Is there a reason why people are predicting such low review scores? My impression has been reactions to the game have been nearly universally positive.

It doesn't seem like the press is as hyped. It doesn't have voice chat. The single player campaign is only 6 hours. It doesn't have local co-op online. It doesn't allow you to use a class controller online. It has a limited map selection. Not all content is there a launch. Nintendo is artificially locking ranked games. Should be free-to-play (to some). Shoudn't be $60 (to others).

Its all true. The critiques are valid, and to those who make these kinds of content based reviews, it will lower the score.

Its why sequels tend to score better. The gameplay is proven, so now they can deliver the content. But really it was the original that deserves the praise for being so innovative.

In the end I don't think reviews will impact the sales very much either way. This is easily a word-of-mouth game. And the experience itself (aka the game) is dope.

yah. let's not kid ourselves. all those criticisms were valid. If splatoon wasn't any fun to play, i'd be saying the same things (well, maybe not f2p). But i'm the kind of gamer who thinks design, gameplay and fun trump all other things. I've liked what I've seen so far in the Testfire. I think, theorycrafting wise, this game has enormous potential. It is a revolution in terms of TPS design. and it's a hellova lot of fun to play. But I'm not every reviewer.

While some what you said is true, the bold is not "true" anymore than saying that Metroid Prime should have been playable with a "classic controller" or "Halo control scheme". A game is made to be played with a controller in mind, unless that functionality is utterly broken you don't grade something based on your personal desire for some mythical non-existent product. You grade the product based on what it is designed to do and is present.

And the second bold is not a thing that even exists in games in general today. The Witcher just launched with an expansion's worth of content announced long before release.

I believe reviews will value how original and fresh Splatoon is. They know the game will keep improving in the next weeks. I'm expecting great scores.

.52 gal is the secret best loadout. Can't wait til everyone's running around with it in the MLG tourneys.

That was going to be the thing I messed with for day 1-ish until I see more of the paint brush. I just hope I get something where I can have either Bubbler + Inkstrike or Sticky Bomb + Inkzooka.

Think there will be more weapons postlaunch???

I mean besides the paintbrush.

Like down the road DLC(free) or would that just make the game balancing a mess and they will keep it modest???

It leaves a big splotch of paint right under your feet. You could paint, almost to the point of OCD, the whole starting point with a team of those in like 10 seconds before pushing up. It takes 2 hits at most to kill, so at that point, it'd be down to positioning and the skill.

Paintbrush is definitely something I kinda wanna style on.

I think they mentioned more weapons besides the paintbrush (which I'm still surprised that it's not there Day 1, probably a balancing thing) in the Splatoon Direct.

I feel like in light of recent "unfinished" launches, someone's going to give it a notably low score to prove a point. Splatoon still seems to be a pretty polished game, unlike the aforementioned unfinished games, so overall I think it's scores will be good.

After watching this stream two things are apparent: ) the fact that almost no one seems to understand the point of Splatoon and yet people are still deriving pleasure from winning, shows just how well designed this game is; and 2) The point to which people are completely missing the point of this game is off the charts, and I'm not saying I agree with their decision to take out voice chat, but I now kind of understand.

While I marinate the crow, we should probably take one last look at the party guests before I start grilling the main course. Most of which are from the "Do we expect Splatoon to be the next major Nintendo I.P.?" thread (with one exception).

You do understand the difference between it being the next major Nintendo I.P and it being a good game, right?

People aren't saying it'll be shit. They're questioning if it will have the longevity and audience recognition of other major Nintendo I.P. Will this be next in line in a list of games, the last of which would be Pikmin? That's the question and crow will only be eaten if a sequel is announced in the coming years for new Nintendo hardware.

