Users and their Avatars

Eh. Maybe in 2005 but not these days. Feel free to judge 2005 me in my avatar though. Damn... 10 years. Didn't think about this pic much but that was a long time ago for me. I was a completely different person.

I don't feel like you can properly judge a person based on their avatar, but it does give a little insight about a person. Although I swear 9 times out of 10 an anime girl avatar means the poster is a guy

My mind only makes the poster male if they have a male avatar, unless I know otherwise. All that matters is whether or not you make a sexy post. nynt9 is in the lead

A lot of times I look at people's avatars and wonder "what the hell is that?"

I dunno, we should just have an optional thing under our avatars that says our genders so we don't have to guess.

This is not a very good idea. Peeps in here still make subconscious judgments based on gender that they wouldn't have made otherwise, just like on any other forum. Plus you gotta consider the non-binary folks, etc.

Actually, no, I do judge people if there avatar is lazy. i.e., no/poor cropping, no transparency when it would be easy/make sense to add, nonstandard size, general ugliness, etc.
The actual content of avatars doesn't ever offend me as long as the user clearly put work into it.

I gotta admit im guilty of this myself, and when i accidentally briefly uploaded a version of my avatar with no transparency i thought people would judge me for it looking bad O:

People should only judge my avatar for my poor drawing skills.

THANK YOU. I'm glad I'm not the only one. Ugly avatars piss me off. The worst is when they're blatantly scaled improperly, like they squished it horizontally more than vertically instead of scaling both horizontal and vertical equally.

I don't understand how people can look at an ugly avatar and say, "Yes, this is a perfectly acceptable way to represent myself on the internet."

Not really. It helps me recognize posters that I like, but not much else. I try to not make too much judgement on the character of a person, a lot of gaffers reveal details about their private lives on OT so it's not really that hard to get the gist of who someone is.

My avatar is iconic though, as is the person behind the keyboard.

Since I'm 31, I missed out on Anime becoming a large part of nerd culture. As a result, I tend to think less highly of people with Anime avatars, especially if the avatar is an overly sexualized one.

It is hard to not have assumptions about a person that picks one of those and thinks, "yes, this is perfect to represent me on an internet forum".

I always try my best to look past it, and am completely aware that I do it. I know I shouldn't and mostly internalize it.

Me too

Yeah, probably. Not consciously, but sure.

I had no avatar for the longest time. Then, when last year's thread for putting a Santa hat on your avatar showed up, I switched my av to a Santa hat, since I was putting the hat on nothing. Then someone shopped a hat on top of the hat.

Double Santa Hat.

I'm gonna change mine soon. I feel like switched to this one, then a hundred years passed and my brother and I discovered the new Avatar, an airbender named Aang. And although his airbending skills are great, he has a lot to learn before he's ready to save anyone. But I believe Aang can save the world.

I actually mostly judge on typing style, boys and girls tend to type a certain way or make certain types of comments, it's not 100% but most times I'm right, course some don't give off a vibe with their posts so those can be pretty hard.
Don't know if it's like this here, but I'm often mistaken for a girl because of my avatars.

But why does it matter? Would you treat the post/poster any different?

If it's optional, i guess any people opting to use it is because they would like to be adressed by their preferred pronouns, so at least there is the chance that people would be treating them better by virtue of adressing them by their chosen identity.

I mean, that's just a perspective to take in concideration as a pro for it, i personally also think it's a bad idea, even if neogaf is pretty progressive about gender issues.

I wouldn't treat posters differently based on their gender. I just don't want to offend someone by calling them the wrong one if I ever refer to them in the third-person. Especially if they're transgender, because I know it's particularly insulting to call a transgender person by the wrong pronoun.
