I was amazingly hype 2 weeks ago when they were doing the marketing onslaught, but now even after the amazing reviews im actually not that excited. I always thought they started too early. For the best i suppose as im not impatient waiting. Still preordered for obvious reasons, best rpg and all.

It does make me wonder if the framerate affected the review scores at all. It seems it likely did, considering it soured some people's experience enough for them to spend time talking about it. I wonder if the scores would have been somewhat higher, for example, if they had all been playing on PC.

It wasn't reviewed with the patch, that's coming day one according to the developers and yeah it's a bit curious they didn't send out Xbox One copies.

I can. He's been waiting for so long and they started heavy marketing a bit too early, so he had to distract himself with other things and with irl stuff to the point he still wants to play the game but the "I gotta play this NOW OH MY GOD" hype has peaked and gone down already. This has happened to me before.
Love how hard people are trying to say this game looks bad. Meanwhile, I'm over here on the edge of my seat waiting to get my hands on it. It looks great and can't wait to get back to Temeria.
One week left to finish my third playthrough of Witcher 2.
Same here. Hoping I can do that and finish Sword of Destiny + Blood of Elves. I don't think I'll make it, but I'm gonna try lol. Going to be immersed in The Witcher either way.

No offense to you, but I don't like these types of comparisons because most of the time, they compare the BEST hand-picked shots from certain games and compare them to, well, all that we have on-hand right now (I know for a fact it's possible to find some shoddy areas of Dragon Age: Inquisition. Low res textures, poor geometry, etc.)
TW3 doesn't fare that badly in these shots:

Yeah, I agree. It wasn't perfect, but I liked it quite a lot and thought it was much better than what we get in most RPGs. The fact most reviews are saying it has only improved in The Witcher 3 leaves me with little doubt that I'll have a great time with it.
You make some good points, and I think you're most probably right. Last gen the open world games that really wowed me the most, and that were graphically way above and beyond the competition at their times of release, were The Witcher 2 (PC), Red Dead Redemption and GTA V. Be interesting to see what games do it this gen. AC Unity is certainly beautiful looking. Guerrilla Game's Horizon has the potential to be a real stand out stunner too. Still, no point judging W3's graphical merits till I play it for myself in the flesh. I do feel bad for PC centric gamers, as I've no doubt the consoles held their version back.
My understanding, from what I've read in this thread, is that's the whole reason only PS4 review copies were sent out. The day one PC patch wasn't ready yet but the PS4 patch was. Still doesn't explain the absence of Xbox one though.

I have never been super impressed with Witcher combat, for me it has always been story, and art. If it is at all less janky than before, then great.

Are you saying they reviewed the game too early?
I would generally think publishers who put a review embargo until release, bring scrutiny and possibly questionable doubt over their product for waiting until the absolute last minute.
I mean I'd rather press get the game earlier and can release their views prior to the release that way people have a general idea of what to expect before the game comes out.
As opposed to release day reviews and finding out the publisher / developer held out on reviews as long as they possibly could because they weren't confident their product was up to critical snuff, and relied on people to buy the product blindly before they could get the chance to read the review.
I mean this way if the reviews come out before the release, at least the public will know a game has positive or negative before the release and makes the issue of blind purchases that less of an occurrence.
Not that there is anything wrong on buying game without regard to reviews. Some times not I even I agree with the public's opinion on something, this is especially ever true being a fan of tri-Ace games and Star Ocean.

Mmm dat rain. Hopefully someone makes a native trainer for the PC version like GTA V's where you can change weather on the fly, or at the least some console commands that'll let you switch it.

It's amazing how different lightning conditions and time of day can totally change the overall feel of the games visuals.
I would have loved to use that as one of those animated wallpapers that change every minute, just a shame the Game Informer logo is there.

Yeah not a fan of some of those screenshot dumps. Just cause someone else doesn't consider the content of a screenshot a spoiler doesn't mean a lot of other people won't. One could argue then don't come here but still, that's what we have spoiler/screenshot threads for.
Nah i was talking about CDPR had a very heavy marketing push with articles, trailers, youtube videos well before reviews came. I would have preferred they time that all with the review week but really it doesnt matter. Just saying it impacted my excitement to start playing since i feel like ive been bombarded for a month now with new footage.

Anyone that generally doesn't like or lack to desire to finish WRPGs does this game set itself apart well enough?
I could never get into Dragon Age, Elder Scrolls, Mass Effect, etc, but this looks amazing and want to give it a try. Just worried that I will enjoy it for 20 hours and get bored like the aforementioned games.

It could be safe to say that yes, story and plot are important in Witcher games.
I would stay away at this rate.

The games are based on series of very good books which has a pre-established world lore and everything. There is more plot involvement due to the fact the main character Geralt is a constant throughout the series rather then some "be yourself avatar" like Elder Scrolls games.
So to answer question in lesser words, yes the plot is worthwhile.
I believe the The Witcher with it's save transfer from one game to the next outside of Mass Effect and Dragon Age is one of the very few games that has impacting decisions based on the previous game.
I will not go into specifics for the sake of being as spoiler free as possible.

The plot in the witcher games so far has been pretty vanilla for the most part. The intrigue comes from seeing the world the author has crafted come into life, alongside the characters being pretty great and seeing all the politics that drive the universe.
This game seems like the story will be ok, but that doesn't mean the characters won't be amazing. I mean some of the best movies had a straightforward plot but good execution with incredible characters.
If you haven't read the Witcher short novels, they are short (duh) and give you a good idea about Geralt and some of the main characters that will appear in these novels.
If you haven't played the games, watch some videos giving you the plot of the games and maybe background on the universe. I play these games for the plot but I read every single novel.
Yeah, its also the strangest since he spends half the review essentially complaining that its not Skyrim.

This game has had a huge bombardment of pre-release media, more so than most AAA releases I can think of in as short a time span. I'm with you, they've whet my appetite, now gimme!

So far Bayontta 2 and Bloodborne have lived up to the amazing review score hype. Hopefully, The Witcher can do as well. I have high expectations.
Sounds like "open world" term for RPG make people expect something like Skyrim this gen.
Guess it's kinda like MMO --- where Skyrim is the sandbox kind while Witcher is the theme park kind.

This snippet that sent the tone of the review made me roll my eyes.
The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt. The Skyrim killer; the ultimate open-world RPG; the game delayed by its developer to ensure your adventure is so polished you can see your delighted simper in its every frame.
Also he goes on about how Witcher 3 isn't truly open world because there are zoned areas (Kind of like how Whiterun in Skyrim was it's own zone separate from the world exterior) Basically semantics wordplay at work here.