I just thought it was funny for Neoxon to go all-in then talk about mowing lawns for the cash money for splatoon

sorry duder

after finishing the game and thinking about it i'd have to agree with this, it's a little similar to how pikmin was introduced.
An amazing concept with great ideas but it seems lacking in content, I've no doubt in my mind that it has the potential to be a major new i.p, hopefully nintendo continues to support it enough post launch that it turns into what it deserves to be.
Single player alone has some great ideas and designs but was a little rough around the edges at times.
I can see reviewers being harsh on the title at launch without all the content available but i'm sure they will see the potential like i did.

I also use an Elgato for streaming. Simple and gets the job done.

Pretty excited to stream some Splatoon!

How much delay do you get on your PC? I´m trying to do something like this to use my laptop as a second TV for when the main TV is occupied: connect the WiiU to a capture card and use the preview in the PC to play. However I´m getting 2 seconds of lag which makes it impossible to play. The card I´m using uses USB2.0, so there may be space for improvement with a card that uses USB3.0.

I effing hate content scoring. It leads to bloat, grind, sequelitis and the dearth of creativity that has blighted the industry for the greater part of the last two decades. These new ips are set to score lower so there's wiggle room for the inevitable sequels to score higher. It's why I think Eurogamer's approach of recommending something if it does something new and interesting is such a godsend (even though they're still not above content scoring either).

You are twelve and what is this.

Nineteen and three quarters and ten fingers eh. Super almost twenty.

Anyway, let other people have other opinions. They probably know they could be wrong.

I bought GTAV because of its vast content and i did not stop to ask myself "will this game actually be any fun to play"

it was not really that fun to play. I spent most of my time driving from point a to point b and occasionally shooting a lot of people but not really having much fun doing it. cutscenes and characters were okay i guess. I dunno.

i really should've thought about that more before I bought it. sigh.

I dont see why this post is in the Splatoon thread, but maybe im dumb

Well then they shouldn't be so dismissive and as it was a certainty.

Because? You can't hold an opinion around here anymore?
I don't know what's the deal with that list. There's many posts in there that are completely and utterly reasonable.

'I don't expect it to do that well.'

YEAH BOYS LETS NAME AND SHAME THE DISSENTER YEE-HAW

What's the consensus on Digital vs Physical here?

Some people are buying physical because they are afraid to lose their games whenever the eShop gets taken down.
Also, the digital games aren't tied to the account on the Wii U, but on the actual hardware.

One thing to keep in mind is that Nintendo's account system will change this fall, and I believe it's safe to say there will be improvements (most likely game tied to the account, finally).

Also, the digital version has slightly faster load times, but it doesn't matter in a multiplayer game where you have to wait for everyone to finish the loadings anyway before playing.

Choosing physical also allows for trade-in later, or sharing the game with your friends.

I'm still on the fence really.

One important thing to keep in mind is that the game size is only approximately 2Gb, which is very small.

"Parcel Status Great news, we have your parcel and it's on its way to you

Your estimated delivery date is Thursday 28 May 2015"

It was today earlier! Ugh, what a downer. :(

I get around the same delay, sadly.

Uh... OK... You're kind of coming off like a fanboy here.

"I hope it's successful but I doubt it will."
"I'M GOING TO REMEMBER THIS. PREPARE TO EAT CROW."

Oh my goodness this weapon set looks like it's absolutely dedicated for hunting and killing.

- Blaster shoots real slow, but it has big splash and can OHKO. It seems to be the equivalent of a grenade launcher or a rocket launcher.

- Potion Bomb (?) doesn't damage nor release ink, but it basically hits everyone in an area with a faerie fire effect that reveals them while in squid form AND slows them down. Good for tossing into enemy ink to find would-be ambushers.

- Killer Wail is artillery that can hit through walls, but does not spread ink.

Yep, I'm running with this. Confirm it gets access to a Bubbler and Inkzooka and I am never using anything else. :lol
I don't think any weapon set can have both (since both are specials) but I did watch someone streaming earlier with a Blaster that has a Bubbler. He didn't seem to do very well with the Blaster though; it hits hard, but the projectile actually doesn't go that far and apparently you need to aim it really well to get the OHKO.

I don't know if the streamer was using gyro controls or not though.
