Austin Walker joins Giant Bomb

Holy crap this is fantastic..... New avatar incoming?

Interesting that he'll be at GBeast. I'm quite excited about it. He seems like a talented writer with a real depth of knowledge when it comes to criticism. That's rare in the video games world unfortunately. Eager to see what comes of it.

I kinda want this other guy on the podcast (Jeff Bakula?) more. He fits their tone a lot better

Haven't listened to the new one yet but I thought he was awesome on the last one. Hopefully he drops in often as I was actually kind of bummed that he wasn't going to be a reg.

Look forward to seeing what he does, especially how he adapts to a more visible persona.

Yeah, I'm curious how he'll develop on-camera, considering his career background is more like Patrick's, focused on written work. I never really went to GB for the writing, and while I'm not one of those guys who would instantly thumbs-down a Patrick quick look on YouTube, the dude was simply not that entertaining in video content. I liked when he was getting a little more experimental with his video things (see the A Story About My Uncle video), but he bailed pretty shortly after that so it never really got a chance to grow from that.

Regardless of whatever he's like on-camera, it'll be pretty hard not to enjoy him coupled with Vinny. Dude's like the cheese of Giant Bomb: there isn't much he doesn't make better.

man he kind of looks like wesley willis in pixel form, doesn't he

I've had no prior exposure to this man, but he seems to be a pretty good writer and certainly more along the Patrick side of the ideological spectrum. Hopefully he fits in well. Haven't listened to the podcast yet.

I know his name and have seen tweets from him here and there, but I'm not familiar with his work. The GB dudes have great taste, though, so I welcome him to the team!

some people can't let it go

This criticism of what I said makes no sense. Is your implication that I disliked Patrick for writing on social justice issues in video games like so many did? No, that would not make much sense when my post was about being glad that someone who is clearly much more well-suited to writing about social issues in games has joined the site.

Nope, my point was people feel the need to go out of their way to shit on Patrick instead of just celebrating what Austin will bring to the site.

Criticism is not "shitting" on him. I have always commended Patrick's attempts and have consistently found his work to be shallow and poorly-written. From what I have read of Austin's work, he clearly does not have those things in common with Patrick. I would suggest you never pick up a journal of literary criticism if you found what I have said to be "shitting" on Klepek, you wouldn't be able to handle it.

Hopefully Austin is more open to your efforts in assisting him in improving his writing then Patrick was.
