Witcher 3 downgrade arguments in here and nowhere else

People are missing the part where he said it is an early PC version, regardless of patch status and its magical properties. That part at least is undeniable. I proved that a day before this even became an issue, The scene in the PC build being previewed played out differently (and looked like ass too). Feel free to be skeptical of what they plan to show us (I am too), but at least take all facts in before you do so.

The witcher: SSX edition

And that's how Shaun White became known as the White Wolf

We are like 4 days until release, why is it so hard?

Oh wooow. Their reasoning broke my PR bullshit detector. Let's analyse the quote.

“Unfortunately we don’t know how this video was created and what PC settings have been used.
Video must have been created with magic or something... And the PC settings... Yeah they could've been anything... Even though the video said it was maxed... But let's ignore that... And yeah we made the game ... But let's pretend we don't know what those settings were in the video... And yeah we contacted the people that made the video... But we forgot to ask what settings they used... Pls believe us...

It compared an early PC version with a PS4 debug build without the day 1 patch
This is my favourite part. Instead of telling us what has changed since the builds that were shown in the video, they simply tell us that one was old and the other is missing a patch. Jesus christ. Oh no, it was an early PC version?! What does that mean? If we follow the 2013-2014 trend, then the current build must look even worse, right?! And what's that? The PS4 was missing the day one patch?! Damn, so it must look even better now or something, right?!

Or MAYBE there is no difference at all in the current builds in those particular scenes, but you needed a more convincing excuse to pull down the video?

… Something went wrong here

and therefore we spoke to the editorial team behind it – we both agreed something is not quite right and while we’re figuring out what mistake has been made, we have removed the video.”
We contacted the peoples and the peoples also dunno but the peoples agree that something is wrong but we dunno wot it is but there is a mistake and we dunno so we remove video and still dunno and please buy our game PC gamers.

Maybe they should get their shit together instead of making mistakes and poorly damage controlling them. They've been on a roll of PR disaster lately with the no downgrade, GMG keys and now this.

Not giving a good PC build to reviewers one week before the launch doesn't seem the smartest idea. It's Bioware or Bethesda level of stupid when they are trying to hide a version of the game or submit the wrong build.

Agreed. I had a meltdown over this when I found out that they confirmed my suspicions. They deserve the flak they are getting. But let's not lose sight of the facts and turn into an angry mob that can't be reasoned with. It doesn't help anyone, especially so close to launch.

I don't think the new build is going to look much better, correct me if I am wrong. Development this late is all for bug fixing and optimization.

You are missing the point. The build was old. Given that the scene has been redesigned since, it's probably more than a month old at the very least. Heck, they went Gold several weeks ago and Conan's video was recorded a while ago as well. Art direction does not change this late in the game

I suspect that they got delayed in bug fixing the common build with console settings thus pushing back the time they had to focus on higher end settings. There is no other reason for them to be so guarded with the PC version.

The Hairworks reminds me of Cheebacca's fur in the new movie, too shiny and neat.

He just uses Vidal Sassoon. And probably Clairol Loving Care as well.

The witcher: SSX edition

Haha, yeah. I thought something similar the first time I saw that. Who are the two characters following Geralt?

Oh wooow. Their reasoning broke my PR bullshit detector.

Yeah, I can't believe some people are seriously able to keep this down.

I wanna know about the whole bullshit agenda with no ultra screens/video PR. Wanting to keep it a surprise for gamers to find out. Sounds sus :s :|
Like it couldn't have been more fishy once all the downgrade info started coming out.

Can't believe I had some faith these guys wouldn't full console fuck the pc userbase & not gently or with grace but real shitty typical corporate shill pr evasiveness/vagueness.

Full game including both expansions can be had for US $36.38 via Ukraine VPN when purchasing at GOG.

All that aside lol it looks pretty and I'm keen... Hell Witcher 2 on screen still looks nice.
SLI 770 4GB
3770k 4.6
Hoping for ultra with some AA and 50-60fps @ 1080p...

Regardless of any downgrade, it still looks like the PC version is really nice visually.

That said, it is a bit disconcerting how cagey the developers seem to be in really showcasing the PC version in terms of features that make it stand out from the console version besides the Nvidia Gameworks features.

Game looks great and all but with this being CDPR's first big simultaneous 3 platform release, I can't help but feel like it might be a really rocky launch, especially considering the launches for TW1 and TW2 were pretty dicey.

Yeah this could end up being a colossal fuck up even if all their claims are true. It's just wayyyy too close to release. I've worked on much smaller software projects and lose sleep if the final build (including patches) does not get done at least a week before release. This is the kind of crunch that will force devs to breakdown and screw up even more or even quit.

Ps4 1080p:

Taken from GAFs very own screenshot thread, thx to user cngai

Taken from PCGH, its supposed to be max. graphics settings but CDPR claims its an old build, so graphics might not be representative of final version.

so the pc and ps4 version look basically the same from what i could see.

that pretty much put my performance concerns to rest. my old pc should do just fine. (i5@3.8ghz + 8gig ram + gtx680 4gig).

i guess the only thing you probably need a hog system for would be the nvidia hairworks ...which isn't surprising since physx almost always tanks your performance anyway.

Yeah. Those were dicey and they only had one platform to contend with.

Curiously, it puts the typical Ubisoft PC delay into perspective. The two games in recent memory that weren't delayed for PC were WatchDogs and AC:U. We all know how that turned out...

Are you guys still ignoring the fact that cdpr actually said that they changed the lighting of the game after the reveal? Causing some areas to look worse, according to them. They were pretty honest about that.

