I can just imagine some east end gangsters being chuffed with their big score, only to open those van doors and see it filled with amiibos and splatoon boxes

For some reason this was the image that immediately popped into my head when I read the news, so I had to make a gif. Glad you enjoyed it :)

Clearly Nintendo is the real victim here.

Don't be silly now. Nintendo isn't the victim like GAME is and the gamers are, but that doesn't mean they are the first to blame.

To be fair, all the criticisms are legit. Like, if Amiibo weren't limited there'd be much less of a black market and as a result there'd be less incentive to knock off an entire lorry of the things.

And if women didn't dress in ways that men find sexy, they wouldn't have to worry about being harassed. Just make things less desirable and you don't have any problems, right? You can't blame people for acting shitty if given the chance, right?

Blame can clearly go to scalpers first and the people who have justified the scalping by paying the exorbitantly high prices (which has created the grey market to be as lucrative as it is for practically any limited Nintendo item now) instead of waiting and then you can blame Nintendo for not finding some solution for their limited ability to deliver goods through retail outlets that already don't care to stock much Nintendo merchandise nor cares to prepare itself for the white hot demand Nintendo items have (especially on the easily exploitable online sector).

Nintendo actually has done a fair job at giving amiibo value without being required for the main game, while also allowing for the potential future value of a single figure of a franchise. It's a tough enough balancing act as it is, but you throw in the clusterfuck that is retail into the mix, and suddenly it's become a losing proposition as far as pleasing a portion of their userbase. Even if they are able to distribute cards that do the same thing, people aren't going to be as willing to pay the same price for a figure, to get the same content without the figure.

Nintendo has tapped a value for their figures that is right in the overlap of game fanaticism, with collecting fanaticism, that can appeal to both casual players of all ages to hardcore players of all ages, and all of those elements create a perfect storm that makes demand high but unpredictable. If they attempted to "meet demand" for say, Marth and Fire Emblem figures, the market could bottom out and suddenly Nintendo and tons of retail partners (as well as the scalpers buying these things in droves with hopes of reselling them) get stuck with a ton of figures. Some of the rarest figures don't even have other games they are compatible with at the moment like Villager or Wii Fit Trainer, which would at least add enough value to make more people buy them outside of the diehard fans for other purposes.

I can't believe people still order from GAME after all that company has been through. I'm guessing the Splatoon thing was exclusive?

Yeah because this is exactly the same thing.

With Amiibos and Nintendo by making them this rare yeah, they sell out and that is great but the demand is still there. It's so bad that people have to turn to scalpers to get their fix instead of Nintendo upping the distribution and getting even more profit. Nintendo are in a way losing money to scalpers.

You either have to stay up to 3am hoping a site refreshes and updates with the new wave for preorder or you pay the scalpers price or you don't get one. Or you can get one of the million "common" amiibo like Mario which Nintendo just keep pumping out even even though there isn't a demand for them.

I'll repeat my message from the OT, written earlier today:

I just got off the phone with GAME (to make sure I'd be getting the regular game + two Inklings after I sent two conflicting emails yesterday due to being so bummed out) and here is a summary of most important parts:

- The stolen lorry contained mostly (or even only?) the squid bundles it seems.
- Nintendo did not make ANY backups for that bundle, meaning it could not be replaced.
- The regular game + inklings will now arrive on Saturday (with first class post) because they have to wait till Friday to collect people's preferences for their orders and to await new stock for the regular game + Inklings.

The guy I spoke to seemed genuinely bummed out by it all himself and while this does not really get me my squid amiibo, at least I now feel that the fault - apart from those damn thieves - lies completely with Nintendo for (A) not making any backups of the bundle and (B) not selling the squid amiibo separately (like in Japan) in the first place (where I've ordered mine in the mean time btw).

There might be a chance that more bundles will arrive later, but waiting for those and not getting the regular game in the mean time, to me, is a bit silly if we don't know how long that will take.

Good luck my fellow UK Inklings - may we have patience till Saturday and good fortune with getting hold of the squid amiibo elsewhere!

What a jerk move. I hope everyone gets a squid somehow. Apologies to AmiiboGAF for not making our usual poster, but all the heist film posters are a bunch of people standing around.

To make matters worse, I just got the following "happy" message from GAME, that just about rubs it in our face at this point:

"We just wanted to write with some good news. The price for Splatoon with Inkling Squid amiibo, Inkling Boy amiibo and Inkling Girl amiibo has decreased to £42.99. Our Pre-order Price Promise means you pay the lower price, and not the original price so there's no need to worry. Thought you should know.

Thanks again for pre-ordering with us.

Keep gaming,

The Team
GAME.co.uk"

Ok, GAME, what use is this reduced price if the squid bundle IS NOT BEING DELIVERED in the first place!?

Now the reduced price we're getting for the regular version + Inklings to compensate for the trouble has actually become a slap in the face! Why not give us a bigger discount on that replacement version, you know, to help soften the blow for our missing squid and additional day of waiting?

I'm really fed up with this shit!

Think that's bad? I just got an email saying they were charging me £39.99 for the £ 22.99 goodwill standard copy of the game being shipped instead of squid version.

Fuckin muppets.

Ok, that is actually far worse indeed! The price of the regular game does seem to vary quite a bit as well, doesn't it? I think that price is at the very top though, so maybe contact them to get a compensation reduction of sorts?

What a cluster f*ck this has been - I'm really tempted to never deal with GAME again after this mess.

(And to think this was actually my first order with them ever; talk about lousy first impressions!)

Edit: to be clear, I was offered the receive the regular version + Inklings for 42.99, so while it's a shame I can't have the squid as well for that price, at least I'm still saving some money on the two Inkling amiibo's I guess.

