Witcher 3. Certainly not anything significant enough to make a fuss about.

There are plenty of evidence to support the downgrade claim.

So far all of the hands on impressions I have read have been overwhelmingly positive. Lots of them were from playing the console versions. I don't see there being problems unless for some strange reason the games performance nosedives after the first few hours, or you run into late game bugs like we saw in Skyrim on PS3. I have faith CDPR did good with this on all platforms. Fingers crossed.

Feels like most people are mad that other people aren't mad at the fact that there is an actual downgrade. While the game doesn't look as good as the initial reveal trailer, I still have hopes it will be fun to play.

I think some people are just annoyed that there are a handful of people completely denying that there has been any downgrade at all.

Fingers crossed here as well. Still looking for that next gen fantasy rpg that I can just dive in to and absorb all of the story and lore and gameplay. Dragon Age Inquisition was good but did not satisfy that need.

Well, they decide to have this thing running in "next-gen" system, of course there was going to be a downgrade.

Still looks quite good, hopefully plays the same.

Somebody needs to take the newer screenshots and sharpen the fuck out of them. The main difference between 2014 Witcher 3 and 2015 Witcher 3 is CDP removed the sharpening filter, which was a very unpopular feature of Witcher 2.

Lighting affects every part of the game world, not just character models.
This video shows the game going from the afternoon to night time.

Certainly not from the gamersyde videos. And with imgur as a host as well.

My two biggest issues are one directly at CDProjekt Red and the other about gaming in general.

1.) I love the respect CDprojekt has for their customers but what I am not as cool with is the blatant lying about the downgrade. It puts them on the same level as Ubisoft and EA and I know they are better then that

2.)If this is something inescapable due to the development process, then re-label your early footage and don't promise that this will be what players will have their hands on.

uhhm, or maybe consumers can grow half a brain and realize that gameplay footage from a year before the game release is just that.....footage from a YEAR AGO. Saying that they should literally go back and re-label every video they have released that isnt accounting for changes made in the development process....

so entitled, it is a gross look

I don't know why everyone is bitching about IQ, because to me this game looks fantastic. And sometimes engines need to be tweaked to get it running stable for moderate rigs and consoles.

Grow up!

Christ, there might be more people trying to paint others as "whiny, entitled and mad" then the very people they seem to be harping on.

That gif has never been overly impressive to me. Aside from perhaps the grass there's nothing in the composition of that shot that isn't present in the new footage. From the detail of the NPCs to the texture quality and post effects there's nothing special about that shot. Even the way the windmill looks is essentially identical to the way the windmills look in the newer footage.
Like I said, someone replicate it when it comes out. I strongly believe it won't look anywhere near as good. Is absolutely love to be proven wrong though.

I still think the game looks really damn good myself from what I've seen, I'm not a super big graphics person though. Just excited to see how much further they take the choices and consequences from Witcher 2 now that there is an even bigger game and bigger world here.

Welcome to neogaf :P

Basically my opinion on this, for what little its worth is

1. The game DID get some downgrades. There are certain aspects that just do not look as good as they once did, like fire effects for example

However

2. The game is still plenty gorgeous and will most likely be a joy to play.

Damn. Pretty glad I've ignored this game's media for the most part.

I'll get to play it on release and barring any crazy frame rate issues, I'll enjoy it. It still looks really pretty even with these so called downgrades.

Yeah shocking. There are only a few developers who manages to upgrade graphics of final product over the first reveal trailer. Almost everytime it's just prerendered-how-it-could-like footage that you see 1 or 2 years in advance. Sony's 1st party for example seems to have learn this lesson and I can't think of any PS4 game that was over promised and didn't looked excately like their first trailers / screenshots. I guess that is the simple fact that multiplat devs have to make compromises so that their games can run on 3+ different systems where single platform devs can concentrate on the strength of just one system at time.

And I can you promise another letdown: SW Battlefront will nothing look like its reveal trailer. Not even on a PC
