Koji Igarashi Kickstarts Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night (2.5D, backdash, 2018)

For as awesome as Ayami Kojima's artwork is, the lack of it doesn't really mean much for the game. I'd argue that Dawn of Sorrow was the best Igavania game and it's boxart looked like this:
Nah.

Aria of Sorrow = SotN > Order of Ecclesia > Portrait of Ruin > Dawn of Sorrow > Harmony of Dissonance

In anime there's several grades:

lucky star >>>> clamp >>>>>> Hirohiko Araki >>>>>>>>> Kojima

So going from Kojima to clamp level is quite the downgrade, even if is still animu!

Uh, you mean the other way around, right? Those >'s aren't used in the way you're using them.

This is Kickstarter 101. The most successful projects aren't selling just a video game; they're selling a movement.

Like with Yooka-Laylee. Taken at face value, it's a decent tech demo with some generic Dreamworks-style character art. However, they've positioned the Kickstarter as a call to action to revive a sub-genre of game that's not too popular these days and they're reaping the benefits.
I like how gamers themselves created the angle of buying this because of the Konami situation. I do hope they dont try to turn this into a tv show or have sequel plans already.

For real? Anybody have a pic of that?

I wish him the best of luck and I'm sure he'll get all the funding he needs but I think I'll pass on this one. I like seeing Kickstarter being used as a means of funding spiritual successors from acclaimed developers, though. It's nice to see that such projects can exist in this day and age.

This isn't subtle at all, unlike EviLore in Pillars.

Yeah, the GAF/Evilore presence in Pillars is really well done and if you don't know what it is you would have no reason to think it wasn't just part of the game world invented by Obsidian.

Can someone explain to me what they mean by 2.5D? Is it that the whole game is on 3D but plays like a 2D game or is it 2D sprites with 3D backgrounds with 2D gameplay?

3D models and backgrounds on a 2D plane.

Think Street Fighter 4, Guilty Gear Xrd, Ultimate Ghosts n' Ghoblins etc.

Just started and it's at 300k. Seems like everybody wants it.

Since this is in no risk of failing the goal, I'll just wait until release to buy. Looks like it could be really cool.

Man a real shame they didn't hire a live in-ear interpreter.
lol

Gawd.

Shovel Knight had something like that, but the portraits fit so well with the game's pixel art style you wouldn't even notice unless it was pointed out to you.

I think it still looks bad and kind of out of place in Shovel Knight.

The low fidelity of the graphics make it look less horrible than the one in MN9

Scummy incentives aside, there's just a ton of this "team effort" speak littered throughout the project.

"Together, we can reclaim our passion"

"Join my army of the night!"

You'll see a ton of this "we" stuff on Twitch, too. Gamers lap it up.

Sound like the "Yes Movement", friend. Grown ass men ate that shit up.

It would be strange for it not to explicitly mention coop though, no?

"2nd playable character" doesn't necessarily imply coop.

Correct. It'll probably be a Richter level character a la Richter Mode in SotN and DoS.

People expecting Co-op in a primarily single-player focused series/genre need to GTFO, IMO. Stop ruining things I love with forced co-op, damn it.

not gonna lie, I noticed them too and I didn't follow the KS. I was like "oh, here's the backer area"

These kinda backer rewards demolish immersion in 0.3 seconds.
This game has this kinda thing too.
Depends on the context. They worked great in Shovel Knight, mostly because of the game's humor; I loved the obvious pokes at the backers and how you have to pay an exorbitant sum of money just to enter the area.

What is going on with Mighty Not Megaman that people are so distrustful of IntiCreate and this kickstarter? I remember liking the Z games and MM9/10 were well received. Figured it was in good hands.

Is it just the original concept screenshots for the game being completely different than the final product(in a bad way) or is it something else as well?

Haha, that promo video. IGA is the man.

So excited to see this come to fruition. I wish he had gotten Ayami Kojima back for the art, though. :(

You do realize that the images shown are only "concept" art right? It could look vastly different by release once they implement in with the UE4.
I hope it stays the way it is though!

It could... but it won't. Look at MN9. They have a "style" they are working from. I wouldn't expect DRASTIC changes. It will get a concept art -> implementation change to make the art work in UE, but it won't change into SOTN somehow. I remain cautiously optomistic. But Igavania is great I'm just sad this is the art direction it is going in.

Looks like poo for a game that raised 3 million dollars.

I expect coop because it's explicitly mentioned in the KS video!

(Also, I love coop)

This isn't a problem when pushing E! Network programming, but if that makes its way into other media, that's where it gets weird - hence the MN9 screenshot that is very, very jarring. Not that I have much faith in that game of being worth playing, but that's really jarring to see.

some people don't like backer images in the games. I don't really care, tbh.

Oh, I see. Personally I don't mind. Those people paid more to see the game realized, so I think they deserve a little spot. Hell, if I had enough money I would love to see my face in a portrait on the game. :D

Yeah but the in-game art doesn't match the boxart for that game at all. I don't give a shit what the box art looks like since that's not what I'm looking at after the first minute.

Exactly my point. Outside the boxart and the occasional portrait, Kojima's artwork or lack there of doesn't impact the game itself.

People are graphics whoring on a kickstarter project, it's silly. Might No. 9 was never going to be a looker and neither is this.

Besides the portrait art, where else was that evident?

The limitations of a low-res 2D sprite game.

Also, the sprite wasn't overflowing with the amazingness of Kojima's original concept art. If it weren't for the fact we already know Soma and co. were originally designed by Kojima, there's nothing in the sprite work that makes it uniquely Kojima.
