Microsoft/Phil Spencer to appear at PC Gamer/AMD's PC gaming show at E3

Wouldn't that be a bad thing though? Like obviously it's good that it would be coming to PC but then that's less of a reason for people to get an X1.

What people? What people are going to choose a Halo 5 PC vs a Halo 5 Xbone version?

The market size of PC gamers who own a PC powerful enough to play Halo 5 on it AND own an Xbone AND would opt for the PC version over the Xbone version is a pretty small market.

All they would be doing is selling more copies of their game. The people they would lose is tiny compared to that.

What kind of dumb logic is this?

There is a PC conference this year.... it makes sense to talk about PC stuff at the PC conference if they're Xbox conference is already packed with content.

Yeah, to be fair, Phil's time will be taken up talking about formerly multiplatform titles that Microsoft have paid to keep out of the hands of PC Gamers.

Look, Microsoft have had 15 years to talk about PC Games at E3, to show off their support for the platform, support they keep claiming to be eager to deliver. Yet, they still choose not to. Microsoft wouldn't have said a damn thing about PC Gaming at E3 this year, had it not been for the efforts of others to organise a conference that they can swoop into, and claim that streaming Xbone games to PC is some great revolutionary thing. I'm sure it's nice enough for Xbone owners. But it's meaningless for PC Gamers.

DX12, while providing a significant boost in performance, does not provide a 100% boost. And the DDOS part is a total non-sequitor. I don't even know why you even brought that up...

I wouldn't be too quick on that sentiment.

I bet you performance improvements above 100% are entirely possible if you aren't desinging with DX11 limitations in mind.

Basically, design a game around DX12 - tons of draw calls, lots of CPU utilization, lots of compute, lots of transparency handling, etc, and compare performance on DX11 (ignoring the few things you plain old can't do in DX11). You'll likely see much more than 100% performance difference.

It's only when designing a game for DX11 and running it in DX12 that you see much lower results - you're basically just lowering the CPU overhead and improving multi-threaded performance at that point. Not to dismiss such optimizations, just that coule mean tons of things for performance and graphics and CPU based task iprovements.

But it's when we start to see DX12 designed games from the ground up, that you'll start to see huge benefits.

Because Phil is also part of the FBI groups tasked with hunting down these Cyber criminals!!!

Part of? Phil leads that taskforce, in fact he might be like third in command of the FBI and he does this all because he wants to make gaming better for everyone.

Praise be unto Phil.

I believe they'll have to get the XB1 version out of alpha first.

Renewed commitments take time mate.

I just hope Phil Spencer whips out his dongle when he goes on stage, it's like the one of the top things I want to see at e3.

Are we pretending that DX12 offering significant performance boosts is because they're just great guys who really want to see PC gamers getting the most out of their machines, and not because AMD and DICE were already getting there with low level non-Microsoft APIs, and the last thing in the world MS wants is better performance on an OS that isn't sold by MS?

You mean the company that owns the primary OS , and graphics API for the entire PC gaming industry can't be bothered to talk about PC on their turf?

And that is suppose to inspire confidence? And then there is the hypocrisy of trying to say the entire MS gamingn divison (including PC) is now XBOX, but they can't be bothered to talk about it side by side with Xbox.

MS is a multi-platform developer just like EA, Ubisoft,etc...

Ori and the Blind Forest, PC/Xbox One
Project Spark, PC/Xbox One
State of Decay, PC/Xbox One
Fable Legends, PC/Xbox One
3rd party games shown like Call of Duty AW,Witcher 3,Evolve, etc,etc,etc....

Refresh my memony on this, but wasn't DX12 a response to AMD's Mantle API?

DX is the most popular gaming API on PC, who cares if it was driven by competition? In the end it is still a great thing for all PC gamers.

AMD helped Microsoft with DX12.

The story behind the start of DX12 would be great, I'm not sure if we will ever get it.

Spencer still has the most punchable face in gaming.

I bet you have a lovely face.

Yes. Exactly.

You don't get to portray MS as "good guys really helping out PC gamers" because DX12 when the only reason DX12 exists is because there was about to be serious competition that would stop DX being a popular gaming API.