Downgrade or no, this game has one of the most beautiful skyboxes I've ever seen. Look at those fucking clouds.

The PC screen looks better to me. The PS4 has more aggressive LOD.

Wasn't aware we needed a great PC hope. Platform is doing just fine. =)

:lol I mean in terms of something that totally bitchslaps the consoles, I also game on PC. I guess Star Citizen. At least they're sticking to their PC-first mentality. Or in that case it's PC-only.

Just wait for the announcement this fall that it's a) being pushed back until Q4 2016 and b) coming to the PS4/Xbone.

Yep, this comparison pretty much confirms what I said in the other thread. The PS4 version has reduced foliage in the background. If you look near the peak of the mountains, you can see the PC version has more trees. Other than that, I see no difference aside from this minor one. It's like a difference between high and very high. Subtle but noticeable when seeing side to side.

I'm very interested to see if they can maintain insane scope and insane IQ levels they are going for as development progresses.

Not just reduced, but the LOD scaling is more aggressive on PS4 than PC, understandably. Distant PC trees are higher quality and receive more complex shadows.

That should go without saying. The PC version is running on a Titan X (and you will need 2 for it to be barely playable at 5K).

I justed watched the 35 min Gameplay again and it just looks better, more detailed, more effect, better finer foliage and more going on.

Are you referring to that comparison or the game in general? 'Cause I don't see the trees being higher quality in that shot, though. Then again, the shot of the PS4 version has some fog covering the foliage, so it could just be me. But overall, pop in should definitely be reduced in the PC version.

Yeah, obviously the PC version will have better LOD. :P It's just that I haven't watched any videos of the game on Ultra because, you know, shitty compression on Youtube, so this was the first time I saw the game running on Ultra.

Looks to me like the PC shot does have a better LOD range. Looking at that tree next to the broken tower, there is a clear quality difference. Some of it is higher res, but not all.

beaten....

I do wish there was shadows from the distant trees, is the only thing keeping this shot from being perfect.

since Anaxymenes came here on GAF and exposed the downgrade for the first time and CDPR were in bullshit PR-mode. instead of just been honest with the PC userbase that made them what they are now (the gamers who supported Witcher series and GoG) they just they are just lying. one will think that smaller companies like CDPR should not act like EA or Ubi spericely in their PR but sadly they are the same.

Now that you mention it, it does look like some trees are higher res. I can't say for sure now since the shots aren't exactly like for like.

PS4 LOD looks a lot lower quality, but it could be YouTube compression muddying the colours.

Uh... that's not from Youtube. It's from the console screenshot thread FYI. Regardless, it does look pretty compressed, but the foliage does look better here. Still, not trying to downplay the PC version, but it's a minor difference to me.

It's weird to see CDPR go from being hailed as the saviour of PC gaming and one of the better devs out there in terms of honesty around here to downgrades and PR bullshit in the last week haha

Not saying this as a personal opinion or anything, just the mood towards them seems to have shifted a bit around GAF lately. I'm still excited for the game though but it' IS a bit worrying to see how similar PS4 and PC footage looks in comparisons, time will tell I guess

There won't be any magical fixes between now and launch for the PC. Best bet is to hope modders can partially restore it to what was initially shown.

Ahh, thought it was a YouTube snap. Well there you go. Makes sense though; culling draw distance and LOD scaling is an easy way to optimise performance in games with long draw distances, especially compared to PC where sky's the limit. The muddier looking distant trees to seems to be that it swaps in lower quality imagery closer, but thankfully still retains scene density.

Yeah check Maldo's comparison gifs earlier in the thread. For once we actually got something worth analyzing

Yes he really did a good job, but I wanted to see it for myself again. When the game is out someone should record the exact same 35min of Gameplay on Ultra with Nvidia Workshop on. Then everybody will see that they reduced a lot and that their PR is becoming disgusting.

Yup, I didn't notice the difference when paying close attention, I sure as hell ain't gonna notice it when playing, so sounds like a good trade off. Like you said, at least the trees weren't outright removed.

I don't get these last minute PR efforts on that front (taking down the pcgameshardware comparison video, etc.). If the day 1 patch is indeed going to bring some improvements to the PC version, then fine. If not, however, and this is all a PR ploy, then why bother at all? In that case, shit is going to hit the fan anyway and these PR shenanigans are only making it worse.

PS: I'm not bothered at all by the way the finished game is looking (in fact, I'm happy that my PC will be able to run it at 1440p). However, I question the rationale behind the way they've basically kept the PC version out of sight for the past few months.

I'm never looking at older footage again. It just depresses me and reminds me of what could have been.

What I'm going to do is genius. I'm just going to keep staring at screenshots of games with extremely ugly grass until, by comparison, my brain decides that The Witcher 3's current grass is just the sexiest digital grass ever created.

From now on, we only post terrible screenshots of old games until we are all cured.

I'll start. Look at this Duck Hunt screenshot right here. I don't see no HBAO+! I see rubbish. Compare this to TW3. I think TW3 grass looks better. What about you guys?

It's working. It's actually helping me cope. The therapy is real.

I think it'll be near impossible for anyone to bring the game to its 2013 look. but if the game is mods friendly like Skyrim (if CDPR relese a Creation Kit, b ut I don't have any hope in CDPR anymore) maybe then modders will fix the console-quality textures and foliage.

Did anyone actually look at the proof that Viveks86 posted that proved that the posted video was indeed an early build? There may not be much difference in the final but CDPR arent lying about the status of the build.
