Oh well, if you are judjing it by the way that IGN guy plays it's understandable: he basically seems to play like he wished to be anywhere else in tge world... and it's his second time playing the game.

Just because it's different doesn't mean it's lame.

I was playing online while they did the stream, so either only 9 people were online or they had bad luck.

... a plus one media create game sale for japan splatoon here. my copy arrives tomorrow with the three pack amiibo set.
i've been using the splatoon promotional catalogue nintendo makes for most of its games in japan for my japanese english elementary after school classes... i ask the students to translate the text to explain what the game is about to me. i've made a few converts along the way haha.
they are advertising the game heavily on japanese tv as well. i've seen more splatoon ads than any other wii u title ever.

I have no interest in the 1 vs. 1 mode of this game. I feel like they forced the game way too much to have a local multiplayer, just to make happy a section of the consumers.

I got an early copy today and am streaming the single player. Just defeated the second boss.

I ordered the game and amiibo. Waiting for them to contact me.

I managed to find a copy in store today and couldn't help myself, even with an amiibo bundle on preorder. The second copy will make a fine gift for one of my friend's birthday.
The public servers are of course down, so I only got to play hero mode and squid jump, but it kinda already disgust me after the last testfire ahah. Bummed out that all the shops are closed without online too.

It took me something like six hours to get to the end, with a 1/2 hour dinner break. It's not super short, but it could be longer. Reminded me a lot of Portal 1. I could see them creating something more significant for the next game.
Gameplay :
There are five worlds, with the first one being hardly anything more than an extension of the tutorial.
The difficulty curve is smooth. Didn't have trouble until world 4, but I still wouldn't call it hard. The bosses are good. I really like the fact that the game paces itself when it comes to gameplay elements. It can introduce something like the ink sponges, then not reutilize them until several levels later.
The scrolls are not really hard to find.
It's not possible to level up the hero gear attributes (fire rate, ink tank, three sub weapons) to the max before the last boss without grinding, so I don't know if you get anything for that.
You earn the hero outfit for finishing the campaign. I also got the octoling outfit, but that might be because I gathered all the scrolls.

The last boss fight was pretty hype for what it was, but there's hardly any meat to the story. It's disappointing, because the scrolls paint a pretty interesting lore. Could have made a nice plot with the octarians, forced to live underground in a decaying world, having to steal energy from the inkling society in order to survive. As it is, you're just running after an angry DJ who graduated from the school of Robotnik mech design.
Disappointed that the octolings didn't have any interesting part in the story. Having a rivalry with a single octoling could have been neat, but their presence was obviously just an afterthought.

This, plus, if this game were to ever get "competitive" seeing the main goal, the territory, should be focused on and shown. Otherwise people think its just another shootbang, which some streamers still think it is.
EDIT: Any chance you could get rid of the white background? I tried using the direct link, but GAF keeps telling me that the file size is too big.
I'm not really sure why people with the game early seem so disappointed in the lack of shop access. The shop gear is only usable in online battles anyway, and you can't buy any clothing until level 4, which means you wouldn't be able to gain the requisite experience to actually purchase anything until after the servers open, anyway. I guess people are just that eager to get called a loser by Moe?

But more seriously : it'd be nice to have a quick preview of the kind of clothes available, their prices (okay that one might be useless without knowing the average gain of a match).
It's not so much disappointment, more like eagerness. Can't wait to see that whole party started.

So I took a look at the leaked Sunken Sea Scrolls, and holy crap,
the world of Splatoon is kinda hilariously dark.
Here's one with a smaller size and no white outline like the one you are currently using has.

Oh hell no. I am not watching that guy.
He's not good. He focuses on killing and isn't even good at doing that.
It's why Splatoon needs Spectator modes later on so you could watch high ranked players/teams after the August update. Watching players better than myself is one of the reasons I watch Twitch
I had a question about this as well, is it only based on the Ranked Mode?
How hard is it to change ranks?
I doubt I have seen even a B- so far.

OT is going up a bit around noon GMT.
It is challenging because if you lose you drop points - you get 15pts for winning and then drop 10pts for losing. The reason no one is above a B- is because Ranked matches didn't come easily. I'd say I've only played, maybe, 10-15 Ranked games, and that may be generous.
Ranking is only for Ranked battles. Regular battles don't affect the rank. It's hard for the reviewers to get into Ranked Battles. Assuming that's what you're asking, my bad if you're not.

Losing is tough tho. 10 pts? Damn. Going to be challenging as hell to reach A