Edit 2: It seems GAME is now charging 32.99 for the regular version so make sure you're not charged any penny more than that!

I sent an email to GAME on the day of the 'truck wot got stolen, honest guvnor' asking to cancel the substitute copy of the game, but keep the Girl and Boy Amiibo in the order. Fast forward to Thursday morning, no response, order information untouched on my account page. I decided to call them and after a 15 minute wait managed to speak with a human. I was told that "...if we remove the game, you'd have to re-order the Amiibo as we can't amend orders in our system. Unfortunately this would mean we have to put you on a waiting list", essentially setting me to the back of the order queue, and to add insult to injury Girl Amiibo was out of stock anyway.

Instructed the whole order to be cancelled, ordered the Amiibo elsewhere. I still think there's something odd about this truck theft, it just doesn't sit right with me. That combined with the fact that I don't trust a word GAME say (non-amendable orders? yeah, whatever) and I think I'm done with them as a viable source for any future game purchases.

They can bollocks! £22.99 or bust!

Might cancel my MGS V special edition too just in case it gets Fulton'd by Konami on the way to the warehouse.

Yeah, I've had my suspicions as well since the whole dreaded lorry email. I followed a similar path to yours by calling but decided to keep my order because of the (now gradually becoming irrelevant) discount and guaranteed inkling amiibo's.

I hope to God your more recent information doesn't imply that people like me won't get the girl now even if we chose to make use of their squid bundle replacement deal for 42.99.

Or did you imply that you wouldn't be getting her if you only wanted the amiibo's? That's also quite a bummer of course, especially because they should have given you both for a discounted price instead! Where did you get them now by the way? In any case, best of luck!

Yes, that's what I meant - it seems that had I accepted the substitute standard copy (like you have) then my order would be secure for all three items. By attempting to remove the game I was told the full order would have to be cancelled and a new order for the two Amiibo would be necessary.

My LE arrived yesterday, and the Amiibo are on their way (all from ShopDeux). The only reason I was trying to keep them with GAME was the lower price when I first preordered them.

Tinfoil hat time!

Nintendo ninja's stole the lorry to increase demand for the secondary market....as they are secretly all the scalpers on ebay using multiple accounts

I'm really not serious

I see. Well, fingers crossed for me and a "have fun" for you then. Incredible that you managed to get the bundle version that soon! Wish I had chosen that option in hindsight, since getting the game first is more important then waiting for the amiibo's.

Why would Nintendo even want to hold back launch day / limited edition stock? It's not something that's typically done give the idea is to sell as much as possible.

They might not want to do so indeed, but it sure would have been decent of them for circumstances like stolen trucks (possibly resulting from short supplies in the first place), or simply for replacements for faulty ones.

It's one thing to try and ship every item, but it's another to possibly never make more of them when a large quantity is lost like this and thus forcing customers who pre-ordered to jump through many hoops to try and get their games and amiibo's.

A truck containing my assassin's creed III limited edition was stolen once. Did get a replacement copy, but in hindsight it would have been better to have gotten my money back, considering the quality of that game :(

...and my standard edition has now been despatched plus my card charged £39.99 for a substitution they promised would be £22.99.

It even says £22.99 on the order summary.

Wazzocks.

Same here. Already emailed customer support. I'm not even pissed about it being the standard edition. Just wanted the fucking Amiibo.

At least I've got the Inkling Girl Amiibo on it's way...

Yeah, it's been quite a mess for many of us, dealing with GAME in this case. And that's putting it lightly.

I just got an email stating that my order (which they don't even specify anymore, meaning I have no real guarantee I'm actually getting the game + 2 inklings as promised) has been dispatched. They are shipping it to me with first class post, which I thought would get it here tomorrow, but now I see that my email mentions 1 or 2 days for shipping. Things could very well be delayed till Monday in other words...sigh...

I'm not a very impatient person normally, but for some reason the delay for this game in particular is frustrating me to no end. I'd hate to lose this entire weekend of playtime because of that damn lorry theft and despite me pre-ordering the damn game so far in advance! (Hopefully I won't cave in and buy the digital version as well out of sheer madness....)

Edit: oh, and for those above that now paid far too much for the standard edition: don't give up in getting a partial refund at least. They're only charging 32.99 for the game so I'd say that that amount minus a 10 pound reduction as compensation would be the only fair solution here.

Yep. Brother had this on order at Game, got the bad news on Wednesday and got me to order him a LE Squid+Game bundle from Shopto the same day.

I'll just stick to my mantra of only ordering any exclusive stuff from Game, and only if I really want it. They've messed up too many times before for me.

Say I buy the regular version at a GAME store and start playing that, do you guys think I can simply return (to the store) the delayed second copy of the regular version I'll be getting in the post tomorrow or on Monday?

I'll just pretend that the shipped copy is the one I bought in store in other words and return it to that store. I should be covered by GAME's 28 day return policy on sealed items, right?

Is there any reason to think that that won't work, perhaps because they scan the individual copy or something? Or because the shipped copy lacks the seal?

I'll need a quick answer since my gf is currently in town and can pick one up for me. Cheers Gaf!

F*ck it, I'll just risk it. I'm not doing anything illegal as long as I'll bring one sealed copy back to the store even if it's technically not the exact same one, right?

(Now I'll have to keep my fingers crossed that the copy I'll be getting in the mail is indeed the regular version - not the bundle for some weird reason - and that it has its seal intact...)

Edit: apologies for the double post.

I'm pretty sure they do actually let you do this. A few years back I preordered a game from their website and it didn't turn up on release day, I went to my local GAME and explained the situation and they sold me another copy, and told me I could come back and get a full refund with the sealed game that was still in the delivery process. I did, and it worked fine. Took a few days for the refund to come through.
