The Witcher 3 | Review Thread

I've been eyeing this, I have the Witcher 2 on X360 but never played it, should I beat it before considering the Witcher 3 or is the universe newcomer-friendly ?

if you've got it then play it until 3 comes out?

and apparently 3 is welcoming to both new and returning players. so should be too much of a problem to jump in. but again if you've got 2 then just start playing. that's what i'm doing.

Yeah, struck me as odd as well. A fetch-quest heavy mainquest overstaying its welcome sounds damn underwhelming.

From what I've read, the open-world "quest-pockets" are more fun than the main quest. Enough so that the main quest isn't even needed for the game to excel.

It's as if they went overboard trying to make the open world activities so great that they didn't bother much with the main storyline. But the open world activities are so much fun, the main storyline being dull doesn't have any effect of the overall game experience.

The open world part of Witcher 3 completely shadows the rest of the game - but not in a bad way. In fact, it sounds liek if they completely deleted the main storyline and only had the open world questing, it would still be a highly-regarded game.

They may have been better off just deleting the main quest as they implemented it and put in the story about searching for his wife and daughter into one of the open world "quest-pockets", via randomly dispersed breadcrumbs eventually leading you to the conclusion. That way, it wouldn't look so dull or out of place with the rest of the open world.

For the games that I am hyped for I usually wait for the reviews from the reviewers with the same taste as I do. Not everyone who has reviewed The Witcher 3 is an rpg fan or has played the last two Witcher games. As for the fetch quests, most rpgs have it. New Vegas had it. But in New Vegas those fetch quests were complimented with a well-written story and characters. So not only I didn't mind the fetch quest but I also enjoyed them greatly. I think it might be the case for The Witcher 3. There might be some fetch quests in the main quest but I'm sure the story for those quests will also be good. At least I hope.

Gerstmann doesn't like Yoshi's Island, Resident Evil 4, Super Metroid, or Red Dead Redemption. I spend an inordinate amount of time consuming Giant Bomb content, and it's hilarious how much he really does hate videogames.

Man... I can understand that you sometimes just don't like one of these games, but these games weren't praised like this for nothing. He seems like a guy in the wrong business. Or he likes to be grumpy.

It's good to have someone like Jeff give his opinion. Not a big wRPG fan, so I'm sure some people want to know if this game will turn them.

Fixed it for you. I think a lot of people probably get hung up on the prologue of Witcher 1 when the rest of the game is so much better.

For sure. I can totally understand people getting frustrated and quitting before you get into Vizima. After that, though, the game is consistently great. And I miss Strong Style and Fast Style, but especially Group Style. Taking out little enemies one-by-one in The Witcher 2 felt like such a downgrade.

When was the last time we saw someting like this:

That statement..look at that.

I swear I see a review with that statement at least every 18 months, and it's always for a much hyped AAA game

I'm not sure if I'm supposed to be surprised or impressed or what

It pisses me off and Im kinda about to leave this thread because of this.

It'd ridiculous. I'm interested in what he has to say. I want the most informed opinion before I drop $60 on a game, and that means I'll listen to everything that everyone has to say.

Just like when I go to buy a product on Amazon. I don't JUST read the positive reviews. I actually look for the negative reviews first to see what kind of problems there might be and whether or not those will bother me.

First Witcher is great. It starts off VERY poorly though. Extremely, even.

Second Witcher is good. It also sucks at the start.

I don't believe the hype for this one. I am sure it is pretty good but I know I will run one too many errands in this game and not beat it.

Kevin also gave Dragon Age a 9 and Bloodborne a 9 his opinion doesn't mean much.

Not to mention CD flew the gamespot guys out to their workplace for like a week.

I was right, there was no way this game wasn't going to get high scores regardless of it's actual quality.
That's kind of a serious accusation, since they even say they paid for it themselves in all the videos.

lol @ these reviews, it's like everybody reviewed a different game. There's proabably every combination of these out there: great strory/shit story, great open world/awful open world, meaningful sub-quests/boring fetch-quests and colectathons, amazing combat/crap combat.

Its a recipe for backlash, but I hope it doesn't happen with this one.

I kind of get the impression it's this sometimes.

That's part of why I don't listen to GiantBombCast so much anymore. I love all the other guys, and the banter is great, but man Jeff is so fucking negative on things all the damned time.... and his opinions just don't make sense a lot.

its hilarious how everyone gets so upset every single time jeff doesn't like the current big game
has anyone figured out the guy tends to like arcade or at least arcade-ish(official term) games?
also, you know, opinions. how do they work?

Then why are people interested in his opinions ? (honest question)

Have you ever been on a product page on Amazon or something and then looked at a very positive review, and then went and read the most critical review?

I feel like everybody does this for everything except for video games, because for some reason it gets personal.

Why the hell is everyone shitting on anyone that has a negative opinion about this game?

Nobody is shitting on him. Most people are expressing that this is a known quantity. It was when he said he was excited about the game, that was when things were weird.

The PS Access footage said it has been designed to be newcomer friendly but TBH if I had to choose I'd definitely play the second game beforehand. Just try not to burn yourself out on it too much. You can probably blast through The Witcher 2 in 20 hours or so if you ignore side quests (which are generally quite dull).

heeeeeey

Jeff has become increasingly negative and disgruntled when it comes to games. Not sure what his problem is but hes always a debbie downer

Jeff kind of always been like this but Ryan/Vinny would always point out the positive side of games during podcasts/quicklooks etc where as now it is just Brad & Dan who point out even more negative stuff for the most part. Drew is the only one left who seems positive/happy to play anything but also has a limited scope on what he actually plays and follows.

Also he never really has been a fan of the large RPG heavy story driven games. Hopefully Vinny gets to do the quicklook ^.^

Yeah.

I mean ffs folks, stop saying a reviwer hates good games, hope he leaves the industry etc. just because he has another opinion on a game folks in this thread have yet to try.

It's something about listening to all opinions, even if you don't like them.

Of course Jeff wouldnt like it. 100 hour games are no longer his thing. He has turned almost exclusively to fast paced and short burst games a few years ago

Let's keep this about Witcher 3 reviews and not about what games someone who said something less enthusiastic about the Witcher 3 likes or doesn't like please

So, how much time before we get the threads:

-Is The Witcher 3 GOTY?
-Is The Witcher 3 the best game of the generation?
-Can the The Witcher 3 be the best RPG of all-time?
-Why aren't most games like The Witcher 3?

=P

Yep, I agree. That Bloodborne score is too low.

Who cares what one person thinks about a game? The concensus is overwhelmingly positive across the board.

Seriously, people are allowed to have their own opinions on things. Not every game is going to be to the taste of every person, he doesn't have to like it just cause everyone else likes it.

So you're saying the people who played the game don't know the actual quality of the game? That makes no sense.