Hoping to build a PC this month, so I'll be very interested in seeing what they have to say.

If former exclusives are going multiplatform, I might sell the Bone.

Ok, I think I got all the jokes out of the way, now let's get serious. I expect literally nothing of value out of Microsoft's presentation. I hope I'm dead wrong, I really do, but DX12 and an Xbox app isn't going to cut it. I want either day and date PC releases of all Microsoft Studios games or a wide array of first-party PC releases that take advantage of the platform's strengths. That's true commitment to PC gaming, Microsoft. Give me games like Age of Empires, Rise of Nations, Crimson Skies and Freelancer and you can keep your bro shooters if they are so important for your Xbox sales.

This is exactly what he is talking about - and Mantle was set to become a platform agnostic API that would essentially challenge Microsoft's DirectX dominance. AMD single handidly drove the industry to compete. OpenGL's successor is now taking directly from AMD's Mantle thanks to AMD's help with Khronos group - who were finally pushed by Mantle to get OpenGL up to date away from the old and messy state it is in, so in essence Mantle goes on as Vulkan

I dont understand why microsoft can't just use a simple scheme like "port most of our xbox one line-up to PC 1/ 1.5/ 2 years after releasing it on Xbox One."

Hell. Port their XBox 360 lineup to PC. Do that and I'll believe you care about the program.

Forza 3, Gears series (not just the first one), Halo series.

Release updated versions on the PC.

If Microsoft say that "Xbox is on PC now" without porting all of the Halo/Gears/Fable/Forza to PC then that statement is entirely made of hot air.

I'm sick of hearing that they have nothing substantial to announce but are committed to PC gaming in the future. I was sick of it a decade ago.

They are obviously far more interested in selling Xbox consoles than they are in providing a high quality service to PC games.

It's pretty amazing that Sony are less hostile towards PC gamers than Microsoft are.

Problem is the feeling.
Think about the reaction if Sony port their every PS4 exclusive to PC after 1-2 years.

Again, this is mostly a problem that only exists in communities like NeoGaf. NeoGaf is NOT representative of the larger console base out there.

Those people don't buy x version of a game because of ANYTHING other than marketing.

No one is going to tell them to buy the PC version instead, the vast majority don't even own a gaming PC. The only place core audiences for console and PC intermingle is in enthusiast driven places like NeoGaf.

There is only a problem when Microsoft releases Halo for PS4. THAT would likely mean lost sales of the Xbone. Halo 5 on PC would only mean a few lost Xbone sales, and millions of PC sales.

Hah, c'mon now, DirectX wasn't in much threat of not being the most popular API for a while.

We have no idea of the circumstances that started the development of DX12 into what it is.

All we know is that AMD is in full support of it and that's pretty odd behavior for a "competitor".

If you think they aren't supporting PC gaming without porting every exclusive to PC... well that's never going to happen.

I didn't know Sony has been releasing titles on Steam and a new development API for PC?

What a world we live in.

If Microsoft cares about PC gaming they will bring some of their bigger exclusives to PC. If they announce Halo MCC, Halo 5, or Gears since they own it now that would be something. Hell I'd take a Rise of the Tomb Raider announcement. That would have been a pretty easy to pull off.

Microsoft is looking to release a new title in a “beloved” strategy series, http://www.vg247.com/2015/01/09/age-of-empires-microsoft-working-on-beloved-strategy-game/

Age of Empires?

If they care about PC gaming, they should push for content specifically to take advantage of the platform rather than pre-existing titles. Microsoft used to do a decent job with their PC studios back in the 90s

Holy hell the console wars have even migrated to here but this time PC vs MS (which granted has been going on longer)

Why can't people accept that this is a new MS and it takes time to build up these things. The new CEO and Phil have said PC Gaming is a focus for them, this is not Mattrick and Balmer saying it anymore. Do we know if they are serious? Who knows, but why just immediately count them out?

Also Phil openly said they would discuss Windows 10 and PC Gaming at their conference to those saying they can't be bothered showing it at their own show, they planned to from the get go, but I bet due to this PC Gaming show they decided to sponsor it and move their PC Gaming talk over to this to target that audience who will be watching, it's not some giant conspiracy jesus.
