At $60 definitely not. The campaign appears pretty short (but seems really cool) and local is restricted to one on one balloon popping for high scores.

It would probably be more worth it if you could find it for $30.

I'm halfway through the story and i would say yes, but only if you can get it for around the same price i paid which was £25.
It's a fun single player so far but it's clear that 80% of the game is based on online interaction.
The local multiplayer is restricted to 1vs1, and it seems almost the entire game is locked behind having a good internet connection,
I haven't been able to test any online matches or buy gear as the server isn't up yet in the uk.( shops kick me out and say come back when i'm online which is weird but i guess it's to stop people levelling up and buying gear too early)
Whilst the story is fun, with some fantastic bosses, it seems you can't buy and use gear in it (at least not yet) due to having to wear a hero suit.
So i'd say get it but only for a similar price to what i paid or even less if possible, especially if the single player is all your going to play, the game really needs a good internet by the looks of it.

This doesn't sound good considering here in Mexico the damn game is gonna be 80$ because videogame prizes increased... And I'm short of money this week. Guess will have to rely on reviews to see if I get it on day one or wait a few weeks. But I must have this game. The demo was crazy good and addictive!

Are you kidding?

Put that on a choke point and nothing can pass.

It is a run away or refill ink tool. If someone has a bubble, throw that down and it will block him out until the shield is down for you to attack. I see lots of applications for it. You gotta be creative man.

Lots of wallpapers

Based on impressions, I'm thinking the reviews will be straight 8s/high 8s, a few 9s, and a 5 from Polygon.

I'd imagine despite the core game being so awesome its still going to get knocked for having only 5 maps and 2 game modes at launch despite it being so multiplayer focused, even if more content is coming out for free over the next few months. Because of that I expect quite a few 7's

Jim is making it so hard.

We are soon there. 4 more days.

Can't wait to play Splatoon?

Locations for where the demo units are

Best Buy - http://www.nintendo.com/images/page/whats-new/article-assets/splatoon_bestbuy_locations.pdf

GameStop - http://www.nintendo.com/images/page/whats-new/article-assets/splatoon_gamestop_locations.pdf

Is the demo just the test-fire tutorial or an actual level from the single-player?

Edit: turns out it is the tutorial + the first three levels of single player. Time to make a trip to the local best buy to sastify my Splatoon squitch!

As this is the most recent Splatoon thread, I'll share my thoughts;
I was already pretty hyped for this and now that I've played the global testfires the amount of hype is gigantic, but along with this exciting feeling comes also a truly sad one, I mean, c'mon, why can't we have online splitscreen in this game like in MK8 and Smash. It could have been the perfect game, Nintendo. I'm hugely disappointed. I know that if the game had it there would be some problems, but generally speaking I think most of the "impossibilities" could be worked around. I'd even start a thread just to discuss this possibility and see if someone else agrees (I'm really hit by this and still blindly hope for Nintendo to patch it) but I'm a jr.

You want 30 fps?
Cause that's how you get 30 fps.

it's a great game, don't let my impressions put you off.
I'm now almost finished with story mode and it's been great even if the levels could do with more variation( taking place on lots of separate hovering boxes is great but i wish they had more larger structures like mario galaxy and a few less square cubes)
If you thought the demo was 'crazy good' then i guess you've played online which my copy doesn't allow yet because there is no server up in the uk. I say go for it if you liked the online demo as i can only comment on single player which has been very good.
but $80 is crazy, do they not go down in price later on?

I really want this too. Me and my girlfriend play MK8 for hours online splitscreen. If this had it I'm sure we would do the same for it. She loves to get competitive, so it would be perfect. And I imagine the 1 v 1 mode is gonna be very throwaway. But oh well. I'm sure there's reasons. Nintendo usually always makes it a point to include that option unless they just can't for whatever reason.

It's going to be nice to finally put a new disc in my Wii U. I just realised that Smash 4 has been in there since November, except for a brief period when the Mario Kart 8 DLC came out. Crazy thing is I'm not even bored of Smash, but Splatoon will make a nice change.

you say this as if 30 fps is bad or something

It is.

I don't see the having no split-screen thing as a problem. It would be so cramped and would detract from the game.

Every recent shooter I've played together with my group of friends didn't have the online split-screen option either. We would just take our systems and monitors to play online together. It really wasn't a big deal.

We did this so many times when we were playing The Last of Us online. I can see how it would be convenient for some, but the drawbacks would be too huge.

for this game? yes it would be.

To the extent that it would be unplayable? I don't think so. Isn't there any shooter (a CoD or something) that plays at 30fps in splitscreen, or all of the ones with splitscreen run at 60fps?. In MK8 when you play 3-4 player local, the decrease in fps is very noticeable, but it is still playable even in 200cc.

It would be for this game. The Battle Dojo is probably gonna get a bit annoying for that reason.

But it still takes away from the gameplay. I try not to play 3-4 players in Mario Kart 8 for that reason unless there's no other choice. Nintendo prioritizes framerate above all else when it comes to online, hence why you can't play with more than 2 players online in Mario Kart 8.

Even with a split-screen online-multiplayer solution, you'd need to sort out a workaround for the map, for both players. And that would be incredibly difficult

I honestly believe the game is going to garner a few 10s.
I wish. The fact that Splatoon's multiplayer alone is missing stuff at launch (that will be added later for free) will probably screw itself out of some points. Splatoon will probably get mostly 7's & 8's with the occasional 9. It'll have a solid single player & gameplay overall, but the multiplayer at launch will be a bit lacking to most critics & players alike.

This is the easiest of the problems, they could throw it in a submenu in the d-pad or something like this. Some will say it is way more convenient to have a always-on map in your hand but honestly I didn't catch me looking at the map many times in the demo given the amount of time for my eyes to focus on the other screen.

I see the main point is that the splitscreen would be a huge drawback, but I can't see it that way, unless it came to be pretty messed under-30 fps gameplay. From the customer point of view, if you don't like it, you can always skip playing it. But I see poeple in general doesn't care about it because they could play with multiple systems anyway, so probably this affected me a lot just because I live in a country abandoned by Nintendo where not many people have (I'm the only owner I personally know) Wii Us laying on their houses and games are at least 3 times their original prices.

I still predict a 9 or 10 from Edge.

Compared to the usual 60 fps during regular play it looks really off for the first few minutes. You get used to it after awhile but I personally wouldn't want to play it that way for a longer period of time. They could implement it later though, wouldn't bother me and some people seem to really want it in.

I think the issue then would become getting matched up with someone who would be at a technical disadvantage

This is a budget game in terms of content, with the heart of an elite-tier Nintendo game, that is getting a bunch of content patched in over time to make it not quite so budget tier.

Splatoon exists in a weird place that makes it hard to sum up with a handy little numerical score.

That's not the impression I've gotten from the previews people have posted after extensive gameplay.

That's the impression I've gotten from armchair previewers.

I don't think so.

We know too much about its missing features.

Even that aside, I think 80% will be its average score at best.

Missing features are an issue if the game is compromised at launch. About the only thing actually *missing* from the game is the sorted party team matchmaking.

The very simple fact that I can still listen to a podcast be it GB, BeastCast, IGN NVC or what have you, and see the guys reviewing it making comments about how "surprised" they were by the single-player, of all things, and it not being a bot showdown, makes me think people have strange expectations.

I'm thinking it'll be sitting real pretty with an 87% average. I see it getting tons of good reviews based on how fresh and fun it is, and being pegged for the lack of friend options and stuff but won't be as harsh because we know they're coming. Lots of 9's and 8'a with a few 7 here and there.
