Witcher 3 downgrade arguments in here and nowhere else

Again with sites not cranking all the settings up.

You would think this would be simple... but no sight seems to want to actvate all uber settings+gameworks and take some footage/screens.

I don't understand.

(Hairworks and likely HBAO+ look to be disabled here)

Those are official CDPR screens, by the way, which makes it even more enigmatic.

Yeah, it kinda makes me think something is wrong with their HBAO implementation and/or it is extremely resource intensive. Makes no sense to me that they wouldn't enable every single last setting for PR shots.

This video has HBAO enabled apparently.

There was an event in Munich where people could try out the Witcher 3 on multiple configurations.

The guy has played it on a GTX 980 @ 1080p with Hairworks and HBAO.

The video is in german though:

But the screenshots on this site already look better than what is seen in the video. (YouTube compression be damned.)

The game looks beautiful... But yeah, I think grass should cast shadows like in GTA V's Ultra settings. But that would cripple single card setups very likely.

The background in this image is weird looking. The drop off in detail is so close to the character, that can't be right

My bad if this has already been posted but I didn't find it at first sight.

That's how The Order 1886 looks on PS4... Good luck achieving that level of graphics in an open world game. Would love to know what kind of PC one would need to run it... ?

Nice. Does seem too look better although the grass in the video is glossed over quickly and has a lot of shadows cast on it. But it does seem a little darker and less flat in this video than say the screen above.

Yeah, I noticed that too... but in that video it was more of a green smudge than grass, lol.

Thanks for this. I think the foliage MIGHT look better, but still looks pretty flat in some areas. Hard to tell with the compression, of course.

The grass looks the same to me as the screenshots posted.

Ooo thanks for posting this. Looks nicer than most of the recent footage I've seen. I'm just hoping so bad there will be mods that improve the grass. Please please please modders. It's the biggest issue i have with the downgrade.

Its always been flat, even in the early videos. I'd be curious to see how it looks with the sharpening filter back on.

Finally! It looks good, but can't tell if there is much difference with this quality. Any idea what he's saying in the video? Also I wonder if in-game HBAO is the same as Nvidia HBAO+.

HBAO+ affects vegetation in UE4 I can confirm that. I don't know its implementation in Withcer 3 though.

It does

When you’re roaming the lands of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, on horseback or on foot, NVIDIA GameWorks’ HBAO+ will increase the quality of Ambient Occlusion (AO) shadows on every character, object, surface, and piece of foliage, greatly enhancing image quality game-wide.

Don't be surprised if the pop in is that severe. Witcher 2 has grass that would literally pop in 3 feet in front of Geralt, even with the LOD cranked to max.

Source: I saw that shit happen last night playing it.

I think there are some settings you can change to fix this. Not in-game, but in a config file.

But yes, TW2 has/had LOD issues and it looks like the same may be true here.

Guys doesn't this screenshot have HBAO+ enabled? Look at the grass especially.

This is actually my favourite post-downgrade screenshot (although it's at 4k, so....).

I just REALLY hope I have enough headroom to do all that at 4k60. The performance chart seems to indicate that I would. Fingers crossed!

It certainly does seem to have it. Though they had mentioned that this shot was a "mix of High & Ultra", whatever the hell that means.

Indeed. It does seem to. Also my favorite screen. Post downgrade, sidegrade whatever. Looks a hell of a lot better than any screens we saw in 2013.

If I can have the game looking like that, with hairworks and 30+ FPS, I am one happy son of a bitch.

Wow, the grass is way more detailed than in the past few screenshots on this thread. If that is the HBAO+, then that makes a hell of a difference.

He talks about what setup he was using and that he isn't really big into RPGs in general.
Then he talks about the downgrade, but... he says he doesn't even remember how it initially looked so he can't say much about it personally, but he repeats what the CDPR guys at the event told him:
They apparently said that the comparisons aren't really sound, becasue they are being compared during different weather and lighting conditions. The weather not only affects the lighting in general, but also if there is mist or fog in some places. Also the weather doesn't always have the same effect on different areas so you would need to compare identical scenes instead of two different ones under different condiitions.
Then he just talks about how amazing the Hairworks looks on different monsters etc.

That's the gist of it.

Hmmmm, makes sense. Which is why I think I'm going to be spending hours on day 1 just trying to replicate same scenes

Yeah. No idea what's going on in the particular shot. Looks like a smudged oil painting as backdrop. Wonder if it's an LOD bug

Those are PR shots. Nobody releases a PR shot with a LOD bug. It's most likely a photoshop to add a "painting" look to the scene. Or it's just their design.

Are you talking about act 2 ? There is a mod that changes grass color, making the popin much less noticeable, day and night difference. You can find it on nexus,it has zero perf impact.

Except it's not a PR shot. These are directly generated by the devs and posted on forums and twitter. It probably goes through some level of approval, but it isn't really vetted in the classic PR sense. That's why it doesn't show up on their website or promo material.

I'm rooting for you, but I'll be shocked if you can re-create that in the current game. Here's hoping.

We'll see, though obviously I can't recreate the GIF I posted, unless someone figures out a free roaming camera cheat/mod.

God damn you CDPR for not releasing a photo mode!

That doesn't look like it's ultra settings. The AO on the grass looks poor or absent..

Yeah but even then it's not going to cast shadows like GTA does. That's a different level of insane.

Nope. There isn't any PBR, if you look at character models from the same time period you will find that they look kind of dull and flat. This scene was done with the dx9 renderer.

I think it doesn't.
Look at that aura around Geralt legs.
I noticed that white aura around him as well. Could it be HBAO then? Is it only HBAO+ that is able to remove the halo around objects, or does HBAO do it as well? Sorry I don't know too much about the tech, but I've always wanted to learn about this stuff.
